dumb question: what are the draft rules for old 5R.
Fun fact: the rules for Gencon do not actually display the rules 😦

Before Emperor there were special promo Strongholds and you should have special Draft Packs with fixed cards. In Emperor arrived Draft Strongholds in boosters and Draft Pack became useless.
I’ll take anything at this point. All I got on me is an unoped box of seeds of decay. I can print up some strongholds if needed
If you want stick to Emperor era ruleset, use this Stronghold
If you want to use Ivory/20F era you may use this:
For the actual GenCon event, we’ll be using Ivory-era packs, where the cards for the strongholds were included on the “premium”/token card in the pack
@Jeff Williamson you here? Not familiar with screen name.
Lapp said he didn’t have any card on him other than promo rares
At least Seeds of Decay is EE, so the Gov Estate should suffice and you won't need the Draft Pack contents of old.
Jeff Williamson.
Oh, sweet. I’ll hit him up on FB 🙂
Jeff will get me sorted out 🙂
Choose wisely. 😄
But as @Brook Cunningham mentioned above, if you will draft EE era cards, you maybe should stick to Governor's Estate and EE Rules, including Draft ones.
Thanks!
[Imperial] Can the brotherhood of shinsei stronghold put the ring of the void into play?
I don't see why not?
"Repeatable Reaction, w: Before you would trigger a Ring's printed trait that would put it into play, or if you ever meet the conditions for a Ring's printed action which would put it into play, search your Fate deck for that Ring, show it, and put it into your hand. (If Reacting to meeting a trait's trigger, you then have a chance to trigger that trait after taking this action.)"
So you have no hands, you bow the SH to fish the Ring of the Void into your hand, then play it.
oohhh ok gotcha. I didn't realize it pulls the ring to your hand first but that makes a lot of sense
Thanks!
@Brook Cunningham weird question came up during Seige last night. It ended up not mattering, but gonna ask anyways'
When the Rokugani players conquer Otosan Uchi, does the ability let you resurrect dead Thunders?
Yes, it does. There are not separate sections to the Dynasty discard pile, only separate states in which Personality cards exist within it (discarded or dead), but Otosan Uchi lets you search the pile, which is the totality of it.
Thank you!
[OBH] Glassblower: Can I activate it's ability multiple times to pay for a single card?
After your turn begins, give this Holding Glass tokens until it has four. Repeatable Reaction: When paying a Gold Cost, remove zero to four Glass tokens from this card to produce an equal amount of Gold.
You can pay up to 4 gold. You have an example aboutbthe card you want to pay múltiple times?
Any card, just wondering if I can trigger the reaction multiple times to pay for a single cost (like say remove one and then remove one again)
Like Efirm, I can see little reason you'd want to. Maybe if you're afraid someone will Fall on Your Knees a 4G payment during Battle and want to spread it out?
Anyway, that said, I am fairly sure you cannot, but I'd encourage you to dig out the Emperor CR or OBH Rules themselves to make sure I'm correct. But from my own head here, my belief is that there should be a clause present that Repeatable (or in Emperor terms, "more than OPT") Reactions, like triggered traits, cannot trigger/React to the same trigger more than once, in this case, "paying X card's cost".
We actually had a bit of trouble with that in Onyx, as the same Rule was not carried into the 20F CR for Interrupts (for a number of reasons), and we wanted to make some Repeatable Interrupts without them infinitely being used in the same instance, so we added that Rule in Onyx as well as an explicit exception in the Courage ability's own text.
Example like you have 4 six gold cost in clan personalities up and 4 three gold producing holdings and a glassblower. You should be able to pay 3 gold plus react to make 4 on all four guys for cheap if it's repeatable right?
Oh. Single card. Nvm
Digging further into Emperor and Ivory rulebooks, as per your suggestion, I came across the following: "If more than one Reaction can be triggered at the same time, you decide the order in which they happen using a separate action round. The active player has the first opportunity to take a Reaction to the trigger or pass, followed by the other player, and then the active player has another opportunity. The action round continues until both players pass consecutively on taking Reactions to that trigger."
Beyond that I have found nothing that states that these reactions cannot come from the same repeatable action. Only that Traits trigger before reactions.
Now I'd argue that paying gold with a holding's gold trait kinda acts like a reaction and both 'Luxurious Silk' and 'Barley Farm' allow their trait and ability to be stacked for a single cost. I wasn’t sure if there was anything explicitly requiring multiple triggers to allow the reaction to be triggered multiple times or explicitly forbidding it from reacting to a single trigger. But I have found nothing to that effect.
I was suggesting the online Comprehensive Emperor Rules, which I think @kempy_nezumi has somewhere in the Dropbox? Such a nuance would be too subtle for the Rulebook, I think, and there's no point in looking at Ivory/20F Rules as Reactions don't exist in those formats.
