Regarding this post: I assume that the Ruthless advance will only be able to misdirected to another defender's unit (and not back to one of the attacker's own guys), correct?

Misdirection & Ruthless Advance
A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. You have to pick targets that are allowed by Ruthless Advance. And it is still the other player's card. You don't play it as if you played it.
