A player, 1 October 2023 23:05

is it intentional that Cross Blades can target any of your own Personalities, including bowed ones? Especially since the effect of the duel is bowing the loser

kempy_nezumi (not official), 2 October 2023 04:25

With this wording its legal to challenge with bowed guy. Its really strong and rarely seen effect on duel card.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 2 October 2023 08:59

And this one has solid FV and Discipline. So i assume its just staple card for any dueling.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 2 October 2023 09:00

And as its Repeatable you may play it same turn twice. And even you got additional Honor if you do this.

A player, 2 October 2023 10:25

yeah, thinking about it, it's as though made for either having 1 duelist duel 2 targets from 1 card, or the same target twice from the same card, including if you lost the first time

kempy_nezumi (not official), 3 October 2023 06:01

Modern.

Does Kyuden Kyotei trait allow to search for Market holding as for Legacy holding for second player?

I am asking becauae of starting procedure. Stronghold is revealed at A, starting Legacy rule kicks at B, but "real game" starts at F.

A player, 3 October 2023 06:18

It's been a while since I played Samurai. I'm guessing if you were allowed to get a Market holding by Legacy for not going first back then, then it should be the same case in Modern?

A player, 3 October 2023 06:21

So is the issue when do we consider the Stronghold trait active? As soon as Strongholds are revealed or only when the game actually begins?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 3 October 2023 06:31 · in reply

Yes, here's a main reason behind my question.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 3 October 2023 06:34

I am 99% sure it's legal to start with any Market as Legacy Holding in case of Kyuden Kyotei being second player.

A player, 3 October 2023 06:43

Considering the Dragon Strongholds that start with a Ring in play, looks like traits would be in effect as soon as Strongholds are revealed.

Alex Jones (rules official), 3 October 2023 07:20

The Strongholds are in play from Step A.

A player, 3 October 2023 09:15

question: is Doji's ability once per battle meaning I can only have her target one unit only or different units but only once?

A player, 3 October 2023 09:15

"Once per unit per battle"

Alex Jones (rules official), 3 October 2023 09:16

Per tuppence per person per trip.

A player, 3 October 2023 09:21

Sorry. I didn't get the answer

A player, 3 October 2023 09:23

different units but only once each, so if the opponent uses straightening movement tech to bring them back in, you can't use Doji on them again

Answers on: Doji
Alex Jones (rules official), 3 October 2023 09:32

Is English not your first language?

Alex Jones (rules official), 3 October 2023 09:34

If it is, then I don't understand how the wording is confusing. If not, then I'm a lot more sympathetic 🙂

A player, 3 October 2023 09:56

No. English is not my mother tongue.

A player, 3 October 2023 10:20

To be fair English is mine, and I have the same question. Would a modern printing of this ability read "repeatable battle: target a unit that has not been targeted with this ability. Move it Home bowed." ?

A player, 3 October 2023 10:20 · in reply

I don't know that tuppence means

A player, 3 October 2023 10:21

It's a small payment. At this point effectively it's British slang

A player, 3 October 2023 10:21

how is it related to the ability?

A player, 3 October 2023 10:22

He was making a joke on the ability that doesn't translate well

A player, 3 October 2023 10:22

Oh. okay. I misunderstood.

A player, 3 October 2023 10:27

used to mean two pence, an archaic plural of pennies, the joke is a reference to an old comedy monologue that I admittedly hadn't heard before myself

A player, 3 October 2023 10:29

I think I knew that at some point but it's been ages since I've had to use that knowledge.

A player, 3 October 2023 10:29 · in reply

Hopefully this is both correct, though, and answers Kakita's question

A player, 3 October 2023 10:39 · in reply

this is how I would interpret the ability as-printed, too

A player, 3 October 2023 10:39

Enough Talk! Let's play!

