I have a question! The new Naga, Anahita, has a response to give you gold when an action recruits a nonhuman. The way the Kitsune cards are now worded, they use a response to create and recruit their spirit tokens. As you cannot do a response to a response, do these cards not interact? Or does the response on Kitsune personalities add on to the action in question so you could get the gold?

Answers on: Anahita, Kitsune
Jeff Williamson (rules official), 2 April 2024 16:06

the Response is the action which Recruits the Spirit, so you are correct that it cannot be Responded to

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 2 April 2024 16:06

more commonly you would use it when Recruiting a Naga Personality as a Dynasty action

A player, 2 April 2024 17:30

Ya. Still has a place in the deck, just a little less perfect than I thought.

A player, 4 April 2024 02:17

Question. When an action has two clauses in it, seperated by a full stop/period, and the second effect is not reliant on the first clause resolving successfully, can you use the action if the first clause does not have a valid target?

Ex- Asako Kensaku. Can you get the 1 honor for not assigning if you don't have a Temple?

saaam (not official), 4 April 2024 02:23

Hm. Not in the Oracle. What's the printed wording?

A player, 4 April 2024 02:24

I cant seem to add a picture

A player, 4 April 2024 02:25

"Air Open, Bow: Give your target Temple Holding +1GP. Before the turn ends, gain 1 Honor if you assigned no Personalities to battlefields during it."

saaam (not official), 4 April 2024 02:27

If you have no Temples in play to target, I would argue that you can't take the action because it would be in bad faith.

saaam (not official), 4 April 2024 02:27

I dunno how people have wrecked the rules for the more recent arcs, though. That may be perfectly legal.

A player, 4 April 2024 02:27

thats the question at heart. the second effect is in good faith, the first is not.

saaam (not official), 4 April 2024 02:28

Well, it is genuinely interesting. Because... what if you reversed the order of the printed sentences? Then I'd argue that it's fine, as there no logical "and" between the two effects/sentences.

A player, 4 April 2024 03:26

It wasn't hyper relevant for the game we just played, but its still something we need to ask because that can really hurt if luck just really screws a deck over

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 April 2024 03:49 · in reply

As saaam asserted, the targeting is required, so you can't take the action without a Temple to target.

A player, 4 April 2024 03:51

That's how we played it. But yeah. Rng can really hurt.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 April 2024 03:51

Saaam's not correct about reversing the sentence order, though. All targeting of an action is required unless it is explicitly optional or delayed.

saaam (not official), 4 April 2024 04:06

Cool, good to know!

A player, 6 April 2024 17:37

couple questions from a big deck game last night: If Otaku is bowed by an action, can she use her react to bow another opposing card?

Answers on: Otaku
A player, 6 April 2024 17:38

Similarly: If my opponent destroys an attachment with Otaku, do I have to destroy an attachment? Or can I destroy a card? (it reads like if they destroy any card I can destroy any card? But that seems weirdly powerful.)

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 6 April 2024 17:39 · in reply

No. You can't take actions on bowed cards.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 6 April 2024 17:40 · in reply

No, you don't have to destroy an attachment; any enemy card.

A player, 6 April 2024 17:41 · in reply

alright. I played this wrong for sure. We weren't entirely certain, because Otaku was the one being bowed. I guess it makes sense though, because the react is after. At which point she can't perform the action.

A player, 7 April 2024 02:14

did fear always affect personalities without followers? or was that later?

saaam (not official), 7 April 2024 02:29

Later, IIRC.

saaam (not official), 7 April 2024 02:29

Fear was pretty useless for a while.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 7 April 2024 03:53 · in reply

Old Fear used to bow every Follower equal to its power or under in the unit, but never affected Personalities (unless combo'd with another card like "The Face of Fear"). Also, all Undead were immune to Fear per the Rulebook, and all Naga were immune from each of their Strongholds.

saaam (not official), 7 April 2024 03:56

"Behold, I have Fear everywhere!" "And I only have Personalities." "...oh."

saaam (not official), 7 April 2024 03:58

YJA ran Followers and were immune to Fear. Naga ran Followers... and were also immune to Fear.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 7 April 2024 03:58

I rather liked Fear's old "flavor", that it was essentially the Fear of death, and so it only affected little guys (Followers), not big strong Personalties (and, as I edited in above, it didn't affect you if you were already dead or had a rebirth thing built into your very snakey existence).

saaam (not official), 7 April 2024 04:00

I fully agree, as a flavour thing... it was good, and situationally useful.

