Ambush during the action phase

L5R CCG Rules board, 23 April 2009

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Okay, I am very confused. This happens rarely, normally I only need conformation. It has been established that that during an Ambush, Deeds and Words, the promotional holding, may activate if a pekkle is destroied because it is still the action phase.

Today, I was told that you can retribution off of an ambush.

These two things seem contradictory to me.

Retribution says

Reaction: After the end of an Attack Phase in which you were the Defender:

But for deeds and words to work it must be the action phase.

Also Ambush does not create an attack phase anywhere during the effects.

Limited: Target one of your unbowed Personalities: Create a battlefield (not at any province). Assign your Personality to attack there. Assign another player’s target Personality to defend there, even if bowed. No other units may move there. Fight a battle there. After it ends, lose 5 Honor.

So I have 3 basic questions, hoping I properly explained my confusion.

A: Does Ambush create an attack phase, which retribution would be able to trigger off of? B: If it does create an attack phase, how can you play deeds and words during an ambush? C:Is anything else I'm missing here?

Today, I was told that you can retribution off of an Ambush.

Whoever told you that was mistaken, possibly basing their statement on an older printing.

As you pointed out, the MRP of Ambush creates no Attack Phase, providing no legal trigger for the MRP of Retribution.
