Confused about movement...

L5R CCG Rules board, 9 June 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I find myself extremely confused about movement/moving. There is a glaring hole in the rulebook and faq... namely it's missing a page dedicated to detailing all types of movement and what happens to and from.

Very confused about bowing + moving and when/where, etc. Many cards seem to contradict each other and further confuse movement. It seems like I have 20 different cards with 20 different sentence structures/word choices about movement and bowing, straightening, if this, then that unless it's this oh look it's that now, etc, etc.

Thanks and much appreciated,

These are quite vague questions, maybe you should ask about specific cards to get more specific explanations.

There is only one type of movement, per "Glossary, Move": To change a unit’s location between battlefields or between home and battlefield (in either direction) due to an effect that specifies that it “moves” the unit.

Bowing means only one thing, per "Glossary, Bow": To change a card from the unbowed to bowed state. See Bowed and unbowed.

Forum won't let me reply to the topic so I have to ask a new question with a new thread. Why in the world can you not reply to topics?

Do you have to bow to move? Some cards seem to suggest that you bow to move. Or does moving mean you move whether or not you are bowed or not and the card says if you bow or straighten? Or can a bowed card move or only straight ones? And if so, does that mean if a card says "move and you may straighten" that a bowed card can move?

Thanks.

If a card says you move, you move. If it doesn't say you move, you don't move.

If it says you bow, you bow. If it doesn't say you bow, you don't bow.

If it says you straighten, you straighten. If it doesn't say you straighten, you don't straighten.

A card may impose additional restrictions on movement - or rather, an ability on a card may have conditions on its legality in the constraints block - but the rulebook does not. You must obey the Rules of Presence and Location, but those apply to all Battle actions, not just those that move units.

Only authorised rules officials can reply in this forum, in the interests of boosting the signal-to-noise ratio. I hope we're succeeding. We do combine threads if they deal with similar topics; please start a new topic if you have further questions.
