[LEGACY/OBH] I just want to make sure but...

Are these considered two separate personalities?

A player, 2 December 2025 09:07

They're both EXP 2 Matsu nimuro but..different statline, different ability, Even different name technically, but the devil is in the details.

[Legacy/OBH] Does the honor gain from Tadaji sensei stack with... Plains of the Maiden/Shiotome Halls?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 2 December 2025 21:05 · in reply

Yes, you get both. Even though the effects and triggers are the same, they are still two separate cards/effects.

A player, 2 December 2025 22:56

ShE - If I play this, and bow a personality when doing it, does the discipline stay on the card forever or only for the turn?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 2 December 2025 22:58 · in reply

Only until the end of the turn.

Kachiko inexp's ability won't have an effect since Betrayal checks the printed PH right?

[attachment: printing_966_2_details.png] [attachment: printing_802_1_details.png]
saaam (not official), 3 December 2025 06:50

That's how it reads, yeah.

saaam (not official), 3 December 2025 06:51

But similar effects will be worded that way, since the game rules set a Dishonoured Personality's PH to 0 and keep it there until they're re-Honoured.

A player, 3 December 2025 07:56 · in reply

Wasn't there a rule that doesn't allow to play the "same card" (not by title) more than once per turn ?

A player, 3 December 2025 10:11

[Lotus]: "Hiruma Oda exp" -> does his text "It does not count for Enlightment while in play" refer to "Enlightment Victory" or the "Enlightened" keyword or both ?

Answers on: Hiruma Oda
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 December 2025 10:43 · in reply

No. Just OPT Rule on individual abilities, but that Strategy has two separate abilities. So, you can only Discipline it on the same turn, AND only for the other ability, not the one you already used that turn.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 December 2025 10:44 · in reply

Just the Victory condition. It still counts for the Enlightened keyword.

A player, 3 December 2025 11:04

Thanks for both answers  👍

Asking like a newb... how does arc/edition mix 🤔 is it allowed to play diamond arc with different arc/edition or only if there's an mrp?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 December 2025 13:09 · in reply

If the tournament is run as a simulation of a particular arc, you only play the cards as they stood by the end of that arc, including any MRPs and errata up to that point.

So, if it's Diamond, you would play a card that was MRP'd in Lotus by its Diamond printing, but if a Gold card was MRP'd in Diamond, you couldn't play the Gold version (or if we're talking physical cards, you could play a Gold or Lotus version of a Diamond card, but you'd have to treat its text as if it were the DE MRP).

A player, 4 December 2025 00:41

saaam (not official), 4 December 2025 00:42

Well, kinda, yeah. But you can easily get 0-1 PH peeps.

A player, 4 December 2025 00:42

Its still good. Just off the peep

A player, 4 December 2025 01:14

Its also keeping until the end of the game. That's pretty good against a lot of decks, especially Shadowlands.

saaam (not official), 4 December 2025 01:24

Yeah. However, there's always just better cards. Having to be in Battle is a huge ask for most of the decks that would play it.

saaam (not official), 4 December 2025 01:25

Test of Honour, Force of Will, Remorseful Seppuku, Shame, et al., are all better cards than that in probably >99.9% of decks.

Yeah, "while remains" has always meant "until it's not" as an effect duration. Probably could be clearer, but it might actually be defined in the 20F CR (not sure? Can't check immediately.), because it was used right up into Siege Clan War (see Kachiko).

[OBH] with the House of Tao (dragon SH) if one of your personalities becomes shadowlands for any card effect, you loose the ring?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 5 December 2025 18:49 · in reply

No, "Blood Money" is shorthand slang for the Rule where if you pay 2 more Gold for someone from your Clan, you can ignore their HR. It was the only way to play Doji Domotai in SE and CE.

[EE] can't find specific rules for retainers, are they just considered a standard holding? I ask because this card seems to break the economic balance from most other holdings in EE:

A player, 9 December 2025 11:12
[attachment: printing_1143_3_details.png]
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 9 December 2025 11:13 · in reply

Note that it is not legal for EE. It has no bug. It is a Draft-only card. Also, there are no special Retainer rules, it's just a keyword that some other cards may look for.