saaam (not official), 7 April 2024 04:00

Or you didn't think anything of it and via another card effect it all of a sudden bowed your Personality(ies), and swung the battle, in a very "real life" kind of thing where a leader would turn into a coward in a battle.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 7 April 2024 04:02

Haha. Yeah, "The Face of Fear"; it's one thing to not fear those Skeletal Archers way over there, it's another thing to have it RIGHT IN YO FACE! ๐Ÿ˜„

saaam (not official), 7 April 2024 04:05

I find that the OG game had a lot of... storytelling in the game play, in that so many behaviours and effects made sense mapping to real world behaviours. Even if you count some Shugenja shenaningans. But more like the phases of the game representing the seasons, so Events Phase -> Spring, Limited -> Summer, Battle -> Autumn, Dynasty -> Winter.

A player, 7 April 2024 10:14

Guys, let's say I declare a Range 2 Attack and target a personality with force of 4. My opponent doesn't do anything, then I interrupt the range attack with a strategy to increase its force by 2. The opponent can now interrupt again to decrease the force or to use something to negate the action? If he can, let's say he decreases the force by 2. Can I interrupt again to increase the force again?

A player, 7 April 2024 11:12

Yes and yes. Any amount of interrupts can be taken to an action, as long as you alternate, during the interrupt window

A player, 7 April 2024 11:22 · in reply

A player, 8 April 2024 15:42

are PS modifiers from fortifications bonuses? and what about PS modifiers from terains? Thanks for your help.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 8 April 2024 15:49

You mean passive traits like "This Province has +X strength?". So yes, it's a bonus.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 8 April 2024 15:50

Also as example this Terrain also provides bonus.

A player, 8 April 2024 15:51

so modifiers only come from Items, yes?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 8 April 2024 15:52

No. Senseis also have modifiers to Province Strength.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 8 April 2024 15:52

-/+ PS on Sensei is a Modifier, not bonus or penalty

A player, 8 April 2024 15:52

got it, thanks!

A player, 10 April 2024 08:19

Question. Does the "Your stronghold has no abilities" text from Senseis remove stuff like "Your Lion Clan personalities have +1F while attacking"? Or only the actions?

A player, 10 April 2024 08:24

Only the actions, passive effects on cards are generally called "traits" and are not affected by things that consider "abilities"

A player, 10 April 2024 08:32

So, the +1F to Lion Clan personalities stays. Same goes for traits on other card types (Clash of Blades for example would remove an ability on a personality, but not their traits)

A player, 10 April 2024 08:38

Cool, thanks

A player, 10 April 2024 14:13

How does Kachiko thunder, who lets you win via honor victory, interact with cards that force you to give up the ability to win via honor

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 April 2024 14:25 · in reply

If I recall correctly, and I don't have the CR handy, it's like a switch turning on and off. The last change to can/can't takes precedence. Like "who goes first" in Battles.

A player, 10 April 2024 14:26

so if kachiko comes out second, she takes precedence

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 April 2024 14:27 · in reply

I'm fairly certain that's correct, both contemporary to her and under current Rules. If two continuous effects contradict, the most recent one applied is the one in effect.

Question: Equipping a spell would be considerer an "action" capable of triggering the reaction of this holding?

A player, 13 April 2024 12:56

Another question: Is there a way in Sun and Moon to set the attack phase like it was back in Emperor? I mean: assigning infantry then cavalry, instead of assigning attackers and defenders

A player, 13 April 2024 13:06

If I recall correctly, in Emperor, Equipping was not yet considered an action by itself, so no. It is however an action in Legacy and would apply there

As for your second question, no, although you could simply use the Assign Attackers phase for Infantry and the Assign Defenders phase for Cavalry (the application doesn't actively monitor that anyway, you could even theoretically never click the Sun icon to pass the turn and play a full game)

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 April 2024 13:27

In Emperor while attaching you was paying for attachment not for action. Starting with Ivory Equip's costs is a cost of attachment. Thats why LS was mediocre Holding in Emperor while in Legacy that is based on Ivory (Modern or Obsidian Hand) its really powerful card.

A player, 13 April 2024 13:33

Thanks!!!

