Does Clan Alignment count as a Boldface keyword?
Boldface Keywords
A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.
Does Clan Alignment count as a Boldface keyword?
No, Clan Alignments are not boldfaced keywords.
A good example of this is Kakita Ibara, where you can see both the Clan Alignment and boldfaced Duelist keyword on the same line.
What is a boldface keyword? I am going to assume that it's a keyword that is in bold.
How do I identify something that's in bold? (no, this is not a dickish question, I am really curious). Thickness of font? Is that the only way? Is there an exhaustive list somewhere?

A boldface keyword is one which has relevance in the Rules, as opposed to relevance purely to other cards. For example, "Shugenja" is a boldface keyword, since only Shugenja can attach and cast spells, while "Samurai" is not, as there are no rules associated with the keyword (since the removal of the Seppuku player ability, anyway).
See p13 of the Comprehensive Rules.
As I understand it, text in Oracle of the Void overrides printed card text and the image in the Oracle. For example, if card x receives an errata, players are to treat the printed card as being a copy with the Oracle text on it. All the keywords in the Oracle text entries are in boldface, which means that the Oracle has essentially errata'd every card with keywords on it.
I realise that this is clearly a coding issue for the Oracle, but because of its status as the go-to source for card text, can I just confirm that currently* all keywords in Ivory are boldface for the purposes of cards like Victory through Deference?
On a more sensible note, might it be easier to refer to keywords such as cavalry as 'active' keywords, have a list of such in the comprehensive rules and a note in the rulebook that active keywords are commonly denoted by bold text to help remind players?
*I realise that currently will be very ephemeral.

And specifically referring to the card Victory Through Deference.
A number of older cards (including cards currently legal) have all of their keywords printed in a bold font. In addition, every card in the Oracle has the text for keywords in bold font (including even today's preview card Suzune, the Coy), and given that Oracle text is supposed to over-ride printed text, does this mean that all keywords are considered boldfaced? If not, and as per the ruling in the thread above referencing p.13 of the CR, where can we find a list of keywords for each environment that do have a relevant rules function behind them?
For example, according to the ruling above, you may remove Cavalry and Shugenja (in particular this renders all attached spells useless for the turn) but not Samurai, Courtier, Yojimbo, Scout or Magistrate even though all of those cards have other card interactions.Iis this correct?
This a follow-up to these posts.
My previous question is obviously answered by adjusting the coding the Oracle, whereas this is a separate question. There are a number of personalities in A Line in the Sand (Suzune the Coy, Kitsune Nakumi), and more Ivory as a whole, which create cards whose keywords are in boldface (such as Suzune's Ronin • Samurai • Scout • Yojimbo • Resilient Personality). Does this mean that keywords such as samurai are boldface for all cards that have them, boldface just for those cards that have them in boldface, or will action occur to remove the boldface from all keywords that have it despite the keywords not having associated rules text?
with regards to this: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=109399
I have a few questions. First: The keyword "unicorn clan" is, for example, printed in boldface on akikazu sensei. Is this the same keyword or is it different? If the same, why is one bold and the other not? Is there going to be a distinction between a keyword that is boldfaced and a keyword that is not boldfaced? How do implied keywords work
For the second question, I will assume that the words "unicorn clan" on akikazu sensei are the clan requirement for the sensei as detailed in the advanced rulebook (which specifies "[clan name] clan" or "all clans" for which sensei are usable). On Aranai sensei and Suikihime sensei, the keywords are crab/lion/mantis/spider/unicorn and crane/dragon/phoenix/scorpion. These are not clan requirements as listed in the rulebook (and dragon in particular is a keyword that has been used before and is currently printed on a legal card). Are there any clans that can use these sensei as they do not actually have a clan allocation as defined in the rulebook?
Third, according to the oracle wording, every single keyword on currently legal cards is boldfaced. Since oracle is the database that is used definitive card texts, doesn't that mean that all keywords are boldface?
As the ruling is that boldface keywords are those that have "relevance in the Rules, as opposed to relevance purely to other cards", is the list of boldface keywords different in BigDeck play than in Ivory? In Ivory, I believe the list to be: Cavalry, Conqueror, Destined, Duelist, Experienced (regardless of numerical value), Kensai, Kharmic (via Yung Sensei, not that removing it has any feasible effect), Loyal, Naval, Reserve, Resilient, Shugenja, Tactician, Unique.
For example, as (one version of) the seppuku rule is retained in BigDeck, Samurai and Courtier (and Shugenja, but it is boldface already) are rules-relevant. So are Brash, Double Chi, Elite, Enlightened, Ninjutsu (regardless of numerical value), Overconfident, Singular, Stalwart, and Yu (regardless of the numerical value), by their own definitions. In BigDeck, the optional rule that makes Monkey Clan a synonym for Toturi's Army is in effect; does this mean that Monkey Clan is a boldface keyword?
Similarly, does the Blood Money rule mean that all Clan Alignment keywords are boldface keywords in BigDeck play? Actually, why aren't Clan Alignment keywords considered boldface keywords in Ivory, as they have relevance to the rules (referenced in the Recruit procedure, Comprehensive Rules p. 37)?
Regarding Ninjutsu, because awkward Ninjutsu rules questions are the primary purpose of that keyword, a face-down Ninjutsu Personality appears to have the printed Ninjutsu keyword (shared with the front of the card), based on my reading of the Legacy Rules: "He also is considered a Ninjutsu Personality while face-down, although the existence and numerical value of the keyword is determined by his face-up side." What happens if Ninjutsu is stripped (and the Personality is not flipped face-up in Reaction to the stripping effect)? It is now a face-down card, in play, without guidance as to its nature, yes, because it is no longer a Personality "with the Ninjutsu keyword". Can it even get the keyword back when the stripping effect wears off, as it can no longer "see" the other side (knowledge of the face-up side of the card being a property of having Ninjutsu in the first place)?

There is a larger list, but not a DIFFERENT one.

We have decided that Clan Alignments (including their equivalents, Monk and Monkey) are not boldface keywords. It may sound arbitrary, but it's not, I assure you.
Also, in the case of Samurai and Courtier in your example, relevance to Optional rules won't determine a keyword's Boldfacey-ness either.

Nope, for the same reason.

Being "considered" to be something is not the same thing as literally having the keyword. So, Ninjutsu cannot be removed from a face-down Personality.
Per my previous topic, a boldfaced keyword has been defined as "one which has relevance in the Rules, as opposed to relevance purely to other cards". As Clan Alignment directly effects the Recruit cost of the personality in question (p10/p37 of the Comprehensive rules), why is Clan Alignment not defined as a boldface keyword?

I find your lack of faith disturbing.
But, that said, please consider this whole "boldface" thing pending and give us a little more time to work our magic.
Thank you.
