building my first dark path of shadow deck.
was Ninja considered a faction in the jade era, or was it like shadowlands insofar as being a trait but not a faction?

was Ninja considered a faction in the jade era, or was it like shadowlands insofar as being a trait but not a faction?
building my first dark path of shadow deck.
It was a full faction. Meaning that all of a sudden someone like Bayushi Aramoro was a member of your Clan.
Just like when they made Monk a clan. It's a trait, and a Clan, which really didn't help.
But it was super fun to play. I played Ninja for as long as it was legal to.
I also have a bunch of decks as starting points if there's interest.
I'm working off of the decks shown on The Shadowlands Refuge of the Lion Clan via archive.org but if you have your posted somewhere i'd be happy to factor them in 🙂

the one posted as "Best Deck in EJ" was made by a really good player who was local to me back then; I recognize his name, and I know I lost to him a lot. so I'm using his as the model but substituting for my own physical collection as need be
(thanks for clarifying btw)
Yeah, that's pretty good. Lots of options. Be very mindful of whether they're Open, or Extended Jade, or Strict Jade. And then which sets they include, because the power balance changed very rapidly in Jade.
urf I thought EJ and Open were the same thing in 99/2000, must be remembering wrong. what was the difference between the two?
99/00 was a Jade. i joined much later, but wasnt there jade and jade extended and also open?
I was 13/14 back then so I barely remember, it's when I started playing, but my memory was that open and extended jade were the same and that strict jade was different. curious as to the differences between open and EJ since i don't clearly remember
and Open was allowing anything printed i believe (except some bans?)
Correct.
"Open" meant from Imperial Edition all the way up to whatever present Jade expansion it was.
aha, ok. thank you
we must have been playing open in the tournaments at my local game store in 99; remember getting blasted by desperate measures a few times
ok. so if ninja was a faction, why was the guy who built "Best Deck in EJ" using Alliance? all but one (Soshi Jomakyo) of his scorpion people are ninjas as well. if you name Scorpion as your alliance clan when the event fires off do you get 4g off on the scorpion ninja (2g for scorp alliance and 2g for your clan discount?)
that sounds absurd since they're already part of your faction but. perhaps not
Correct.
The Ninja discount is -2G on all Ninja cards, not based on "Clan discount".
So Alliance to Scorpion would get you 4G reduced or 6G full price Aramoro.
And Desperate Measures was annoying, but still not too bad. Winter Warfare was disastrous when playing as Ninja. Same with Storms of War.
I don't think Shadowlands was ever a clan alignment. The old rulebooks I've looked at all say that while YJA (and later Shadowlands hoard) was a "clan", "it has no members" (i.e. there are no personalities with the "Yogo Junzo's Army" or "Shadowlands Horde" traits)
Correct, SL was not.
That's what I remember (from Pearl, I guess), too
Imperial/SCC rulebook
Yeah that's what I was reading. YJA is a clan, but has no members
^^ she got +1F for: a) using Honor keyword (discarding Honor card to increase/decrease honor gain/loss) b) using any ability from strategy card with Honor keyword eg like Die On Your Feet c) both
Does the Honor keyword make the whole card an honor card?
Because otherwise, its Battle action isn't a Battle Honor: action
Urrrgh
We argued about that repeatedly
So a) only?
There were questions about whether an ability having a given keyword made the card have that keyword, and then whether the card having a keyword made its abilities have that keyword.
It was especially contentious for Personalities.
Anyway.
My guess is the strictest interpretation would be A only.
Actually, that's the bit I'm least sure about...
Although I think it be a nice card if both applied, they could have just made the Battle an Battle Honor action.
I'm pretty sure that Die on Your Feet's ability is an Honor ability.
Yeah. I would argue that the Battle ability is an Honor Battle ability, but when discarded by an effect for having the keyboard, it's not played/used/etc.
So if you play it as a Strategy, it boost Tayuko.
You'd have to check the rulebook for a), however.
Does it say "Honour Interrupt: Discard an Honour card, etc" or just "Interrupt: Discard an Honor card, etc"?
You could do well finding other cards with keywords that count towards stuff like this. Establishing precedent and all that.
I know there was precedent at some times for the keyword to apply to all actions
Yes
And I think that got changed.
Yeah. That's what made the game almost unplayable, waffling on rules all the time
It's not like we can reach back to the devs at this time...
Perhaps, but it's still a better game by a mile than other popular card games.
