another question with searing touch of jigoku. OBH rules. the terrain action says to remove all traits from a terrain. but deadly ground specifically says that no actions may be taken unless the action destroys this terrain. im guessing i cant remove the traits

Answers on: Deadly Ground
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 February 2025 10:47 · in reply

Right. Only "destroy" in the literal, game-definition sense.

A player, 3 February 2025 16:41

Just out of curiosity. I'm wondering why the oracle wording on Aramasu's Vigilance is nerfed to not allow recruit actions (understandably bc that wasn't the original design) but on luxurious silk you let it ride. Silk is the most played holding in OBH bc of this. I love the holding but maybe should get the same treatment considering this also isn't intended to be used for recruit and all that.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 February 2025 16:44 · in reply

Yeah, I've been reluctant to make a similar fix since LS in its broken form is so ubiquitous.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 February 2025 16:46

Maybe one day when the Oracle is fully converted to 20F oriented wordings, rather than the partially 20F partially Emperor state it's in now.

saaam (not official), 3 February 2025 16:46

And that will be a sad day.

A player, 3 February 2025 16:50

Lols 1st turn 2 Masaya. Really broken for what it does if it can pay for recruiting.

A player, 4 February 2025 06:34

Does "Mempo of the Amethyst Champ" work with the stronghold "Hidden Catacombs of the Scorpion" ?

Can I bow my personality to pay the cost of discarding the favor and take the favor with the mempo?

A player, 4 February 2025 08:08

You still have the favor when you bow the personality as it substitutes for discarding the IF so the mempo reaction won't trigger.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2025 10:20 · in reply

Kakita's answer is more or less correct, but to fully clarify: You don't trigger the Mempo's Reaction if you substitute doing something else besides discarding the Favor. Kakita didn't understand that, as I suspect went unstated in your question, you never had the Favor in the first place and said you "still have" it, but either way, substituting discarding the Favor for a different effect means that the Mempo ability has no trigger.

This version of DG shouldnt be treated as MRP? And it says "destroy or discard" instead of only "destroy".

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2025 21:05 · in reply

I think the Deadly Ground and Hida Yakamo (Oni version) Samurai-era promos are not considered MRPs (and thus have never been marked as such in the Oracle) either because they weren't ever officially released, or if they were officially released, they were considered "just for fun" releases, being non-legal to the current environment, like the CE15 non-legal promos.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 4 February 2025 21:24

AFAIK they were part of "Legacy tournament kit". They were announced in Feb 2008 and i found that they were part of our local tourneys prizes in april and may 2008.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 4 February 2025 21:30

There was option to officially prepare so called "legacy event" and it was required to order at least two standard event kit to organize a legacy one and get those promos by flgs

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2025 21:32 · in reply

Well, it was certainly a conscious decision, probably by Reese at the time of the Oracle's inception, not to consider them MRPs, so I'm hesitant to rescind that. Even though it seems they did get an official release, the "CE15 reasoning" is not unsound, as well as considering that the far-more readily available printings of Deadly aren't worded like that.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 4 February 2025 21:33

i got impression that was a AEG try to study if there's need to support legacy format locally from OP side

kempy_nezumi (not official), 4 February 2025 21:34

and it probably failed as it wasnt continued

A player, 7 February 2025 22:02

What is the Rulebook consequence for loosing a duel in OBH ? Death or nothing ? In the 20F Comprehensive Rulebook i couldn't find anything about that...

A player, 7 February 2025 22:03 · in reply

Usually the action that you take for the duel tells you what happens.

A player, 7 February 2025 22:07

I was referring to this card https://oracleofthevoid.com/#game=l5r,#cardid=3548 . Now i see the wording in Oracle, that says the loser dies. On the card itself there wasn't this phrase. Ok thanks for clariyfing that for me.

A player, 7 February 2025 22:19

Just double checking, in OBH there is no blood money, right?

A player, 7 February 2025 22:21

No blood money rule in OBH.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 8 February 2025 07:07 · in reply

If card mrp was printed in edition where default result of loosing was death it is mentioned in oracle wording even if in 20f theres no such rule. In 20f every duel has effects in its text.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 8 February 2025 07:13 · in reply

Most cancels triggers "before events effect resolves" so no.

