Bowed Terrains

L5R CCG Rules board, 21 March 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

What would happen to a terrain like encircled terrain or blanketed forest if it were bowed by a card like gaining momentum? Thanks for your answer.

Encircled terrain Text Terrain Battle: Before this battle's resolution, the Attacker and Defender, in the order of your choice, each choose one of his units at the current battlefield. Then, move all other units there home.

Blanketed forest Winter Terrain Battle: The snow blocks travel, negating units' movement to or from this battlefield.

Gaining MomentumText Battle: Give one of your target Personalities +2F. Bow all cards with zero Gold Cost at this battlefield. If your Personality is not opposed when this battle's resolution begins, destroy him after the battle ends.

Not much. Although abilities on bowed cards cannot be used (see Abilities and actions, Using abilities) bowing a card after an action from its ability has resolved, neither negate nor end its ongoing or delayed effects.

So does this mean that if one of these terrains is played, and subsequently destroyed before the battle ends, its effects will occur regardless? In other words, once an action with a delayed effect has resolved from a card that would normally be in play, destroying that card doesn't prevent the delayed effect from occurring? As a side effect, doesn't this render the entire concept of destroying terrains academic? Or is there some distinction between bowing a card and destroying a card with respect to this that I'm missing in the CR's?

No, Terrain Action cards still follow special rules when they leave play, see Glossary, Terrain (emphasis added): "If a Terrain leaves play, its effects with a duration end. This is not negation of those effects (that is, even effects that can not be negated do not apply any more)."

The search function would have given you some insight about this: "About terrains" or "About Terrains Pt 2" deal with similar questions. Please give it a try before raising new questions.

There is no such rule about cards (Terrain or not) which bow or are bowed. There is no such rule about non-Terrain cards which leave play.

Assuming I properly understand what "a card that would normally be in play" is, if this card is not a Terrain, then yes: destroying it doesn't prevent such delayed effects from occurring. Here is an example. Shiba Danjuro (Experienced 2)'s ability reads: Battle: All Shugenja in Danjuro's army gain +1F. After this Combat Segment ends, straighten all Shugenja in your current army. Its last effect is delayed after this Combat Segment ends. If you take this action during a battle, then after its Combat Segment ends, all Shugenja in your current army straighten, even if Danjuro is bowed or if he is out of play at that time.