Answers on: Silver Mine
A player, 13 April 2024 13:34

Yup, LS in Emperor is a bad choice

A player, 13 April 2024 13:35

Now, two scenarios for this one: 1) I am paying for a spells that costs 4 gold... i use that holding and it produce 4 gold, right? 2) I am paying for a spell that costs 7 gold, can I use that holding (assuming it would produce 4 gold) along with silver mine for the remaining 3 gold?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 April 2024 13:35 · in reply

Not bad, per se, if you have actions that cost Gold themselves. Just not an auto-include. ๐Ÿ˜›

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 April 2024 13:36

A player, 13 April 2024 13:36 · in reply

Deliberations, could be a nice option for a combo, but most of my strategies in emperor don't require gold...

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 April 2024 13:36

It produces 4 for attachments, not 5.

A player, 13 April 2024 13:36 · in reply

Yup. 4, not 5, my mistake

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 April 2024 13:37

So, in your examples, if the Spells cost 4 and 7, yes. I don't see why you'd doubt.

A player, 13 April 2024 13:37

Yup, fixed

A player, 13 April 2024 13:39 · in reply

I assumed that was the case, but the last part of the text made me think for a brief moment that perhaps that holding should be used alone

A player, 13 April 2024 13:42

At first I couldn't think of a scenario where you could pay for more than one attachment with a single holding in Emperor, but then I realized that that holding is also legal in Onyx... however, in the ened I wanted to double-check

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 April 2024 13:45 · in reply

Ah, you showed the Onyx image. It's functionally mostly the same, but the EE version has two separate traits, the second of which reduces the attachment cost by 4, so it functions a little differently. Like, if you have something on it that increases the Holding's overall GP in EE, it won't interact with the 4 GC reduction for attachments.

A player, 14 April 2024 21:13
[attachment: image.png]
A player, 14 April 2024 21:14

What happens if you make the personality, then blank the text and unbow it?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 April 2024 21:15 · in reply

The ongoing effect is still present. Removing the text that started it doesn't undo it.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 April 2024 21:16

So, blank or not, when the Holding unbows, the Personality is gone.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 April 2024 21:19 · in reply

Actions with a Favor cost are inherently Favor. Printing the keyword would just be redundant.

A player, 14 April 2024 21:21

If it's before the colon (the ":" for the non-native-English speakers), it's a Favor action. If it's after (Such as one of the two options for the action on Otomo Suikihime - exp 2), it's not a Favor action

Answers on: Otomo Suikihime
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 April 2024 21:25

(Also, if the text before the colon is "X or [Favor]", it's only a Favor action if you pay that cost. If you pay the other alternate cost, it's not.)

A player, 14 April 2024 21:26

Or the Response granted to your opponent by the use of Imperial Assessor's Battle action (Response: Pay 4GC or discard Favor to straigthen the target bowed by this action). This is also not a Favor action even if your opponent discards the Favor for the Response)

A player, 15 April 2024 00:43

My brain isnt working right now... with this card, it has the top, telling you to target an opposing dishonored personality... and then there is the bottom that says choose a player... if there isn't a target that is viable for the top portion, this can't be played, right?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 April 2024 00:52 · in reply

Yeah, just ignore italicized color-text. All targets of an action are required to take it in the first place, unless they say "you may" or are delayed.

If I destroy Koutetsu as an Open, can I use his Interrupt, or does it have to be as a Battle action (with all the location-based restrictions it implies)?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 16 April 2024 19:09

IMHO you may use Interrupt to Open action that destroys him, but then you can't announce additional granted ability for Melee as Melee itself requires targeting card in army.

"Target a Follower or a Personality without Followers in the current enemy army. If its Force is equal to or less than X, destroy it.โ€

A player, 16 April 2024 19:26

got it, wasn't entirely sure, but now I see the bit about "army", and you can't have an army without a battle

A player, 17 April 2024 08:23

if you kill the berserker/personality that this targeted to activate it, does the effect still remain in play?

A player, 17 April 2024 08:25

for example, opponent uses shout on Zaiberu and targets tsukimi, i somehow kill zaiberu. does the shout still affect tsukimi

A player, 17 April 2024 08:41

I'm still new so take this with a pinch of salt but my read on this is that the first part is cost to play it, not attaching it to the unit.

So the effect would still be in play.

Someone correct me if I am wrong though!

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 17 April 2024 10:10 · in reply

Yes. Maskerade was mostly right; while not technically a "cost", the targeting of your guy is just a requirement of taking the action. The ongoing effect remaining active is not dependent upon them remaining in play, or it would explicitly say so.

