Sniping vs Precision

L5R CCG Rules board, 22 January 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Assuming I'm attacking my opponent and my battle action is to trigger a ranged attack, in this example perhaps from Siege Volley. (ranged 4 attack)

Now, assuming that my opponent and I would like to play both trigger, (me with sniping) and (my opponent with precision to reduce).

Who will have the oppurtunity to do so? Me or opponent?

Scenario a) as the active player, after announcing a ranged attack and targetting, i get to double my ranged before my opponent can reduce it. b) since i announced the action, opponent can have the first oppurtunity to reduce my ranged before i can sniping to double. c) Both players announce their reaction to the same trigger, but as the attacker, (active player), I can choose to resolve sniping first before precision can reduce.

If (c) is the scenario, would that mean in this scenario, sniping would almost always, (unless the attacker tries to be funny and resolve differently) take precedence over precision?

Thanks.

Precision Reaction: After a Melee or Ranged Attack is targeted: Give it +2 or -2 strength.

Sniping Reaction: After a Ranged Attack is targeted: Give it a strength bonus equal to its current strength.

The answer is a), because you're the active player (in your example). The active player has the first opportunity to react the trigger (targeting a Ranged Attack). So you'd have the chance of announcing, and resolving your Sniping first. Once Sniping resolves, and your Siege Volley got pumped to strength 8, now can your opponent react with Precision (if he still wants to).

If two players want to play Reactions to the same trigger, they don't get to announce it simultaneously - there is no "stack" in L5R. The active player has the round priority for all kinds of Reactions, and his Reaction will always be fully resolved before the other player can take his turn of reacting to the same trigger. (Note that this happens because the trigger is the same for both Reactions. Different triggers will interact in a different way and will probably have different timings)
