A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Per the new Reference rules:
• A trait is not optional; you must apply the effects whenever the trigger is met. • A trait will still be triggered when its card is bowed. • A trait’s triggering is not restricted to once per turn. • If multiple traits are triggered by the same thing happening, the active player decides their order.
Lets say I have Tsujiken's Coin attached to someone in a battle, and they're sent home by something like Block Supply Lines. Does the trait go off to produce two gold?
Also, may I bow my own cards for any reason -- even if it doesn't trigger a trait? For example, can I bow my own followers prior to going to battle?

I don't follow. You still need a trigger for the trait to go off. The trigger for Tsujiken's Coin isn't bowing it, that's the trait's cost. The trigger for Tsujiken's Coin, as with all gold-producing traits, is "when you pay a gold cost"

You can't bow, or otherwise change the game state of any card, without a rule, a cost or an effect directing you to do so.