A player, 18 April 2024 17:25

i'd also say it's a mild case of "reading the card explains the card". Usually Interrupts have conditions to play them (for instance, reducing an RA by 2 requires an RA), but if they don't, you can play them whenever you want during any Interrupt step

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 18 April 2024 17:27 · in reply

I mean, you could still play an Interrupt that says "Give one of the action's RAs -2 str" to an action without an RA. It just wouldn't do anything.

A player, 18 April 2024 17:28

Technically, yes, but since it wouldn't do anything, the action having an RA is an implied condition. You could call it a logical condition instead of a legal condition

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 17:29 · in reply

this was a question about Interrupt that could be played at any moment, but could make useless result if played as interrupt to Open ability

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 18 April 2024 17:33 · in reply

Yeah, I'd hesitate to call it a condition. That's an actual game term meaning whether you can or can't do something, not just if you "probably shouldn't". ๐Ÿ˜›

Is there a possibility to write this findings, explanation on how a certain card works or interaction with 2 cards, somewhere down for everyone to look them up, e.g., at oracleofthevoid or in another kind of database where you can look it up by searching the card ? Or is it enough for you to consider this channel the "database" to look it up ? I know from Star Trek CCG 1E where they have a "Rules Resources" attachment called "Dilemma Resolution Guide" where it is explained how every Dilemma card works. That's the idea behind my question. So far, I write everything down for myself that i encounter here but i thing especially for new player having such a summary of FaQ on cards would be very helpful.

In the past we had such files. Some of them are in Dropbox/Various folder. Then they were replaced by AEG forum where Rules Junta guys like @Brook Cunningham or @Alex Jones were answering. Part of this forum is also in DropBox. Then AEG sold game and forum was first blocked then removed. Nowadays nobody is collecting such rulings for Onyx but they are searchable eg in this subchannel.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:02

Also some answer may vary depends on format. Same card may work differently in some old edition environment, current Onyx or in any Legacy format.

A player, 18 April 2024 20:37

I have a doubt... In Onyx you assign attackers and defenders instead of Infantry and Cavalry, right? Now, If I declare and attack and all my units are Cavalry... do I have to assign attackers? Or I can just target one or more provinces without assigning any unit to then use the cavalry engage afterward...

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:40

Cavalry is: Absent Engage: Target your unbowed Personality in a Cavalry unit at any location. Move it to the current battlefield.

During Attack Phase battles start at every Province in order made by attacker.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:40

At any battle during Engage Segment you may anounce Cavalry Engage (but only once per turn) and move ONE of your Cavalry unit from anywhere there.

A player, 18 April 2024 20:44

I still don't get it... let's say no attackers were assigned and no defenders were assigned... what happens then? No province has been targeted so there are no battlefields to resolve, right? Or the attacker can still target any battlefield to resolve a battle there?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:44

There's no such thing like "targeting battlefield"

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:45

When you announce Attack Phase (that is optional), you must choose a province and battle start there. Then another and another.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:45

Even if you didnt assign anyone.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 18 April 2024 20:46 · in reply

Declaring an attack creates battlefields at all the Defender's Provinces no matter what.

A player, 18 April 2024 20:47

Ahhh ok, that clarifies my doubt.. so you don't need to assign anybody and then you just have to chose a battlefield to resolve and then use the cavalry engage, right?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:47

Yes

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:49

Also you may even assign Cavalry Unit 1 at Province A, but start a battle at Province D first and then move your Unit 1 there during Engage Segment.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:50

As every batle has its own Engage Segment.

A player, 18 April 2024 20:50

Now, a follow-up question... let's say you attempt to use the cavalry engage and it is negated with meditating mind... you can still try to use the cavalry engage to assign another unit in that battlefield?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:50

No

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:50

Cavalry Engage is rulebook OPT (once per turn) ability.

A player, 18 April 2024 20:51

I see. So you can only assign one unit per battlefield per turn with the engage ability??

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:51

No. One unit PER TURN.

A player, 18 April 2024 20:51

What??

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:52

And it's not "assign", it's movement. So any action that negates movement may also stop it.

A player, 18 April 2024 20:53

Ok, sorry, but I need to double check this: let's say I have 5 cavalry units... I didn't assign attackers... I choose a province, I use my cavalry engage and move 1 unit there... the other 4 units cannot move in that turn? Assuming you don't have other ways (strategies, etc) to move them

kempy_nezumi (not official), 18 April 2024 20:54

I believe it was added to the online Comprehensive Rules. They didn't add cards for 3 sets that did nothing. Check Kempy's Google Drive link pinned in the completed Emperor simulation tournament channel; I bet it's there.