A player, 3 October 2023 10:42

would if I could but I can't so I won't

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 October 2023 11:02 · in reply

No, that rewording wouldn't be accurate. The restrictions, or rather permissions, are read in order, "Once per target" allowing you to do it once for every different target and then "per Battle" allowing you to target each of those targets once at each Battle; meaning should they happen to move to different Battlefields, you can target them again if it's during a different Battle. Also, under very modern Rules, the ability should have "Remote". She can do it from Home or another Battlefield, because she was printed during Lotus and the Rule of Location wasn't adopted until Samurai.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 October 2023 11:07

(I'll add Remote to the Oracle text right now, but there's technically nothing wrong with the "Once per target per battle" text, though I apologize that it's difficult to parse).

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 October 2023 11:10

If it were worded closer to a player 's attempt, Jim should've made it, "Remote Repeatable Battle: Target an attacking Personality this ability has not targeted this Battle. Move them home; bow their unit as it moves."

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 October 2023 11:12

, see above, and I might just go with that for the Oracle since there's some ESL (and EFL) confusion over "once per target per battle", but it's not technically wrong that way.

A player, 3 October 2023 11:20

Interesting. I didn't know that about the rule of Location

A player, 3 October 2023 11:22

I dont think anyone was saying it was wrong, just that we were having trouble parsing it. Between ESL and not playing in that era

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 October 2023 11:27

Oh sure. I just wanted to clarify that I wasn't changing it due to any inherent problems with its initial wording.

A player, 3 October 2023 11:28

I will say though that while the modern version is longer, I think it's a healthier template for explaining abilities

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 October 2023 11:29

Yeah, it's nice not to be limited by physical space on the card. 😛

A player, 3 October 2023 11:30

Lol

A player, 3 October 2023 11:30

Gotta get that YuGiOh font size!

Alex Jones (rules official), 3 October 2023 11:36

Sorry, got distracted

Alex Jones (rules official), 3 October 2023 11:37

"Per tuppence per person per trip" is a line from a Stanley Holloway comic song/poem, "The Runcorn Ferry".

Alex Jones (rules official), 3 October 2023 11:38

The cost of the ferry is 2 pence, per person, per trip.

Alex Jones (rules official), 3 October 2023 11:38

That is, for each trip, you have to pay 2p for each person who wants to cross.

A player, 3 October 2023 23:30

Does sending home with the imperial favor bow the unit or just send it home as is?

saaam (not official), 3 October 2023 23:31

Depends on the arc and ruleset.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 October 2023 23:33

Just home; no bowing.

A player, 3 October 2023 23:33

cool thanks

saaam (not official), 3 October 2023 23:42

I'm so sad that in modern arcs you can no longer Favour Home a Defending Unit. That used to be hot.

saaam (not official), 3 October 2023 23:42

And it'd bow them, to boot!

A player, 3 October 2023 23:43

Yeah, talk about nerfing the best way to ruin a friendship

saaam (not official), 3 October 2023 23:44

Or being able to Lobby even if you had less Honour, but could make up the difference by bowing a couple of high-PH Personalities, maybe discard a Fate card as a gift, and stealing the Favor away...

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 3 October 2023 23:47 · in reply

I put Classic Lobbying Optional Rule in the Legacy Rules. 🙂 That was a fun one to come up with a wording for an action. 😛

saaam (not official), 3 October 2023 23:48

Nice!

saaam (not official), 3 October 2023 23:48

I get that its awkward, but once in a while made for really entertaining and engaging gameplay.

saaam (not official), 4 October 2023 04:40

So Oni no Chi reads like so in the Oracle: "This oni is brought into play as a Limited Ritual action. Bow and destroy any number of your shugenja to bring this Oni into play. The Oni has a Force equal to half of the total chi of the participating shugenja and a Chi equal to the number of participating shugenja. This Personality may not be brought into play during your dynasty phase. Lose Honor equal to the Oni's Chi."

saaam (not official), 4 October 2023 04:40

Does that mean that it has fractional Force?

