"In play" and the rule of location (e.g. Borrowed Advisors)

L5R CCG Rules board, 24 February 2008 to 27 February 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Does the text "Target X in play" override the requirement for a Battle action to target cards at the current battlefield? (for example, can I target personalities at home to fulfil Borrowed Advisor's Open/Battle action requirement?)

Yes, "target X [something] in play," waives the Rule of Location for those cards. "At any location," is what you and I are used to seeing, but when applied to multiple cards it might look like it was implying that all X targets needed to be at the same location.
