Lady Matsu's Rage and Feign Death

L5R CCG Rules board, 19 January 2013

A topic from AEG's L5R CCG Rules forum, copied for Oracle of the Void from a copy of the forum saved in October 2015, so pages it didn't save are missing. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Suppose I have Lady Matsu's Rage in play and destroy an enemy personality (for example, using Tactical Assault) so that it would be removed from the game. Can my opponent still play Feign Death to bring the personality back?

Lady Matsu's Rage (trait only): After your action resolves that destroyed any Personalities: Remove them from the game.

Feign Death: Reaction: After the resolution of an action or a battle that destroyed a performing Personality you own: Bring him into play, ignoring costs and Honor Requirement. Bow him. Dishonor him. Lose 2 Honor.

Suppose I have Lady Matsu's Rage in play and destroy an enemy personality (for example, using Tactical Assault) so that it would be removed from the game. Can my opponent still play Feign Death to bring the personality back?

Lady Matsu's Rage is a triggered trait with the same trigger than Feign Death. Triggered traits have a slightly faster priority (C) than Reactions (D). See:

Timing sequence If two or more reactions, triggered traits, or rules procedures are triggered at the same point in time, follow this sequence from A through D to decide their order.[...] A: Delay, negation, prevention.[...] B: Substitution.[...] C: Other non-Reactions. Anything else that is triggered at this point but is not a Reaction happens now. This includes triggered traits, delayed effects, indefinite conditional effects, triggered rulebook effects[...] If more than one of these things conflict, the active player decides the order in which they happen. D: Reactions. Reactions may now be taken following an action round procedure.

So you would attempt to destroy the personality, your opponent wouldn't be able to prevent it (A), delay it (A) or substitute it (B), and then your Celestial would remove the personality from the game (C) before your opponent can react at (D).

(Note that your opponent could react with Feign Death because the trigger is legal but he'd fail to bring back the personality because cards removed from the game "will not enter other areas unless an effect specifically says it returns them from outside the game", here).