saaam (not official), 4 October 2023 04:40

Or, rather, can have fractional Force?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 October 2023 10:40 · in reply

I always meant to see if I could find contemporary rulings about this (whether rounded up or down or what) and adjust the Oracle accordingly. @kempy_nezumi , is Oni no Chi on any old FAQs you have lying around? :/

A player, 4 October 2023 12:29

would have assumed that at some point there'd be a "alwys round up/down" rule

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 October 2023 13:08 · in reply

It happens infrequently enough that it's best handled case by case.

saaam (not official), 4 October 2023 14:34

Yeah. For some cards it was round down, for others round up, depending on whether it would balance the power of the card or not.

A player, 4 October 2023 14:41 · in reply

Fairly sure Oni no Chi was played as round down in the Ancestral Before Time. For the half-dozen or so times he might actually have seen play...

saaam (not official), 4 October 2023 14:41

Half-dozen times... across the entire globe.

saaam (not official), 4 October 2023 14:41

Possibly including the multiverse.

Alex Jones (rules official), 4 October 2023 16:33

Didn't Leon have a stupid Forgotten Tomb deck that used Oni no Chi?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 4 October 2023 16:33 · in reply

I haven't found anything.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 4 October 2023 16:42 · in reply

btw i also havent found why there's "rounded up" in Oracle https://oracleofthevoid.com/#game=l5r,#cardid=1446

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 October 2023 18:26 · in reply

You know, I might have just been in a different mood when I Oracle'd Concealed Weapon and let basic math determine it should be rounded up (since the math rule is for .5+ to round up and .4 and down to round down). 😛 If there's nothing to go on besides a player 's memory, I might just let math rule on Oni no Chi too, despite it being contrary to Qalyar's recollection.

A player, 4 October 2023 18:32 · in reply

So, I don't think this holds with recent cards, but many of the rounding cards are "round detrimentally". So Gold costs and Honor losses round up, bonuses round down. But that's certainly not universal (Maho-Tsukai, Nature Provides, etc.).

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 October 2023 18:36 · in reply

Oh, sure, but "detrimental" can be subjective, even in L5R (I WANTED my Oni to have lower Force, because [obscure effect]), whereas math is just cold, hard emotionless rules. 🙂

A player, 4 October 2023 18:40

To be fair, any time you want your Oni no Chi to be anything except maybe "in my Crimson and Jade binder", it's because [obscure effect].

A player, 4 October 2023 18:44

Fun fact: bringing Oni no Chi into play is the only non-Spell Ritual action in game. Not that there's anything to DO with that, mind you.

A player, 4 October 2023 18:48

I suppose if you're so inclined, you could try to do something silly involving stacking multiple Ritual bonuses to Chi to make the Oni's Force kinda almost relevant. In Legacy play, some cheap Chi-dominant shugenja (Isawa Koizumi, Isawa Tanayama XPCW, Tanemono, that sort of thing) + Purification [the RoB one] + Incense of Concentration?

I ... that's still awful. But it's at least a little unexpected.

A player, 10 October 2023 23:03

with consecutive ranged attackes can you combine them?

A player, 10 October 2023 23:03

I believe in earlier editions of the game you needed particular card effects to combine ranged attacks from separate units

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 October 2023 23:04 · in reply

Probably not, but direct card examples would help.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 October 2023 23:05

And yeah, also I could try to give a contemporary answer if you're using an older Ruleset, but I'm best equipped to answer under current Rules. 🙂

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 October 2023 23:07

Ah, easy then. Ranged Attacks can only be combined if they're from cards in units. RoD's RA is from itself.

A player, 10 October 2023 23:07

ahh so its not in a unit, got it

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 October 2023 23:08

Yeah. Even though you have to have a Tactician "perform" it, the RA is not from him, it's from the Formation.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 October 2023 14:34

Neither Personalty's armor or weapons modify stats during duel resolution of a duel one of your Monks is in.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 October 2023 14:36

Now, that's just their modifiers. If they have a trait or ability that gave a bonus or penalty to the duel stat, that still applies.