A player, 9 December 2025 11:14

no celestial promos are legal in EE then? I thought they were

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 9 December 2025 11:15 · in reply

Well, it depends on the promo? Some have bugs, some don't. Also, some Celestial promos may only have SE and/or CE bugs, not EE bugs, so they wouldn't be legal for EE either.

A player, 9 December 2025 11:15

thanks!

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 9 December 2025 11:17 · in reply

Also note, some may be banned. "All That Will Be Lost" is a CE/EE-bugged Celestial promo, but it was banned from EE tournament play.

A player, 9 December 2025 16:28 · in reply

Brilliant Artisan is a draft-only card. There are a lot of Celestial promos that were either printed with Emperor Legality, or were reprinted in Emperor Edition later on. This particular one was draft-only, and thus, not legal for play in normal games.

A player, 9 December 2025 16:29 · in reply

Retainers are just normal holdings. The Retainer keyword is just a keyword that applies to the holding.

Yes, for most of the game that was true, but it changed in 20F, which OBH uses as a primary Rules base, and I don't believe there is such an exception built directly into OBH.

The MRP of PPG actually did add that text. The Oracle just isn't displaying the MRP as the default image unfortunately, because both versions are technically the same "instance", being a 20F promo.

About how fortifications enters in play in OBH was talked last january. (link)

kempy_nezumi (not official), 11 December 2025 06:54

There was a confusion about PPG during Ivory. In Ivory Fortifications entered play unbowed, then they changed it in 20F to enter bowed. Meanwhile they printed 3 versions of PPG, and depends when it was released it has different trait.

If @kempy_nezumi is correct about his first answer, then also no. Question under Lotus Rules. If Doji ran was ever at a battelfield, you satisfy rule of precense. But I think Rule of relevance still takes effect for cards like strength of the crane right? You cannot target a personality on a different battelfield to use strength of the crane? anyone can confirm?

[attachment: printing_7549_1_details.png] [attachment: printing_2137_1_details.png]
A player, 17 December 2025 23:49

@Brook Cunningham

A player, 17 December 2025 23:53

Here is the rule of relevance from lotus rulebook • A player can take only Battle and Open actions that involve the current battle somehow. This is called the Rule of Relevance. The action must: • Come from, target, affect, play, or create a card or token at the current battlefield or attached to the current Province, or • Target or affect the current Province itself, or • Move a card or token into the current battlefield or onto to the current Province

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 17 December 2025 23:54 · in reply

Actually, I'm pretty sure you can use SotC tageting a Crane you control anywhere as long as the target of the RA is at the current battlefield (and you have presence, of course, be it from Ran's trait or actually having it). Notice, Relevance bullet 1 indicates the action must (underlined emphasis mine) "Come from, target, affect, play, or create". It "affects" the RA target, so you're good.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 17 December 2025 23:55

dont worry, its not a question for tourney so take your time

A player, 18 December 2025 00:00

i think the targeting of the crane its just for determining the strenght of the SotC

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 18 December 2025 00:05

Ok ok, so, here's the answer. You can't do it, sorry, but not for anything to do with the Rules of P and R; by just those Rules, it is legal, as I tricked myself into thinking above. However, there are more, different Rules that prevent it! A Ranged Attack must implicitly target a card opposing the card producing it, and your target Crane is producing it, so he has to be there. How did I determine he's producing it? Oh, why did you have to ask that? Because producing in this sence is = performing. And how did I determine he's performing it? If a Personality is involved in the costs of an action, they peform it, and "Target a Crane Clan Personality you control" is before the second colon and therefore is a cost. Whew.

A player, 18 December 2025 00:05

no no... the crane is not producing the Range attack

A player, 18 December 2025 00:05

is like a tsuruchi tech

A player, 18 December 2025 00:05

ohh i just read the performing

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 18 December 2025 00:07

Yeah, Tsuruchi Tech doesn't have to worry about any of that, because it isn't produced by a card that can be in an army, and it therefore does not need to "oppose" its target.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 18 December 2025 00:11

See, Rule of Relevance is really loose, but it's the specific restrictions of RAs that prevent a Crane outside the battle from doing SotC. Whereas, as a counter example, a Shugenja at home could legally under the Rule of Relevance cast Biting Steel on a guy at the battle and satisfy it, which is why I initially thought SotC would be good to go too, until I looked closer at RAs specifically.

