Attach and Cast Spells like Open Action

L5R CCG Rules board, 20 January 2014 to 21 January 2014

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

After to attached the spell Touch of Death on Isawa Amihiko. Can cast this spell immediately? Because the text of Isawa Amihiko have the next note "Shugenja may attach and cast spells" or my interpretation is wrong and I must permit to the opponent do any open action, between attach and cast this spell.

The reminder text means that Shugenja may attach Spells, and Shugenja may cast Spells. It means they can do both things, not that they can do them at once. You still need an (usually Open) action to attach the spell, and another action to use the ability in it. Unless you somehow get an additional action to do that in a row, opponents get an opportunity to take an Open action in between, or pass, before you use the Spell you just attached.

Most Shugenja in Ivory Edition have this reminder text. It means that the Shugenja is allowed to attach spells, and that abilities on a Spell may be used while the Spell is attached to him or her. Non-Shugenja Personalities may not normally attach Spells (either through Equiping or transfering), and even if they do end up with a Spell attached (eg by losing the Shugenja keyword after attaching the Spell), the Spell's abilities may not be used.
