The Final Wave and the Loyal keyword

L5R CCG Rules board, 28 May 2008 to 29 May 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

The Final Wave: Limited: If you have no cards left in your Fate or Dynasty deck: Bring all face-up Personalities in your provinces into play, waiving costs and ignoring restrictions.

Comprehensive rules glossary, Loyal: A Personality with the Loyal keyword cannot be controlled by a player who does not share a Clan alignment with that Personality - either by bringing into play or by changing control.

The restriction created by the Loyal keyword appears to be continuous or ongoing, rather than simply an entering play restriction. Am I correct in assuming that if you use The Final Wave to bring into play a Loyal personality from a clan you are not playing, it would allow you to ignore the restriction only until the turn ends, at which point the restriction once again prevents you from controlling the personality?

No the Loyal Personality remains under control of the player who played The Final Wave. The rule about the Loyal keyword is a restriction (see below) on effects that would make a player control a Loyal Personality: because it is a rule with "cannot" (see below), it means that such effects are not legal unless that player shares a Clan alignment with this Personality. For instance you are not allowed to use Soul Jar's Limited ability if you intend to target one of your Loyal dead Personalities whom you share no Clan alignment with, because that action would not ignore this restriction (the Good Faith Rule forbids to announce this action too).

However this rule is only checked once for each effect: at the time it attempts to make its player control a Loyal Personality. If this restriction is ignored at that time, it is not checked again later. As a consequence, if you use The Final Wave to bring into play a Loyal Personality with a Clan alignment you don't share, she enters play under your control normally and you will not lose control of her later due to her Loyal keyword.

See also this ruling about Death After Life and Loyal.

Glossary, Restriction: "Honor Requirements are a type of restriction, as are the Loyal, Unique and Singular rules."

Glossary, Cannot: "When found in game rules text, the phrase “cannot” applies to the legality of doing something in the first place; it does not imply that doing that thing is merely negated."

It occurred to me that "cannot become controlled" would be a better way to express this rule in the CR. Made that minor change just now.