True. Just venting
Gilador and Macbeth were on dev/rules team, they'd be the closest to active people to ask
First, there's no Honor in any rulebook/comprehensive rules as it was introduced in Evil Portents and its described on cards only.
Also what i found in latest CR:
That's pretty much what I was thinking.
Although balance wise I wouldn't mind DoYF giving Tayuko a +2 assuming other cards were balanced around that power curve.
I'm fine with her as she is. Because with her wording you can pump her during Limited using other honor gains and interrupt them with Honor cards.
it just requires specific build that mix Open/Battle honor gains.
Anyway i was asking becasue i found a deck with her and lot of Honor battle cards. I think someone who made it played her wrong.
Honor battle cards?
You mean honor cards with battle actions?
i mean Strategies with Honor keyword and Battle abilities
etc
^^ anywayreally nice piece of art
He may have been wrong, but if you have some way to draw them, there's no reason not to discard them for extra honor if they're not the type of actions you need vs your opponent like send units back to the front if he's not sending your units home ect.
I'm personally very hesitant to discard cards with small benefits when the cards have actions that would be much more useful in battle especially if I don't have a lot of draw mechanics to replenish my hand.
Although I think the idea of mixing honor/dishonor cards with military decks is a neat idea and good thematic for the game.
Sometimes you may just surprise attacker and cross on his turn during attack with such small gain(s).
escpeially when you play you may use Honor as Repeatable
that was probably going to be changed in Onyx
to once per trigger
Sure, but if I can't replenish my hand and I'm going into battle with 2-3 cards vs a full hand I'm risking my army and that can very much be the game.
and it's also a meta agaonst honor runner- you may interrupt his crossing gain
(and it also triggers Tayuko's trait)
Regardless, I felt like some sets really lacked in draw mechanics to keep the game moving.
i think its enough Destined cards in 20F environm, ent
Not that I want people drawing 3-5 cards a turn.
lately i'm playin every second da with some guy i found by accident. he's in my time zone and he's learning so i play many not-so-top decks and enjoy so many weird ideas
Destined helps but isn't always super available in all decks.
Dueling decks can also burn through your fate deck pretty quickly.
hmm, battle duel might have problem, but honor duel should honor out before his deck is empty
unless play against dedicated dishonor
Assuming your not against someone who slows you down through dishonor.
but its classic honor vs dishonor problem. time out 😄
There should be more interesting ends to those games than running out of cards.
or about duel decks - new version of
that could shuffle random 10 cards from discard and remove other
Yeah that's one way to bring an honor/dishonor tie to an end. But considering that you might not draw that card until later on you might run out of cards trying to get that influence.
there's event tutor cards in environment, so dedicated Political Standoff should work. i saw s such builds
Shuffle 10 random cards? All I see is shuffle all your fate discard back into your fate deck...
i mean new version of this cad with modified text, as shuffling whole deck in is dumb in 20f
in previous editions focus pools were mandatory created so decking out was much more faster
every duel = mandatory 3 cards discard
There's also Strength Remains
https://images.oracleofthevoid.com/l5r/bc/b3/printing_11690_1_details.jpg
Cool.
But I haven't been able to make those work reliably.
Well, cf https://oracleofthevoid.com/#game=l5r,#cardid=9934 and other cards in Emperor
Btw, I think Obi of Silence should have said:
Limited: If your Fate deck is empty and you have not created any duels this game, even if this card is in your discard pile: Shuffle your Fate discard pile into your deck.
That's a bit harsh, dueling decks are the decks that need a reshuffle the most.
it's a z bit messy. Some pre ce/ee cards were rewritten in Oracle to have eg Political keyword that replaced Political in their abilities. https://oracleofthevoid.com/#game=l5r,#cardid=64
Shugenja with this Spell attached uses Fear effect from other card in Unit and Interrupt it with Okura is Released
He gets 1F bonus before card is destroyed, yes?
The Fear effect bows the card, then Okura is Released's effect destroys the card.
Then, after the action's resolution ends, Nourished by Fallen Leaves' effect resolves and gives the Shug +1F.
Thanks.
Also need confirmation as i think it works. I Recruit Daiishu including Invest paying for him with Officer's Lodge. So I may just search for Follower (The Mountainborn or Bound Spirit) becasue of Invest and attach it to him paying 1 less.
Yes.
That Interrupt should be much simpler as a Response, but it still works.
Tireless Response: If you bowed this Holding to produce Gold for the action to Recruit a Commander, Equip a target Follower to them from your hand for 1 less Gold.