A player, 8 February 2025 18:26

so we are in battle and my opponent uses the battle action on "the inevitable grasp of conquest" my cards will not destroy his personalities at this battle. how does this effect interact with the Yu trait?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 8 February 2025 18:51 · in reply

Per a literal reading of the Yu Rules, it would seem pretty clear that the card with the "Yu" keyword is what is doing the destroying:

"If one or more cards with the Yu keyword are in a losing army during Battle Resolution, each may destroy an enemy Follower, or an enemy Personality without Followers, that has Force less than or equal to the losing card’s Yu value. Multiple cards may also combine their Yu values to destroy a single card, but one card may not split its Yu to destroy multiple cards."

Thus, the Celestial would indeed negate that effect.

A player, 8 February 2025 18:59

to be more clear it was the timing of when Yu triggers i was questioning. the celestial says this battle. i thought the timing was after battle resolution but i see now that it is not

A player, 8 February 2025 19:04

Is there any ruling in OBH that limits an event to resolving only once? i see older cards mention effects like "this event may resolve a second time this game" im assuming this phrase only existed in the time frame where events were unique to both players and could only resolve once. Just making sure as long as i shuffle an event into my deck by any means without this added line of text that it will still resolve.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 8 February 2025 19:07 · in reply

Yeah, I think that's a relic of the old "global limitation" on any/all players' Events resolving, and I'm 99% sure OBH did not reinstate that.

A player, 8 February 2025 21:17

Just to be clear: unique cards can be on each player's side simultaneously?

A player, 9 February 2025 08:24

Morning!. What happens when you have The Dark Path of Shadows and the opponent have a Ring of Earth in play? https://oracleofthevoid.com/#game=l5r,#cardid=8013 https://oracleofthevoid.com/#game=l5r,#cardid=6334 Sh bow units as they move and the ring negate movements, is an infinite loop.

A player, 9 February 2025 08:31

Ring of Earth negates this movement once, then is bowed. DPoS's action is repeatable, so on your next opportunity you can perform DPoS's action again (unless the opponent's action somehow grew their army beyond 9 Chi).

A player, 9 February 2025 08:33

If a (semi)permanent effect would negate units from moving from the battlefield (for example a terrain or a region). The movement would be negated, even though you could perform the action over and over...

What happens with Events when Norikazu Sensei is in play? They are discarded or they stay in Province until they may be discarded at the end of turn?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 27 February 2025 19:09 · in reply

I'm fairly sure they go away immediately. Yokuni Sensei was the "stick Events around" Sensei.

A player, 27 February 2025 19:09

I agree with Mac

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 27 February 2025 19:10

"Do not resolve" would effectively be read as "effects do not happen/are negated".

A player, 27 February 2025 19:10

Norikazu with the -1GP is a hard decision

saaam (not official), 27 February 2025 19:34

kempy_nezumi (not official), 27 February 2025 20:01 · in reply

So with Norikazu Sensei in play Ivory+ Events' abilities may be launched with help of Determination?

A player, 28 February 2025 02:51

Assuming OBH rules I'm reading Norikazu as: events do not resolve and as such stay in the province waiting to be resolved or discarded ('Amnesia' cast by at least 2 Shugenja would allow them to resolve during your next events phase).

Answers on: Amnesia
A player, 28 February 2025 02:51

Determination on the Action events seems to me like it would work.

A player, 28 February 2025 02:54

From 20F: Events in Provinces are discarded once an ability on them is used, unless the ability puts the Event itself into play.

A player, 28 February 2025 02:56

In as far as that's relevant...

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 02:56 · in reply

Discarding an Event is not contingent upon its effects successfully resolving. It would still discard if its effects were negated, which is effectively what Norikazu does.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 02:57

Talking about pre-Ivory Events, of course. Newer ones don't discard until their abilities are used, as you said.

