Heavenly Daisho of the Dragon + Chugo Seido + Touch of Death

L5R CCG Rules board, 12 July 2009 to 15 July 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

hey there

assuming i have a bowed samurai who has heavenly daisho of the dragon attached and chugo seido in play. my opponent has a shugenja with touch of death.

my opponent now announces touch of death and beginns to set targets for required targeting. my bowed samurai gets targeted.

i use chugo seido to redirect the action to himself. due to being targeted in the constrains block my samurai performed the action. after the action resloves i use the reaction on heavenly daisho of the dragon to unbow my samurai's unit.

E. ACTION RESOLUTION If all targets are met and costs are paid, apply the action’s effects in the order they are mentioned. Touch of Death: Destroy a target bowed Personality with equal or lower Chi than this Shugenja.

now my question is this: does it make any diffrence that my samurai isn't bowed when the effects are applied or will he still get killed?

thanks in advance

EDIT: See Ruling Below

Dan Jacobson (rules official), 15 July 2009

The Reaction of your Heavenly Daisho is not triggered by Chugo Seido, as no personality performs the action of Chugo Seido (the player does).

However, were you to use something that IS performed, the targets would have been interfered with at the targeting step.

Abilities and actions, Interferences with targeting: "From the point when an action is announced legally, to the point when a particular required targeting occurs (including reactions "before targeting" and "when X would target"), if anything interferes so that required targeting can no longer be met, the action fails. Its effects do not resolve, further targeting does not take place, and its costs are waived. It is still considered taken, but not resolved. If it was on a Strategy card, the card is discarded normally."

If this were to happen, and the personality straightened, no costs would be paid (Big D would not bow, Touch of Death would not be destroyed), no effects would occur, but Touch of Death's action will have been considered to have been "used" for the turn.