Answers on: Inferno, Burn the Mind
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 October 2023 22:29 · in reply

All combined RAs need to be able to target the same target legally independently.

A player, 12 October 2023 22:37

Fire shugenja cast Cti and targets personality for ra 4. If I combine it with BtM, for a total of ra 8, would the target bow? Due to BtM effect?

A player, 12 October 2023 22:38

I had to clarify my question

A player, 12 October 2023 22:39

So, if I'm reading it right then, Call the Inferno could target a Personality with Followers, thus bypassing that shielding, but Burn the Mind couldn't, so they wouldn't stack in that situation for BtM's bow

But they could stack on a Personality without Followers as usual, and BtM would bow it

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 October 2023 22:43

Yeah, the Rules are a little unclear on this. They say the combining Interrupt adds its strength (with any modifications). Now, that could be interpreted as modifications just to the strength, or all modifications to the attack effect. I believe it means and has been ruled as the latter, so it would bow instead of destroying.

A player, 12 October 2023 22:45

In this situation would you still be able to target the personality with followers?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 October 2023 22:46 · in reply

No, that part is entirely clear: "The original attack effect may only target a card that it, as well as each of the combining actions, could target."

A player, 12 October 2023 22:46

Ok

A player, 12 October 2023 23:00

Thanks

A player, 12 October 2023 23:51 · in reply

I always thought that the "any modifications" part only refers to the strength. Since later in the explanation, it says "All other characteristics of the attack effect come from the original."

A player, 12 October 2023 23:52

So Burn the Mind can be combined with another RA and the bowing effect doesn't carry over.

A player, 13 October 2023 00:02

Unless BtM is the original that the others modify

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 October 2023 00:03 · in reply

Yeah, I've interpreted that clause as "all characteristics are "from" the original attack, even if inherited from the combined ones". I wonder if @kempy_nezumi can dig up a Rules Forum post about combined RA characteristics in Ivory/20F, because the CR has its issues, and I can't remember perfectly.

A player, 13 October 2023 00:10

Also, as long as I have been aware, having RA that hits through followers is far and few between

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 October 2023 00:11 · in reply

Well, targeting is a completely separate issue. All the combined RAs have to legally be able to target the same target individually is another clause entirely.

A player, 13 October 2023 00:41

Quick question because it came up once and now its stuck in my head.

Asako Keishiki (?) The inquisitor that gives -2f if you predict an opposing personality attacking.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 October 2023 00:57 · in reply

Or does the personality with the spell have to be used battle?

A player, 13 October 2023 07:26

I think what you can do is use the duel as an Open during the Actions Phase, then go to battle and refresh it with the holding to then use it asa Battle.

A player, 13 October 2023 07:27

Ah wait, I misunderstood, it's a home spell

A player, 13 October 2023 07:27

I think the spell needs to be in the battle to be targeted by the holding at all.

Alex Jones (rules official), 13 October 2023 07:59

Yes

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 October 2023 18:30 · in reply

There's problem becasue in whole Ivory cardpool there's probably only one card that have attack as battle action with "instead" in their effect (Utaku Sakiko exp from ThA). And there's no single question about her ability.

A player, 13 October 2023 18:42

When combining range, melee, or fear what's the order? When is combining started? When do special effects kick in?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 October 2023 18:43

btw found some funny basic math answer about something with ra https://imgur.com/SF0oVTB

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 October 2023 18:45 · in reply

in case of burn the mind if you play it as battle action - bowing is an effect of ranged attack, but combining happens earlier in interrupt window. by combining you just increase value of attack

A player, 13 October 2023 18:53 · in reply

So if call the Inferno is the initiator, the combining happens before the bonus effect of call the inferno?

