Weigh the cost?

L5R CCG Rules board, 3 February 2005 to 4 February 2005

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from the Wayback Machine (its copy), so posts it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Another question

if weigh teh cost is focused by itself in a duel does it count as 3 or 4

( it can add 1 to its focus value and 1 top another card focused in a duel) so if all you focus is teh oen weigh... does it work?

I believe it would be 4. If you cannot complete the whole action, (adding one to another card focused) you still do as much as possible (adding one to Weigh the Cost). I could be wrong, though.

This was dealt with on the list. It increases it's own, but has no other target to increase. You've paid the cost of focusing and revealing it. All effects that can resolve, then do. The increasing another card fails.

Yeah, that's pretty much right, but pedantry demands I tell you that it doesn't need a target. These days targeting is *explicit* (Not in a Kachiko/Kamako way either ), if it doesn't say target on the card (Dawn and afterwards), you don't need a target.

Basically, you apply as much of the effects as you can, in order. Add 1 to Weigh's focus, yep, add 1 to another card's focus... can't do that, next, draw a card, yep.

I'm not sure if this is in the archive or was clarified/asked already but here goes:

If Weigh the Cost is in the Discard Pile and I used Tsuma Dojo to be able to focus it, will it still generate its effect? (add 1 to its focus value and draw a card)

I believe the answer to this would also apply to Fortune's Smile, Misdirection, Kharmic Strike, Excellent Student, etc.

Yes, you still focus the card face down, so all the traits happen as usual.

As a side note, anybody know the interaction with "when this card is revealed as a focus" and Kakita Yariga? Or any other effect forcing you to focus face-up?
