Combining Ranged Attacks and Fortune's Charm

L5R CCG Rules board, 16 March 2014 to 17 March 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

A scenario arose that is as follows:

Player A has a Dark Naga Experienced with a Versatile Blade and a Fortune's Charm. He is 11 Force and has -2 to all Ranged Attacks that target him.

Player B Has a Tsuruchi Kaito with an Expert Archers and Spearmen as well as a Sasada with Ashigaru Spearmen. Player B is playing Gidayu Sensei.

Player B announces Kaito's Ranged 3, combines with Expert Archers' Ranged 3, Spearmen's Ranged 2, and uses the Sensei to combine with the Ashigaru Spearmen's Ranged 1. He also interrupts with two Unholy Strike to make it a Ranged 13 at the 11 Force Dark Naga.

Does Fortune's Charm shrink all of the ranged attacks that Player B is trying to combine to result in a Ranged 6 or will it only shrink the 13 to 11?

Pg 18 of the Reference Rules document clarifies that:

Because only the original effect actually targets the card, a reduction or increase to the effect’s strength that depends on a particular card being targeted only reduced the total combined attack (for example, “Ranged Attacks targeting this card have -2 strength”).

It only reduces the combined 13 to 11, because the reduction depends on the target.