A player, 28 February 2025 02:57

Norikazu stops them from beginning to resolve though. It doesn't cancel their effect

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 02:58 · in reply

That's not effectively different. If it does't resolve, it has no effect. It still gets discarded regardless.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:00

It is different imo, it's the same difference as would be I counter your spell or you can't cast your spell. In the first case the effect is triggered, but then negated/cancelled, in the second it is never triggered to begin with.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:01 · in reply

Actions work like that. Traits don't.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:03

You can prevent someone from having the option/ability to take a (Spell, in your example) action. You can negate/prevent a Spell's effects. You can't "stop a trait" before it starts; triggered traits are involuntary. It either happens or it doesn't.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:05

3) Events

a) Events with only a trait in its text box may only resolve during the Events Phase once it is revealed in a province. After an event resolves, it is discarded and the province it came from is refilled face-down.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:06

After it resolves, it is discarded. Norizaku says they can't resolve.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:07

If not, Norizaku's Oracle text should be altered to represent this by saying it cancels their effects.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:11

Ah. I see. The OBH Rule to workaround Ivory Event Rules is a bit unclear/misleading if you read it completely literally. But, the intent of that Rule is not that an old-style Event being discarded is contingent upon it resolving, just that discarding occurs after the point where it would resolve. If it doesn't for whatever reason (such as being negated), it's still discarded. "Resolve" does not have a different meaning than "its effects resolve". So, by your arguement, the OBH Rules would strictly prevent an Event being discarded for any number of reasons, including "Whispered Rumors" and the like, but that clearly isn't/shouldn't be the case.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:11

Likewise Norizaku wouldn't cancel other effects of events like 'Bushido' because it has a victory condition all of its effects are allowed to resolve. So it allows cards to be drawn as well.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:13 · in reply

No Whispered Rumors specifically says it Negates its effects as the event resolves

A player, 28 February 2025 03:13

Reaction: Before an Event resolves: Negate its effects.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:15

There is also a difference imo between resolving an event and resolving its effects. They are not the same thing.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:15 · in reply

Yes. I'm saying there is no functional difference between an Event "resolving" and "an Events effects resolving".

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:16 · in reply

No, that's not the case.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:16

Hence why 'Defenders of the Realm can cancel part of an event's effects from resolving.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:16

Reaction: Before an Event resolves that will destroy one of your Provinces: Negate all effects of the Event that would destroy any Provinces.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:17

You JUST used the word "resolving" to describe effects occurring. How can you say it doesn't mean the same thing? πŸ˜›

A player, 28 February 2025 03:17

Resolving an event means begin resolving its effects.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:18

so you can interact with the trigger or you can interact with the bullet...

A player, 28 February 2025 03:20

It is the same as cancel an action or cancel for example any movement caused by the action. (And yes actions and events work somewhat differently, but the language behind it should mean the same thing)

A player, 28 February 2025 03:20

If you cancel the action the attempt to move never occured to begin with.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:21

There's no difference any longer between canceling and negation. The distinctions were unclear and minute.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:21

Change cancel and negate in the above and it still says the same thing.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:22

It boils down to interact with the trigger or interact with the effect.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:23

Ok, but my point is, whether an Event resolves or not doesn't determine whether it's discarded or not. You're reading the the OBH Rule too stictly/literally. The "after it resolves" in the Rules is not meant to be triggered by resolving, it's just meant to state a point in time.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:24

Then the rules need to be modified. Because literally is the only way to read rules... otherwise they're more of a guideline :p

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:25

Well, I've conceded it's unclear, but again, if all effects are negated, nothing "resolved", so by a strict reading, any full negation of an Event would prevent its discarding, but we know that shouldn't be the case.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:30

As I'm seeing on Oracle Norizaku Sensei is like the only card that that refers to the event resolving and not declaring what happens to it. The other cases mostly say shuffle it back into deck.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:32

But with your reasoning of them being the same. Norizaku would stop Bushido from resolving it's card draw effect. And that is not how it reads at all. So wording should be adjusted somewhere to make that clear.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:33 · in reply

Yeah, I don't follow that logic? How does my arguement prevent some of Bushido but not all of it?