(For an Interrupt or Response, "the action" refers to the action its interrupting or responding to.)
Hi fellas, question. Do cost and effect rule applied clearly in Imperial format?
Like in a case of 12th Black Scroll
Er...
I'm not quite sure what you mean.
The part where you must destroy 5 cards, if you play imperial format, is still considered as an effect right?
That's an effect. It always was one in Clan Wars, Jade, etc.
Ok, another...is it required to destroy 5 cards even if i have less than that in my army? The "must" word is the tricky one. Although for me as long i have 5 or less cards they're all destroyed. I mean it doesn't need to be 5.
You destroy as many as possible.
Well, each player does.
Ok cool many thanks! There's a little confusion in our playgroup regarding this one, which is why I asked.
It was usually done with just one defender.
I agree with that
You nuke as many cards as possible, and that's it. Usually hurts the attacker way more than the defender.
What was final verdict about interaction between Voice of Experience and Seppun Tasuke? May use Holding's Interrupt to increase eg FV of any played Strategy to gain Affection token?
Or it just need to be ability that directly discards or shows a card like this:
When a Strategy is played, it is discarded by the rulebook, not by the action.
Voice of Experience only affects cards which are discarded by a cost or effect of the action.
This Open action affect until end of turn, yes? So every time a Province is going to be refilled this turn (up to difference) i may refill it face-up up eg after Event is played or after Dynasty: discard.
Correct.
What are the BEST rules to play
The old border cards
Not the oldest
But not the newest
I woukd stick to ruleset of edition of most cards you have. If theres eg more cards from Diamond than others, just use Diamond.
Otherwise use Obsidian Hand or Emperor.
What is obsidian
And emperor you mean the ruling of emperor?
Obsidian Hand is Legacy ruleset that keeps two important rulings: clan discount and old gold system.
Emperor = Emperor edition ruleset. Peak of classic ruleset before they changed a lot in Ivory.
Yep, Im reading from your drop files
Hello
Whats was the order to trigger and resolve reactions?
In what sense?
For example after a duel ends. Which player can react first?
Active player gets first option.
But: it's important to check that they're reacting to the same thing.
The active player
?
The one whose turn it is.
Yes
And how Manu reactions can he perform
As much as he wants
And then Give priority to the other player?
No, it's an action round.
For each trigger, the first player has the first opportunity to take a Reaction or pass, then the player to his left, and so on round the table.
The same as all other action rounds.
So I can play a duel, react to the trigger of creating a duel, then the oppoment triggers. The duel is done, I can react to the duel, and then the other player does and so on
Yes, except there are many things you can react to during a duel.
You can react to the challenge, you can react before the duel starts, you can react after the duel starts, you can react to each focus (before and after), you can react to the strike (before and after), you can react to the focussed cards being revealed (before and after), you can react to effects created by Focus Effects (or other text triggered by focussed cards being revealed), you can react to the determination of the winner, you can react to the outcome of the duel, you can react to the focussed cards being discarded, you can react to the duel ending...
And, of course, you can react to any of the steps in the action (or other effect!) that created the duel...
Ok
This is part of the reason why Ivory got rid of Reactions, and had Interrupts instead.
Why?
Because there are so many timing points when they can be played.
Interrupts can only be played in a particular window when an action is taken.
They create delayed effects, which can be triggered by any of the steps I mentioned above, but that's much simpler to resolve.
Is there a chart showing timing windows for reactions and interrupts? My understanding is quite general. Interrupts are played after an action is taken but before it's effects resolve whereas reactions are played after an action resolves.
No, Reactions can be taken in response to any trigger.
Ok. So any trigger for reactions and interrupts.
Not for Interrupts - that's the whole point of them.
Interrupt actions can only be taken in a particular step while an action is being taken.
Reaction actions can be taken at any timing point.
(... as specified in their text)
Ah I see now.
So basically, Interrupts are limited in terms of when they can be played while reactions are not.
Like a watered down version of reactions...somewhat.
Yeah.
Onyx would have added "Response" abilities, which would be played in a step in the action sequence after the action's effects have resolved.
As an Interrupt, it's very clunky, because you don't know when you play it whether the personality is going to be killed.
I like that
This is why I pushed Reese to introduce Responses.
You have to think what reactions play first to avoid others
The problem was, I suggested the name "Riposte", which he didn't like, so they didn't go into Ivory.