Also, your LS/Barley Farm example isn't quite to the point. I'm saying the restriction should apply to the same action, not just the same card.
Btw: What's the reasoning behind Glassblower's 0 to 4 rather than 1 to 4 token removal?
Literal interpretation of the original text, "Removed any number of". 0 is a number of tokens that it could have on it.
Ok, the Comprehensive rules are clear: Additionally, any single copy of a Reaction action (that is, from a single given source) may not be taken more than once to the same trigger, even if a more general effect makes it possible to take the Reaction more than once per turn. [ADDED Jan 31 2013]
Yep. Gonna pat myself on the back a bit here and say, "Knew it " 😉
This does mean however that with increased gold production (that isn't limited to bowing) you could remove 0 tokens to get 1 gold, though? Right?
Like say from Bountiful Harvest
Yep, that tracks.
I was this 🤏 close to infinite gold 😆 😅
Well... looking at bountiful specifically, perhaps not.
Its Oracle wording says, "produce one additional Gold each time they produce Gold", which would imply they have to be making more than 0 to start before getting any extra. The original wording isn't that specific, but I bet it's Oracle'd that way based on a contemporary ruling.
[ivory/20F],[OBH] Is yoritomo yusuke bow to produce 2 gold an ability or a trait? If it is an ability is it repeatable?
Never really seen it being played much during ivory/20f and traits have always been placed above abilities, just below the keywords.
👉 Please tag your rules questions with [edition/format] you are asking for. Please use square brackets like [SE], [OBH], [20F] etc.
Its a trait and you may use it any times per turn if you find a way to straighten Yosuke.
[ShE] Is Dishonor it's own win-condition? Or does it count as a military victory because the opponent is removed from the game, and you're the last one standing?
I recall that was a thing at one point, and I think it was changed at some point, but I don't recall when exactly.
or what it changed to.
okay, nevermind, I just looked it up
"When two players are in the game, or in the later stages of a game with more players when only two remain, if a player loses the game for having -20 Honor, the remaining player has won a Dishonor victory"
though... that then brings up more questions... If you can dishonor your opponent to the point where they're removed from the game, but you have this card in play, and thus can't win a Dishonor victory, does that mean both players lose?
Does that mean if you KNOW you will lose the game, and your opponent has one of these in play, and you have the means, you can choose to dishonor yourself, thus drawing the game?
Is this an intended scenario for this card?
Conditions upon how you may win do not affect how your opponent may lose, and if they lose, in a two-player game, you win by default.
okay, so that means Path of Vengeance technically allows you to win via Dishonor?
seems like a pretty good option for a Mantis dishonor deck.
Yep. It only prevents non-Military conditions where, "I win, therefore you lose." If the other (or all) player(s) lose, you win no matter what.
[Modern] question with Takeru sensei. If a holding bows to produce gold, does the sensei gets 1 honor?
Ha. Yes, unless the Holding was printed in Twenty Festivals or later. For those, I am not sure and would have to consult the 20F CR which I don't have handy at the moment.
To elaborate, prior to 20F, a Holdings' printed traits in their text box produced the Gold. After 20F, the GP stat is the only thing that governs production, and I'm not sure if that was also considered a trait or not?
question with Utaku Ji-Yun. we dont get her trait, if she is dishonored, does she have 0 PH? or she cant and she has 1?
Neither. I'll explain...
Being "dishonorable" is a state a Personality can be in, signified by inverting the card. Per the Rulebook, being in that state means your PH has a maximum value of 0.
Ji-Yun's trait means that, while she is in play, all your dishonorable Paragons ignore that Rule stated above about max PH. Therefore, they have their full PH (give or take any other modifying effects). So, while dishonorable in a vacuum, she's 4.
Also check Shamate Keep Stronghold.
[Modern]: Do i gain the +1 Honor when Proclaiming while having the SH "The Utaku Plains" from CE in play ? According to the 20f Rules you Proclaim after and not while the Personality enters play, so i would assume yes.
Yes, the Plains would affect the PH of the Personality before/when you gain the Honor for Proclaiming them. Very technically, though, you don't Proclaim after they enter play. You choose to Proclaim when Annoucing that you're Recruiting, but the gain is delayed until after they enter play.
@Brook Cunningham Modern/20f-
Can [Daigotsu xp3] "take control" of Loyal personalities?
he can target them, but you can't take control of them, no.
Andra is right. The target will get Shadowlands, but Loyal will make the control change fail if the target isn't Spider.
Modern/20f-
two enemy personalities at the battle field. I target both with [S&C]. Can enemy opponent use [Ryoshun] to "target the first person twice" (no, because [S&C] is announced as "..target 2 enemy..."?)
