Without Mercy triggered twice

L5R CCG Rules board, 28 February 2013 to 12 March 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

I am afraid I cannot par down the searches to find the answer to this.

If I use without mercy to gain an additional action, then resolve the new action, can I still go back to the original trigger to use another Without Mercy?

Reversed. See below.

Hi Rules Team,

This is in regards to viewtopic.php?p=1342985#p1342985.

Am I take this ruling to mean that the action you take following Without Mercy does not interrupt the Reaction window allowing you to chain actions even if they target opponents? If I am reading the above-linked ruling correctly, I would be able to:

A. Play an Action on my own personality (say, Unstoppable Strike).

B. Play Without Mercy in response to Unstoppable Strike.

C. Play the Battle Action from Unstoppable Strike

D. Play another Without Mercy in response to the original Reaction Window, etc...

Step D seems out of place here, but per the above ruling...

So you resolve the Battle action A, then react with Without Mercy, play another Battle action B, and then your opponent has still the chance to react to the resolution of Battle Action A.

(emphasis mine)

...it would appear that the Battle Action you take in response to Without Mercy is part of the bigger Reaction window, as opposed to the standard your-turn-my-turn of the phase.

For my sake I hope I'm reading this wrong but a Rules Team perspective would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My colleague is in error. Additional actions are not taken until after everything triggered by the end of the granting action has been resolved or applied. Thus, if you wanted to play multiple Without Mercy's in response to one action, to get multiple additional actions, these are all played in Reaction action round for Reactions triggered "After an action resolves" - Step D of the Timing Sequence. After this action round completes, the additional actions from the Without Mercy's are taken.

See Glossary, Additional Action: A granted additional action does not count against the normal sequence of actions in the current segment or phase; for example, an additional Battle action is taken without waiting for, or expending, the next normal chance to take a Battle action. When an additional action is granted while a non-Reaction action is in progress, the timing of the additional action is delayed: the opportunity to take it happens once the current non-Reaction action has ended, and once the opportunity to play Reactions to the end of the action has passed.

The rule AkodoGilador quoted specifies "while a non-Reaction action is in progress", so I think Bayushi Mamoru gave the correct answer (Without Mercy is a Reaction, so unaffected by this rule). Am I right?

This is under discussion, stay tuned.

The CR rules on additional actions have been (extensively) updated. The additional action is taken at an additional opportunity to act in the current action round, before the next regular opportunity. It does not count against the normal sequence of actions in the current segment or phase; for example, an additional Battle action is taken without waiting for, or expending, the next normal chance to take a Battle action. [Changed 7 March 2013]

All copies of Without Mercy have to be played before the first of the granted additional actions is taken. Once the first Battle action is taken, the timing window for reacting with Without Mercy to the previous action is closed. This is a reversal.
