L5R CCG Rules board, 6 February 2005 to 7 February 2005
A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from the Wayback Machine (its copy), so posts it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I may be the slowest person on the planet. I just realized that if a crab player lost a raid battle on purpose she/he could still use YU to decimate the winning Mantis army. And never lose a guy.
Does this really work? It seems really wrong but in a good way.

I've tried it, it's really nasty. But since there's no official ruling, I was assuming it's legal. You should definately wait for Jeff or Marty or Zen to say it's legal for sure before you implement it. (I play a Crab deck that heavily relies on Yu to make sure to make other battle decks less effective)

I'm pretty certain this has been gone over already. Yu is a result of losing the battle (not dying), so it works in the cases of "pick your battles" and this as well.
Destroying the card is not a cost of using its Yu. [JA, 18 September 2001]

Which is why Mantis Raiding decks HATE going up against Yu decks.

What confuses me a lot with Raiding & Yu is the is the timing. Under Yu trait text it says:
This occurs immediately before losing army is destroyed.
To me it sounds like precise timing trigger. So if nobody would be getting killed in Raid resolution, how can it set off in the first place?

See Rules Archive, General Rules, Yu.

Yu decks are OK. Yu Umasu decks that try to play Invincible Legions are the thing to hate and fear

The trigger for Yu is losing the battle not the dying. But I do understand the timing confusion you had.
So now that there's been some conversation and I've taken the time to read the stronghold again I have to ask. Does the winning army get an honor gain from winning the battle? It sure doesn't say so but then again it doesn't say they don't.

Does the winning army get an honor gain from winning the battle?
No.
(Edit: Fixed blatantly wrong answer. )

Hello.
DE Rulebook p.83
"gains Honor equal to twice the number of cards just destroyed"
If a card inst destroyed=> no honor gain.
Greetings.

According to the rulebook, there would still be a gain of 0 points for the winner (if it is really won, i.e., there was at least one unit in each army), or a gain of 0 for each leader on a tie. It won't get anyone closer to 40 all by itself, and it won't restore Dishonored Personalities to Honor (it takes at least a 1-point gain for that), but there is, in fact, a gain, which may be modified and otherwise reacted to.
