Hey-hey! I am slowly learning the rules (reading the 20 Festivals, ‘cause that’s the latest, if I’m not mistaken). And one thing kinda got me a bit confused (the rules booklets are not exactly paragons of clarity). When a player declares attacks, does he declare attackers for all battlefields before the defender declares defenders, or one battlefield at a time?
Sun and Moon #rules-questions
Messages from the Sun and Moon #rules-questions Discord channel, copied for Oracle of the Void. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings and the rulebooks may differ.
Also, does anyone know what edition does the Sun&Moon Learn the Game doodad teach?
About rules, try to use/read Comprehensive Rules document instead of rulebooks.
And yes you assign your attackers to all Provinces at same time ( same for Defenders). Then attacker decides order of battles.
Need to check later but i m sure that SnM uses Ivory ruleset for tutorial. Also whole engine uses Ivory turn sequence.
Thanks for the relies. The damn game is not making this easy 🙂
Well...
You assign your attackers in one go.
You don't have to assign to all of the battlefields!
(But there is a battle at each province, regardless of whether any attackers or defenders assigned there)
Yeah, I've got that. Thanks.
Another question. It's kinda relevant to rules, kinda not. Is there something in the game to incentivize aggression. I did not play yet, so I have no real experience, but on paper the strength of the provinces seem high enough for an attack to be pretty risky. And considering that the losing side loses all their participating troops, how often is the game resolved in one massive combat where one player is left with nothing and has pretty much no chance to rebuild?
That is frequently the case, yes.
There is a massive element of "slippery slope" in the game
So... You have to try to ensure you stay at the top of the slope.
The game can be a great adrenaline rush...
OK, while I am getting answers. How good are the premade Sun'n'Moon decks for learning the game?
Those premade decks are afaik just base Ivory starters.
Nothing exciting, mostly boring force counting (as for early Ivory). Should be ok for first game or two, but then better to use something different.
Was there any significant rules changes from Ivory/20f to Onyx besides phasing out Limited actions?
You'll have to ask someone on playtest - we'd not been told of anything.
Hell, we only realised that Limited abilities were going when we were proofreading the PDF for ... one of the 20F sets... and saw an ability with "Open: If it is your turn..."
So we asked Reese, and he said, "Oh yeah, we're getting rid of Limited actions".
To which the Rules Team's collective response was 🙄
I was told there were two important things in Onyx Arc. First, Mantis clan Personalities with 20F/Onyx (blue/black) legality have still Mantis clan alignment even if theres no Mantis Stronghold in base Onyx. And second thing, theres new Response window. Response works like Interrupt but its window is after action resolution.
Ruleset is same like in Twenty Festivals plus:
- Response is an action, that is played like Interrupt except that the window for play is after the resolution of the action.
- Kharmic, Lobby and Favor milling card ability are Open but with "on your turn only".
- The Akasha is a Clan. All Personalities with Naga mon (not keyword, but only mon in upper left corner) on their cards have Akasha Clan Alignment.
- Mantis is still Clan Alignment, even if they don't have legal Stronghold in Onyx Arc format.
Technical Errata: Akifumi Sensei from The Blackest Storm have "Akasha" instead "Naga".
SINCERITY - At the end of your Dynasty, add a Sincerity token if in Province, or remove them if in play.
HONESTY - You may turn a face-down Honesty card in your hand face-up as an Open action.
Ah, yeah, Response.
It took me a loooong time to persuade Reese we needed Response abilities.
Probably not helped by my suggestion of "Riposte" as the name 🙂
Cards shown by this Spell return to deck in original order face-down?
It is not clear, but I would say yes
Yes, you return them.
