A Couple More Egg Questions

L5R CCG Rules board, 7 February 2005 to 15 February 2005

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from the Wayback Machine (its copy), so posts it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

1) If I have a Singular personality and I attempt to Egg him, what happens?

2) If I have a Hida Daizu who has already died once and I Egg him, will the Egg still be able to use Daizu's ability to come back from the dead once per game?

You get another one.

2) If I have a Hida Daizu who has already died once and I Egg him, will the Egg still be able to use Daizu's ability to come back from the dead once per game?

Yes

I have an Egg question as well. Actually more of a request for verification.

If the Egg is killed...

a) Does it go to the Dynasty Discard pile (IIRC it does)

and...

b) Does it retain it's traits while in the discard pile. For example, if a player copies a Dragon with the Egg, and it dies, can they bring it back with Storms of Isawa?

Thank You

1. The egg permanantly becomes a personality (even if destroyed) as noted by accumulated rulings. As a personality i believe it would go into the dynasty discard pile.

2. It becomes an exact copy of the personality, thus giving it all such traits. So as long as it does go to dynasty pile (check no.1) you should be able to return it via storm of isawa.

I'm no official, but based on rulings i believe that the above statements are true.

I remember Zen did a card review about Egg of P'an Ku, which was really a mini-FAQ (it's on his site). In it, it was stated that once in play, the Egg acts as a complete copy of the personality, right up to being put in the dynasty discard pile. So the answer is yes, it would be in the dynasty discard, and could be targeted by cards that target dead personalities.

It can bring the Egged Dragon back, sure. But SoI doesn't ignore restrictions, so if the original Dragon is still in play and is Unique, you can't bring the Egged Dragon into play because of the restriction of it being a Unique card.

I remember Zen did a card review about Egg of P'an Ku, which was really a mini-FAQ (it's on his site).

But that was a long time ago, and the text of the Egg has changed a lot since then. Don't put much stock in what it says.

So, what about my two questions? Was Thayme right?

A player, 11 February 2005

I take it that Thayme was right then?

Do ^_^.

A simple word can worth a lot more than a little silence... What the hell am I saying ?

The egg becomes for the rest of the game, the exact card it copied, including permanent changes (such as whether or not daizu has returned yet).

This effect extends into the dynasty discard pile, where it goes if it is destroyed. It even extends into the dynasty deck, if you have an effect which requires you shuffle it into your deck. I know there's a scorpion that shuffles into the deck for a political action, and it would be possible to copy Kwanchai (exp) and put him on top of your deck, and then search for a gifts and favors, shuffling him in. Search for Advantage could also do it. This might create a marked card issue, I recommend having an extra dynasty sleeve in your possession, just in case something like this happens.

Well, not quite exact. Wether Daizu has used his trait or not is no permanent change, it's a look towards the past. So copied-returned-daizu can still return once.

I would think it's a trigger. Until he dies, the status is unreturned. Once he dies, his status is trait used. Either way, Egg's strong.

The biggest question I was wondering about was the Singular peep one.

A player, 13 February 2005

yes if you Egg a Singular guy then you do get a copy ......

The Egg of P'an Ku

May copy a Singular card. [ML, 5 August 2004]

A player, 14 February 2005

Just so it's clear to me.

You can egg...

a singular card

a unique card

a "will only join X clan" card (even if I'm not X clan)

a loyal card

so really it is any personality in play correct?

A player, 14 February 2005

Limited: Target a Personality, including a Unique Personality or one who will not join you. After entering play, this card becomes a copy of that Personality's printed card plus all permanent changes in effect on it. None of the Personality's costs need to be paid and no entering-play effects are produced.

part in bold covers Unique, Loyal and "will only join / will not join".

covers Singular.

so, yes, it can copy anything.

well, anything unless The False Hoturi is in play because he counts as the Egg for uniqueness, unlike Tamago who counts as the Egg for deck construction.

The trick to Egg of P'an Ku is that it enters play first (under your control) and then it copies the targeted card (gaining Singular, Loyal, or what have you).

Those Rules don't prohibit cards you already control gaining those traits, just you gaining control of cards which have the trait already.

As for Daizu, having used his trait is not a change to Daizu's Card. It is simply an in-game event that everyone remembers. The Egg hasn't used the trait yet, even if it copies a Daizu who has done so. It is still a distinct card from that copy of Daizu.