[ShE] Mishime Sensei says the gold cost of Maho actions costs 2 less for each player with a Shadowlands card.

If I recall correctly, keywords on cards do not transfer to their abilities, so, the ability on Mishime Sensei is not a Maho action, therefore that action does not have its cost reduced?

Or, do abilities on cards have the keywords of the card?

Answers on: Mishime Sensei
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 20 December 2025 18:41 · in reply

It was changed specifically for Onyx+; keywords go up and down again, like they did back in Celestial and before. An ability's keywords are keywords of the card, and a card's keywords are keywords of its abilities.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 21 December 2025 17:12 · in reply

Terrains have been a thing in all 20 years of the game. Up until very late in the game, though, once one was in play, you had to use a separate card effect to remove it if you wanted to play a different one. Ivory style Terrains just sort of consolidate that all into one effect.

Ah very good

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 21 December 2025 17:23 · in reply

{ShE} Embrace the mountain. Is the targeting of your unbowed shugenja or a monk a "cost".? If you do not have an unbowed shugenja or monk can you still play this card?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 21 December 2025 18:02 · in reply

It's not a cost, it's required targeting. You must have an unbowed Monk or Shugenja to target to legally announce the action, and it will then bow them. However, if you somehow prevent just the bowing effect, the rest will still happen.

- As it doesn't perform the attaching action, I assume Luxurious Silk's ability (now that it can no longer be used for recruit or attach actions) allows you to pay for those followers?

- During battle at provinces where Barracks is not attached, am I correct in understanding that this creates a sort of quantum unit, which can perform actions and be targeted by actions (provided they don't require a personality); adds its force to the defending army, but isn't destroyed for losing as the cards are not actually at the battlefield?

[attachment: printing_706_1_select.png] [attachment: printing_4136_1_select.png]
Answers on: Barracks, Kaiu Sensei
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 24 December 2025 13:20 · in reply

1. In an environment where Luxurious Silk cannot pay for Recruit or Equip, no, its Reaction cannot pay for Followers going onto the Barracks. Barracks's trait simply modifies what you can do with the Equip action.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 24 December 2025 13:39 · in reply

2. The Barracks is considered to be a defending unit at every Province's battlefield under Kaiu Sensei's effects and will therefore be destroyed like one at any losing battle, even if not physically present at that Province.

- the part in the cost where you need a performing personality is for you to play the card - which will result to a delayed effect - the delayed effect will only happen after the next time an event resolves (regardless of your board state, even if you have zero personalities in play) - after the face-up monk/dragon clan personality (that had their GC reduced to 0) enters play on the turn the delayed trigger happens, that's when you'll check if you have another personality you control (to discard)

kempy_nezumi (not official), 28 December 2025 11:34 · in reply

Shouldnt be 0? There's no such thing like (-) HR for Followers. I mean they never printed something like this.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 28 December 2025 11:35

Also absent stat is often treated as 0.

A player, 28 December 2025 11:38

yeah that sounds more accurate. initially thought we treated it as an absent stat, but that's what i saw on the current published docs. i'll look into clearing this up

A player, 28 December 2025 11:43

as far as intent goes, the current obsidian hand rules treat followers without a printed HR to have the lowest possible value for it (instead of being an absent stat)

A player, 28 December 2025 12:02

But the question is whether or not the trait would still check for printed follower HR when the mechanic itself is no longer used

A player, 28 December 2025 12:04

[OBH] As in, would Masutaro attach a follower with an HR of two (or higher) in any legacy format where followers ignore their printed HR when attaching?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 28 December 2025 12:07

OBH follows HR for Followers. AEG Legacy doesn't but theres Optional Rule for this.