A player, 13 October 2023 18:54

Making call the Inferno a RA 8

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 October 2023 18:55

You mean if you have 2 copies in same units, announce one and interupt with another?

A player, 13 October 2023 18:55

So fire shugenja has call the Inferno and burn the mind.

A player, 13 October 2023 18:56

Fire shugenja cast call the Inferno. Combines with burn the mind. Ra 8. Target personality with followers. Kill.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 October 2023 18:57

a) you announce ra from call and target op card b) in interrupt window you interrupt with ra from burn and increase ra by 4 c) attack from call resolves with strength of 8

A player, 13 October 2023 18:58

Ah ok

A player, 13 October 2023 18:59

And it just takes the ra strength of burn the mind, not the bonus effect?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 October 2023 18:59 · in reply

Not legal. Burn must be able to also legally target.

A player, 13 October 2023 19:00 · in reply

cards are there

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 October 2023 19:00

And it seems Kempy and I are disagreeing if the Burn effect carries over. It's the fault of unclear CR, but the targeting thing is clear.

A player, 13 October 2023 19:01

nah i think not, he was telling me the same stuff as You about combining and legalities yesterday @Brook Cunningham especcialy about targeting a personality with followers

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 October 2023 19:02 · in reply

But if we target a card without attachment like follower, you may combine them.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 October 2023 19:02

Maybe I'm misreading his posts directly above. If so, apologies, but the Onyx CR will be clearer. 🙂

A player, 13 October 2023 19:03 · in reply

and what about the effect on burn that it bows instead of killing?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 October 2023 19:03

And in my opinion "bonus effect" don't carry over from interrupt attack

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 October 2023 19:05

So in case above burn just increase ranged attack from call, but bowing effect is ignored. But if you announce main RA from burn, even if you increase it as interrupt by 4 from call it will bow cards instead destroying it.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 October 2023 19:08

@Brook Cunningham Ah, just noticed that Hinosai edited his post. Earlier it wasnt about shooting through followers

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 October 2023 19:09 · in reply

No, in this case, interrupt also must be able to shoot through followers. So as @Brook Cunningham wrote above, it is illegal.

PS. I answered earlier without noticing you edited your post.

A player, 13 October 2023 19:48

So to make it clear, using Inferno first and then combining with Burn will only increase the RA strength and not carry over the bow effect. But since Burn cannot target someone with followers, neither can Inferno.

A player, 13 October 2023 19:48

So you'd need multiple copies of Inferno or something like Steal the Candle's Flame which is an actual interrupt that add strength to MA or RA

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 October 2023 19:50

Kempy's assertion is that the bow effect doesn't carry; I disagree, but the CR is unclear and precedential contemporary rulings can't be found, due to scarcity of this sort of this interaction in Ivory/20F. We agree about the targeting, though.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 October 2023 19:51

An Onyx CR is in the works in which this will be addressed.

A player, 13 October 2023 19:51

I think kempy just clarified that the bowing doesn't carry over if combined. Only if Burn was the original RA to be used

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 October 2023 19:52 · in reply

I am bit confused now. I think it doesnt carry if ist and effect as played as Interrupt, but i think it is applied if it's in base attack ability.

Well, I've brought it to the Onyx team's attention, and it will be sorted eventually.

A player, 13 October 2023 19:58

Because the part we pointed out before I think was "each of those action's relevant attack effect adds its own strength(with any modifications) to the strength of the original attack

A player, 13 October 2023 19:58

A player, 13 October 2023 19:58

it means modifications only to the strength

A player, 13 October 2023 19:58

its not stated

A player, 13 October 2023 19:59

something like Melee 4 but 5 if Shadowlands

A player, 13 October 2023 19:59

it says any modyfications and this is indeed a modyfication...