As long as you, the person who played the Terrain, don't control a Cavalry unit there, yes, any action taken Absently is negated; though, not to say an action with the Absent keyword would be negated if its player actually has someone at the Terrain's battlefield, if you follow me?

Again, I'm almost sure you don't ignore like ~15 different cards spanning 3 sets (search Oracle for Text: Engage, Legality: Emperor, and you'll see several that use it exclusively). A player, 20 April 2024 22:20

Jim was talking that Kisada's Funeral reducing actions, and Shinsei's Heart during actions is counting as a ring, But if You say so it will count as a Ring only for actions that call for a Rings

A player, 20 April 2024 22:21

or uses/counts Rings

A player, 20 April 2024 22:24

There is a similar interaction here with Shinsei's Heart and Shiba Hiroyuki- if it isn't a Ring duriung the action, then Hiroyuki does not get the +1 (assuming you gave the temple an Element).

The issue I have is that if that is not how the holding works, then its practically useless

A player, 20 April 2024 22:27

It's a Ring for actions, meaning actions that count, target, bow or straighten a Ring can use this holding. Kisada's Funeral checks Ring presence as part of its trait, therefore not as an action

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 20 April 2024 22:27 · in reply

It says "for" actions, not during them. The Ring is checked by the funerals continuous effect, not the action itself.

A player, 20 April 2024 22:29

It works for example for this lil guy

A player, 20 April 2024 22:30

I fail to see the distinction.

Lets take Wheels within Wheels as our example action here- when this action is played Kisada's funeral checks to see if I have a Ring. During this check, because an action is being played, the Temple should count as a Ring.

this should be mechanically be because if it does not gain the Ring keyword during actions, then it makes all of the actions that say target a Ring work very oddly with it because technically it doesn't have the Ring keyword and thus fail the Good Faith targeting rule

A player, 20 April 2024 22:31

but common sense says that they still target it.

A player, 20 April 2024 22:32

the issue I have is that you have decided that Hiroyuki, who checks for rings, does not get the +1 for this temple, thus it works for some but not all

A player, 20 April 2024 22:38

It does work for all actions that look at Rings, counting, targeting, bowing or straightening.

The penalty applied by Kisada's Funeral is not caused by an action, its caused by the trait.

Therefore, since it's not an action checking for Rings, Shinsei's Heart is not a Ring

A player, 20 April 2024 22:40

I get the ruling. It still feels arbitrary. It also means that Honor decks still have very little they can do about Kisada's Funeral.

A player, 20 April 2024 22:40

Phoneposting, so can't see Hiroyuki's card. That being said, if the +1 is from his trait, then it does not check for rings as an action, therefore is consistent with the ruling on Kisada's Funeral

Answers on: Kisada's Funeral
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 20 April 2024 22:41

Yeah, I'm sorry you feel it's confusing or arbitrary, but it pretty much boils down to "does the text within the action itself say Ring"? If yes, the Holding counts as one. Otherwise, no.

the core difference is Hiroyuki check specifically as part of an action but Kisada's funeral does not. the trait effectively checks, do you have a ring? is this a non battle action yes, then -1 honor from the action if it gives you honor. the Trait does not add into the action but instead checks those two boxes and then if the criteria are met then it triggers otherwise it does nothing.

at least that is my logic behind it

A player, 20 April 2024 22:42

It's not arbitrary at all. Reading the card explains the card. It counts as a ring for actions. Traits are not actions

A player, 20 April 2024 22:42

TBH i'm probably up in arms about this because Honor feels like its holding on by a thread right now.

A player, 20 April 2024 22:43

and this was one of my core defenses against a card that will just shut my deck down

A player, 20 April 2024 22:43

A player, 20 April 2024 22:43

agreed

A player, 20 April 2024 22:45

Seeing Hiroyuki now, that counts as an action that checks for Rings, therefore it would include Shinsei's Heart (if you did not use its Open previously, though, it doesn't have an element keyword, which then adds 0 to the count, since Hiroyuki checks element keywords)

A player, 20 April 2024 22:45 · in reply

This is not a helpful argument, becuase my understanding was that the trait causes the actions to look for Rings. While this is incorrect, it is an example of how two people can read something differently, and why the disagreement came about in the first place

A player, 20 April 2024 22:47

Thats also why im accepting the ruling, but putting my own 2 cents in

A player, 20 April 2024 22:50

Keep in mind that traits work different in comparison with Open/Limited/Battle/Engage actions... that's why, for example, if as a result of a duel you negate a personality's abilities, that cannot nagate the trait of that personality

A player, 20 April 2024 22:52 · in reply

different people use different methods, but they amount to basically the same as you do, either copy the card that creates the new card, or create a blank card, title it appropriately, and either way use the circles one way or the other

kempy_nezumi (not official), 22 April 2024 19:19 · in reply

For AEG era cardpool/formats you may add such lines to your deck (manually in text editor). So when game starts you will have such proxies next to your fate deck (as face down cards).

