Gold Cost for Actions on a Card

L5R CCG Rules board, 24 December 2007 to 3 January 2008

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Is it permissible to overpay the gold cost for an action printed on a card in play? (For example, paying 4 gold for Matsu Benika's action.) What if that action has no stated gold cost? (For example, paying 4 gold for Shosuro Uyeda's action)

Thanks!

http://rules.l5r.com/Costs_and_restrict ... production: "It is permitted to overpay a Gold cost by any amount, including producing Gold to pay a Gold cost of zero on (for example) an Action card. It is not permitted to pay a Gold cost for a card with no Gold cost at all."

The rules quoted for the answer talk only about paying for a card with no cost, and are ambiguous on the legality of paying for an action with no stated cost printed on a card that does have a gold cost. Could you please clarify this ambiguity?

Thanks!

I think the entry is sufficiently clear.

Zen's citation states that you may over-pay a Gold Cost by any amount. It does not restrict this to the Gold Cost of cards.

The only mention of a "card" is in reference to attempting to pay the Gold Cost of a card without any Gold Cost.

Abilities without Gold Costs don't even enter into the equation. You've never been allowed to produce Gold "just because." If there is no Gold Cost associated with an Action, you may not produce Gold to pay for the Action.

So you can overpay for the Following: - An Ability with a Gold Cost in its Costs and Restrictions section [Example: the Limited ability on Farmlands] - A Card with a printed Gold Cost "coin" value (even 0) [Examples: Rout, Block Supply Lines]

You may not produce any Gold for the Following: - An Ability without a Gold Cost in its Costs or Restrictions section [Example: the Battle ability on Matsu Robun] - A Card without a printed Gold Cost "coin" value [Example: Yobanjin Alliance]

Does that clear everything up sufficiently?