A player, 28 December 2025 12:08

hence the disclaimer - for obsidian hand legacy, the 'mechanic' (rules tied to it) is always present. Masutaro would see a the HR of followers printed without it (Coils of Madness and beyond) to have the lowest value (which is 0 - i'll likely edit the one published to correct this in a few)

[ShE]: Regarding the new item "Kaiu Plate", does it only works against abilities on personalities (copied, inherited, etc.) or also with strategies that force a personality to do something, e.g. dueling ?

Answers on: Kaiu Plate
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 29 December 2025 10:07 · in reply

The former. Note the definition of "from" in the CR, pg 78-79:

"Some things check to see if other effects, actions, or targeting come “from” a given source. The source is the card that the effect, action or targeting is printed on, or the rulebook if it is printed there... ...exception: Effects of traits and abilities given to other cards, copied from other cards, or on created cards, come from the card they are on."

A player, 29 December 2025 18:47

[ShE] For purposes of Dangai Sensei, if I had these personalities in play, how many Clan Alignments would I have? And which personalities count for which clans?

Is it 3 clans +1 for unaligned? Is it 8? One for each listed "Clan"? Or is there something I'm missing?

For that matter, Dangai says I can recruit personalities with a clan alignment other than my own for 1 less Gold. - If my Clan Alignment is Scorpion, can I recruit Doji Maya for 5, because she's also Crane Clan? - Can I recruit Tsuruchi Yurio for 7 because he's Wasp Clan? Or for that matter, Tanuki Clan? - I expect I'd have to pay the out-of-clan penalty for Isawa Taisho, thus making him cost a total of 7.

I do understand that Clan keywords are not the same as Clan Alignment, I'm just trying to ensure that I understand it correctly.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 29 December 2025 19:23

So, I assume your first question is in relation to the Sensei's second trait, and if so, you are correct that among those Personalities pictured, you control 3 Clan Alignments (+1 for the trait because of the 4 Unaligned Personalities).

For the other 3 questions:

1. Yes. 2. No. As you said, those "Clan" keywords are not "Clan Alignments". 3. Correct; +2 -1

A player, 29 December 2025 19:24

alright.

A player, 29 December 2025 19:26

I would really like to figure out how to make a Tanuki deck work, but I can't just add Tanuki into a deck that wants to use out-of-clan cards, because I usually want to have unique personalities among them. Like, I'd want to use the Celestial Dragon, and Shikei, and Toku Tsudao.

A player, 29 December 2025 19:28

none of them work with Tanuki. And the number of specifically Tanuki Clan personalities is excruciatingly limited, and they don't seem to synergize very much. I'm sure there's a way to make them work, I just haven't worked out what it is.

Well, yeah. But, rarely. Usually just a bunch of token Personalities. Occasionally you get a box that does something. They did that at the beginning, and it caused a lot of problems (read: Ninja and Spirit), so it went back to being a gag thing, than actual supported Factions.

A player, 29 December 2025 19:35

at least, it was eventually.

A player, 29 December 2025 19:36

until they decided to screw it all

A player, 29 December 2025 19:48

I'd appreciate it if there were more Ratlings in ShE... Just a couple would be enough.

I think building a Ratling deck really wants you to have a bunch of Renew personalities, and none of the Ratlings have that. And most of the Naga personalities specifically care about Nagas rather than Akasha clan personalities, as does the Stronghold.

So it feels pretty awkward to build Ratlings at the moment. But also, maybe that's intentional? Like, synergies among keywords do seem to be less focused than they used to be. It seems like it's far more useful to just build with good cards than it is to build around a keyword, and just occasionally being able to use the synergies seems like it's good enough most of the time. So, maybe that's not actually that big a deal.

Just to clarify, Black Powder Tactics is NOT bringing it in using the recruit action, which is what is referenced in the rulebook.

The Rulebook states, "Holdings use the Recruit action or procedure to enter play, and enter play in the bowed state (that is, already bowed, without bowing)." Black Powder Tactics is an exception to the first half of that sentence, as it does not invoke the Recruit action or invoke "Recuit" as an effect, but it does not contain any exceptions to the latter half.

A player, 30 December 2025 02:02

Sure, wanted to make sure that it was a second bit of information seperate from the first part. And not simply part of the recruit action.