A player, 13 October 2023 19:59

in the second paragraph it specifies that "All other characteristics of the attack effect come from the original"

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 October 2023 19:59

it's from 20F advanced rulebook

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 October 2023 19:59

A player, 13 October 2023 20:02

Yeah, it shouldn't go through Followers but it's still a lethal RA

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 October 2023 20:02

Yes, I can see that interpretation. As Kempy noted, few and possibly only 1 RA in Ivory/20F even had odd effects for which this would even come up. Onyx CR is coming and will be clearer.

A player, 13 October 2023 20:03

@Brook Cunningham a player in ToH Legacy, as there's Event phase, cards are revealed up simultaneously as in Ivory or one by one, from left to right, as in previous arcs?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 18 October 2023 11:44 · in reply

Tell you what? Today, I'll go in and convert to Ivory-wording the 25 cards remaining in the Oracle that still refer to the Events Phase (because I never finished full Ivory conversion) , so there will no longer be any need for TOH Legacy to have such a Phase? 🙂 (P.S. I know I haven't reworded all the Events themselves either, but there's 543 of the darned things, and I've gotten to most of them, so it's clear how the others should work. 😛 )

A player, 18 October 2023 13:25

One by one, but we shortcut it by revealing all

A player, 18 October 2023 15:24

I rarely see those kinds of events used. I think I was the only one who used Harsh Choices.

A player, 18 October 2023 15:25

I think New Order was also used for a time by the Scorp.

A player, 18 October 2023 15:31

Yeah.

saaam (not official), 18 October 2023 18:08

They should be more explicit in saying that if you have no cards in your focus pool (as in you couldn't draw any from your deck or ran out part-way through), and no cards left in your hand, you're forced to strike, too.

because it will straighten in case of STRATEGIES and it will not work for Items or Followers.

A player, 21 October 2023 09:47

Action on a strategy, you paid for the Open on RN which is based on the item cost (I'm at least assuming the asterisked gold icon being before the colon means it's the cost for the action)

There were 583 Events. I didn't finish updating all of them (and a lot of other cards in the Oracle) to Ivory-compliance... yet. 😛 OBH shouldn't need an Events Phase once I do. However, as Kempy said, you can take a look at most of them to see how they would work in an Events-phase-free environment. In Legacy/Open, all keywords do what they do in the most recent (or the last most-recent in which they had an effect of some kind, if they're not existant or have been reverted to only be flavorful in Onyx/20F) environment. Only if you were playing strict Samurai Edition simulation Rules would Kensai only do whatever it did in that particular environment (which, without looking or remembering offhand, I assume is nothing since you asked? 😛 ).

Interrupt Window happens after action (Open, Limited, Battle, Engage) is announced and target is chosen, but before action's resolution. I suggest to check 20F (Twenty Festivals) Comprehensive Rules for more detailed information.

Reaction just may be used to to react to any trigger described in their text. As MRP of Sun is Interrupt it can't be negated by FoYK as it cancels only Reactions.

the +1PH from a card applied to other personalities in play: In OBH, proclaiming is qualified as an interrupt. Does that mean that the personality is proclaimed after entering play, thus getting the +1PH bonus, or before entering play, and therefore not?

A player, 31 October 2023 21:24

@kempy_nezumi

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 31 October 2023 21:30 · in reply

My interpretation would be that, even thought it's an Interrupt, it creates an effect that's delayed until after the Personality enters play ("after you Recruit a Personality"), thus yielding the same amount of Honor you would get from Proclaiming under 20F Rules.

A player, 31 October 2023 21:32

in other words, printed PH gained during proclaim?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 31 October 2023 21:33

No, the opposite. It will be after the Personality is in play, so any blanket bonus PH to Personalities in play would apply.

A player, 31 October 2023 21:33

I believe the Proclaim Interrupt should create a delayed effect which, after the Personality enters play, gives you Honor = its (then) PH.

A player, 31 October 2023 21:33

So, what he just said.

A player, 31 October 2023 21:34

Among other things, this means that if the Personality somehow fails to enter play, then as Gene Wilder once said, you get nothing!