Proxy Personality: Beiko's Bear Proxy Personality: Denhei's Snake Proxy Personality: Gina's Fox

List of available proxies are in Oracle of the Void, but not all of them works, especially if they have same or really similiar names to normal cards.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 23 April 2024 18:14 · in reply

Yaheiko doesn't care if the action ever targets the Berserker, only if it will affect him. So yes, Yaheiko could negate Overwhelmed's destruction effect.

Very unclear on the Rehonoring rules.

There are a number of ways to rehonor dishonorable Personalities.

0.1. Before a player gains one or more points of Honor from an action or trait that targeted or came from one or more of his or her dishonorable Personalities. If rehonoring the Personalities is not one of that action or traitโ€™s effects, the dishonorable Personalitiesโ€™ rehonoring is substituted for the Honor gain. 0.2. Before a player gains Honor from attaching a card to one of his or her dishonorable Personalities, the Personalityโ€™s rehonoring is substituted for the Honor gain. 0.3. Before a player with one or more dishonorable Personalities in his or her army gains Honor from destroying enemy cards in battle resolution, all such dishonorable Personalities are rehonored, substituting for the Honor gain. In a tied battle, all dishonorable Personalities in an army are rehonored before being destroyed, in substitution for their armyโ€™s leaderโ€™s Honor gain.

I guess what I'm not understanding is where it says "rehonoring is substituted for the Honor gain" but shouldn't it be worded the opposite way? Where honor gains are substituted for rehonoring? The main gist of the rule is that "when this Personality gains me honor, instead of that I'll rehonor them", or am I misunderstanding?

I'm not sure there's a hard grammatical rule if you say "substitute X for Y", whether it means that you are taking way one and replacing it with the other, but if there is, I have mostly heard it as "substitute X for Y" meaning the Y is going away and you're getting X instead, as it appears in the Rules text. Does that help?

A player, 27 April 2024 07:09

I dont understand the wording on that card correctly. Why should i ever invest 1 when i get the same benefit for investing 0? Thats how i read the card. You always get the same benefit as long as there are Sincerity tokens on the card. So what is the advantage of investing 1 vs. 0?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 27 April 2024 07:24 · in reply

To gain Sincerity token you must leave this card in Province for a turn.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 27 April 2024 07:27

So you pay Invest to gain a pernament benefit this turn. Or you leave it in Province and Recruit this Holding turn later for base cost only to gain benefit.

A player, 27 April 2024 08:50 · in reply

I do not know what our Lion friend is ploting, but it may be relevant to some cards that target gold cost.. maybe. so there [again maybe] is a reason to overpay even if You have a sincerity token and a possibility to pay "0". I can see such possibilities in times when You will not have a target to spend that one gold pending in Your gold pool, but the reason why would he increase its GC on purpose eludes me.

A player, 27 April 2024 10:03

Maybe i missunderstand invest on holdings vs. strategie cards? I thought you pay the invest cost in both cases when you play the card. So in this case you need 3 turns to get the full benefit of the card ? Holding is revealed in province. First round sincerity token is added. Second round invest of 1 is payed to permanently modify the card. Third round holding is played for 2 gold cost. Am i right this way ?

A player, 27 April 2024 10:21

No. If the holding flips turn 1, you can buy it for 2, then pay the invest cost of 1 (raising the gold price permanently to 3) for the invest effect, OR buy it for 2 and not get the invest effect, OR let it sit there, give it a Sincerity token at the end of your turn, then on turn 2, buy it for 2 with an invest cost of 0 to get the invest effect

A player, 27 April 2024 10:23

So yes, you're correct in that you pay the invest cost when you play the card, you're incorrect on your interpretation of this specific card

A player, 27 April 2024 10:38

Ok. Thanks for this clarification. Now i understand it and it makes sense to me. OR is the main delimiter for the first sentence. So invest 1 OR invest 0 if... I always read it as invest 1 or invest 0 IF ... And so i came up with a different interpretation of the whole meaning ๐Ÿ˜€.