A player, 28 February 2025 03:34

Because then sensei would block all traits that don't create new victory conditions.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:35

Oh no, it's listed as a single trait. So bad example. But there is likely other cases where events have multiple traits.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:36 · in reply

Well, no, there aren't.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:37

And even if there were, my argument wouldn't say "some do resolve and some don't". If the Event creates a new VC, all of it resolves, not just the part of it that creates the new VC.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:39

I'm just saying there's no difference between "An Event [does/does not] resolve" and "An Event's triggered trait's(') effects [do/don't] resolve".

A player, 28 February 2025 03:42

Except there is. As is the case with Defenders of the Realm, which negates only the effects that destroy province rather than all or nothing.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:45

That doesn't prove a difference between my two equivalences. I'm saying "I ate the pie" is equivalent to "I ate all of the pie", and you're saying that "I ate some of the pie" proves they're different, but in the absence of further clarifying words/statements, "I ate the pie" and "I ate all of the pie" ARE equivalent, especially if all the pie is gone afterward.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:47

Except we are talking about a negative here and "I didn't eat the pie" and "I didn't eat all of the pie" are very different in meaning.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:49

A more accurate analogy to my equivalences would then be "I didn't eat the pie" and "I didn't eat any piece of the pie".

A player, 28 February 2025 03:50

But I'm not arguing that your reasoning on the game is wrong, only that some of the wording is wrong. And as such should be corrected to convey the meaning more clearly.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:50

Wrong or at the very least confusing

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 03:56

Well, as I said, I can concede the point that the OBH workaround Rule for old Events is unclear that it is not intended for the resolving (some or any) of the effects to be a trigger to discarding it afterward. Regardless, it is the case that if even if none of the Event's traits' effects occur (equivalent to its/their not "resolving"), it should still be discarded directly after they would have done.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:59

Maybe change Norizaku's wording to: cancel/negate the effects of events that don't create new victory conditions. That would solve the issue too.

A player, 28 February 2025 03:59

And make its wording in line with all other cards that have a similar effect

A player, 28 February 2025 04:00

Better yet: unless events create new victory conditions, cancel their effects.

A player, 28 February 2025 04:01

That would be the most clear I think

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 04:01

I mean, it could be made clearer/more uniform with other such effects, but that wouldn't really solve the issue of the OBH Rule. An Event that has had all its effects negated has also not technically "resolved" either.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 04:01

There's no such thing as "cancel" anymore.

A player, 28 February 2025 04:02

So an event that has it's effects negated can resolve a second time?

A player, 28 February 2025 04:02

Because there's cards that specifically do that.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 04:08

Well any Event can resolve any number of times as long as it gets shuffled back in and pops up again. Or are you talking about old "one Event per game Rules" that don't exist anymore?

A player, 28 February 2025 04:10

Well if it gets shuffled in it resets nowadays. But what if it were put into a province from the discard pile (don't know from the top of my head if there is a card that does that)?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 04:11

Then it would resolve at the start of your turn, if it's there, yep.

A player, 28 February 2025 04:12

ok

A player, 28 February 2025 04:13

Still think the sensei would best be adjusted to match similar cards though... And if cancel doesn't exist anymore, any references to it should also be changed to negate or resolve as appropriate imo

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 28 February 2025 04:14

The word "cancel" is not present in any Oracle text.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 28 February 2025 09:42

Norikazu should work same way as when he was legal. So Event should be discarded without effect. Question is about Ivory Events, if it could be legal to announce ability to discard Event without any effect.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 28 February 2025 09:49

Anyway Kwek confirmed there will be update in Events section of OBH and it will include also some stuff from EE CR where is written that Event is discarded even if its effects are prevented.

I am posting this from old phone so i dont know its readable. If.not you may check EE CR its somewhere in Dropbox i think.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 28 February 2025 09:55

Anyway i got info that as 20F is a start if something is absent or unclear there we should follow EE CR for more answers. Its OBH guideline.

It seems he rarely uses Discord, i always catch him on Facebook.
