Strange Assembly and Shoju Sensei

L5R CCG Rules board, 18 January 2008 to 17 June 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hopefully we can continually use this thread to ask all our legacy-format card ruling questions.

Let's start...

If my opponent has a Shoju Sensei in play. He also has a personality in play which he targeted using the sensei preventing me from winning an honor victory. I am not a shadowlands hordes or naga player. I start my turn at 48+ honor and revealed the event Strange Assembly. My question is:

Will I win the game instantly or am i one of the "players unable to achieve an Honor Victory" as per Strange Assembly?

Thanks in advance.

Hopefully we can continually use this thread to ask all our legacy-format card ruling questions.

Sorry, not going to happen.

Individual formats will not get threads dedicated to them, because the thread will quickly become unsearchable because so many card titles will be mentioned in them. Additionally, creating threads in the rules forum has to be done manually. We will try to compile recent related questions into threads, but that's as far as it goes for now.

http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/rulings, Shoju Sensei: "Does not remove an Honor Victory from any player." You win.

From here.

I believe the above answer is incorrect.

Shoju Sensei says, "...target any one Personality. No player can achieve an Honor Victory while the Personality remains in play..."

Strange Assembly says, "...a player wins instantly if his Family Honor is ever 8 or more points above the amount required to win an Honor Victory. This does not apply to players unable to achieve an Honor Victory."

The cited ruling from the archive in the above answer was made to make a distinction between not being able to "use" the "ability" to win by Honor versus not "having" that "ability", such that while under the effects of Shoju Sensei you could still relinquish your "ability" to win by Honor for the purposes of such things as The Return of Fu Leng. I believe it's a minute and needlessly complicated distinction that is worthy of being sticken from the books, but I digress here.

All that said, and in any case, the archived ruling cited should not be used as precident for THIS question because Strange Assembly doesn't make that distinction. Indeed, the players it looks for to be inapplicable to its effects are the exact same players that Shoju Sensei creates, ones unable to "achieve an Honor Victory". Note that these words in quotes appear on both cards, in exactly the same way.

Thank you for your time and hopefully your reconsideration.

In regards to this thread http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=64935&p=834750&hilit=Strange+Assembly#p834750. Which of the two answers in correct? Zen said Strange Assembly would work, but MacBeth 2001 said it would not.

MacBeth2001 is correct. Strange Assembly does not let you win while Shoju Sensei is "active".
