Doji Hakuseki and "his abilities"

L5R CCG Rules board, 8 April 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

What is considered as "his abilities" by Doji Hakuseki, aside from base abilities does it included copied abilities (temporary and/or permanent) as well as abilities performed by the targeted personality?

Doji Hakuseki Limited: Target another player's Personality. His controller may choose to have you gain 3 Honor. If he does not choose this, the Personality can not use his abilities until your next turn begins.

Some examples:

A> Would Hakuseki disable a permanent Ring ability copied with The Element's Path?

The Element's Path Kiho Open: Target one of your Monks and one of your non-Void Rings: Permanently copy an ability from the Ring to the Monk. The Monk permanently need not bow to pay costs of the copied action.

B> Would Hakuseki disable temporary abilities granted by The Hall of Ancestor?

The Halls of Ancestor Battle/Open: One of your target Personalities copies an ability or keyword from a target dead Lion Clan Personality you own (until the turn ends).

C> Would Hakuseki disable abilities performed by a targeted personality granted through another card like Akodo Katsumoto? (ie. Hakuseki is targeting the personality being bowed to use Katsumoto's ability and not Katsumoto himself)

Akodo Katsumoto Tactical Battle: Bow one of your target Personalities: Bow a target enemy Personality with Personal Honor equal to or less than the Personal Honor of the Personality you bowed.

D> Would Hakuseki disable abilities performed by a targeted personality through an action card like Superior Strategist?

Superior Strategist Tactical Battle: Target one of your Tacticians: Search your Fate deck for an Action card with a Battle ability. You may take an additional Battle action to use one of its Battle abilities; if you do not, discard it.

What is considered as "his abilities" by Doji Hakuseki, aside from base abilities does it included copied abilities (temporary and/or permanent) as well as abilities performed by the targeted personality?

A Personality's abilities are abilities 'on' this Personality, as defined in the Glossary: "an ability on a card is one either printed on the card, or granted to it by some effect". They include base abilities, copied abilities and granted abilities (e.g. by The Ruined City). However Doji Hakuseki's action doesn't forbid its target to perform abilities which are not 'on' him.