(but yes, if there was a 3rd+ person)
"Two target" things cannot be the same thing, so indeed, the redirection cannot legally move the second targeting to the first target; it can't change the fact there are two targets, only what they are.
ShE Ruling - This says "in your army" does this include attachments? or only personalities? or personalities and followers? or what?
Any card in your army.
So spells included? and when it says elemental it only means the 5 rings or all the other stuff too like maho and jade and pearl?
Yep, Spells too. Only the big five are Element keywords.
Thank you
[ShE] Can Mishime Sensei reduce the cost on the action of Bound in Blood?
The wording seems to imply that it can't, but I feel like it should? I'm not super sure how to look that one up
The action cost is variable, and then the subsequent targeting is based on how much you actually paid. So, reducing the cost does nothing besides also lowering the amount of targets you can choose.
The way I read it it reduces the spell cost and like MacBeth2001 mentioned
Thanks.
[Ivory] - How many favor actions can I take if I have Regal Furisode and Doji Katata in play? https://oracleofthevoid.com/#game=l5r,#cardid=11263 https://oracleofthevoid.com/#game=l5r,#cardid=11160
3-5, depending on how many Katatas you have in play
You can use the Favor twice with the Furisode on the rulebook Favor actions (as well as lobby a second time), and each Katata gives you 1 more Battle action, rulebook or from a card in play
I don't understand the "two times per turn" thing. Is a SET? Can the active player decide the order in which those traits are resolved?
One of the rules experts can correct me if needed:
The furisode means you can use the rulebook Favor actions twice instead of just once. This means no matter how many furisode you have in play, it's still limited to twice.
Katata grants you an additional use of Favor Battle actions, making each, rulebook or in play, +1 times per turn. This means they stack on top of both the amount you can already do, as well as on top of each other.
Mathwise, it looks like this:
Without Furisode: 1+(X×1) where X is number of Katatas
With Furisode: 2+(X×1) where X is number of Katatas
Hida Kozan, Voice of the Empress is the only Ivory-legal card that has a Favor Battle action, otherwise all of the Favor Battle actions would have to be the rulebook one
As a side note, traits are ongoing passive effects, meaning they don't "resolve", they are either constantly active, or happen when triggered (again, I may be corrected if I'm wrong)
Do also bear in mind that each lobby is an Limited action, and each time you bow Katata to take the Favor is an action. Plus, if memory serves, the rulebook favor card cycle is a Limited action too. Realistically, you'll likely only be able to use the Favor 3 times as a result of this, 4 if you start your opponent's turn with the Favor or grab it as an open with My Lord's Favor
5 would only realistically be doable in a Lion deck with Akodo Dairuko exp2 and 3 Katatas, or any deck with Hida Kozan and 3 Katatas
Thanks for the answer.
I think I'm a bit confused about the order in which trait effects are resolved:
- If Furisode resolves first (and it sets the number), I get 2 Favor actions per turn, and then Katata gives me one more, for a total of 3 Favor actions.
- But if Katata resolves first, I get 1 additional Favor action (for a total of 2), and then Furisode has no effect.
As stated, traits like this don't resolve, they're permanently active. Favor actions are not repeatable, so usually, it's a maximum of 1 each. Furisode puts that maximum to 2 each. Katata gives you extra uses above the maximum.
In short, the first option
Are you able to play Open cards in battle in Ivory edition?
Ivory/20F edition I suppose
No. If an Open ability can also be used in Battle, as of Samurai Edition and forward, it will say both explicitly, as in "Battle/Open:".
ShE: Togashi Toa and Way of the Dragon: If I have WotD in play, is Toa's ability Battle/Engage?
No.
Thanks, is that because it is a trait that makes the ability battle/engage and WotD only counts as a ring for actions?
Correct!
Does the out of clan tax in ivory/20f/onyx/she permanently increase the unit gold cost?
If a Lion player recruits Moto Someone-or-another for 8+2g, is the Moto's cost when checked by another card 8 or 10?
check by another card is still 8
I only ask because Invest is permanent.
The difference is that you don't have to pay the invest

ShE: Higaru's "open" action is also apparently "void" because he has the void icon. But what if I copy his ability to Hikuryo using The Akasha exp? Is it then just an "open" ability or does this also copy the void keyword to Hikuryo's new ability? Would this mean that Hikuryo cannot use his new ability on a personality who has Ketsuen attached if the void icon is also copied?
In ShE Rules, abilities inherit all keywords of the card they are on. A copy of any such ability would also have all its keywords. So, no, some wearing Ketsuen could not be targeted by even a copy of Higaru's ability.
Great thanks!
