To share or not to share (the blame)

L5R CCG Rules board, 1 February 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

While I was thinking of a forbidden question about Yarijutsu and A Soldier's Fate, the same question suddenly arose about Share and Share the Blame. Here it is: when I Share, how can I know whether the Personality I want to target is legal, and whether she is no longer legal during the course of this action ?

Indeed Share's one mandatory target is a Personality who can legally attach the attachment which is bowed to pay Share's cost. However the mandatory targeting of this Personality is done during the "B. Required targeting" step, based on her ability to attach this attachment specifically ("who can legally attach it", rules text, emphasis mine), which itself is chosen later: during the "C. Pay costs" step. As a consequence, I can't target any Personality before I know which attachment I am sharing but I can't choose which attachment I am sharing before I've targeted a Personality: it looks like a rattlesnake which bites its own ringing tail, doesn't it ?

I believe the Good Faith Rule guarantees the target Personality can legally attach the bowed attachment when nothing else matters, but what to do if an unfortunate incident happens ? Here is a simple example. I am a Crane player who controls a few courtiers. One of them has attached a Gunso Chitose, another one bears an item (e.g. Tsi Blade), another one is bowed. I intend to offer the Gunso to the bowed courtier so that I can straighten him later, by lobbying for instance. I announce I use the rulebook ability 'Share' and that I target this bowed courtier. My opponent, a smart Scorpion player, suddenly plays Share the Blame: my bowed courtier is dishonored, he can't legally attach a Gunso Chitose any longer because this follower has an Honor Requirement of two. What happens ? Would the Gunso still be shared regardless of the dishonorable status of the bowed courtier, would I be compelled to share the Tsi Blade with the bowed courtier, or would the action be prevented from resolving because Share's target wouldn't be legal any longer ?

Thanks for your time. _____________________________
