Questions on Performing

L5R CCG Rules board, 29 October 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Hi Rules Team,

I searched things like "Shugenja Spell Perform" to search on my first question but got so many results (on a variety of topics) that I didn't find anything directly meaningful. I wasn't sure what to search for the second so I thought to just ask it here.

First Question:

If a spell is attached to a Shugenja, is he assumed to be performing that spell even if the spell's effect lacks "performing" references? For example, Channeling the Fallen says to bow the Spell to produce a Ranged Attack. No mention of performing, so strictly speaking I'd assume that no, the Shugenja isn't performing anything. I could have sworn I read a ruling somewhere though saying that they are (for the purposes of, say, responding to a spell with Iron Will). Could you please clarify that for me? Thematically speaking we know that the Shugenja is the one casting the spell but Game Mechanics and theming are two different things!

Second Question:

Do cards in the Ivory Bugged like Strength of the Divine assume "performing" during the EE cycle, even if they do not have "perform" or "performing" on the card? This came up during a match because cards like that basically made a guy's Maiden's Deck useless (it revolves around Iron Will/Effortless to take tempo, but since the newer Ivory cards lack any mention of "performing" his Maidens became open season). I would assume that the answer is that if the card doesn't have "performing" on it then it is not "performed" but I'd like to make sure in the off chance there really is some floating rule out there I hadn't heard of yet.

Thanks!

If a spell is attached to a Shugenja, is he assumed to be performing that spell even if the spell's effect lacks "performing" references?

Yes, per the rules on performing (at least for the remainder of EE). A Personality or Follower is performing an action if its controller is the player taking the action (or, if the Personality or Follower is out of play, if its owner is the player taking the action), and any of these things is true: The action is from an ability on the Personality or Follower. The action is from an ability on an Item or Spell in the Personality’s unit. The Personality or Follower is chosen or designated as a performer in the action's constraints block, using the word "performing."

Do cards in the Ivory Bugged like Strength of the Divine assume "performing" during the EE cycle, even if they do not have "perform" or "performing" on the card?

If the ability is on an item or a spell attached to Personality, or is on the Personality or Follower, the Personality or Follower is performing it, per the rule I just quoted you above. If it's on a Strategy card (or Holding, or Event, etc.), it *has* to explicitly say "perform", otherwise it isn't performed.
