@kempy_nezumi I have a question regarding ambush... can I use it to target Otomo Suikihime? Imo its text prevents its owner to assign her to a battlefield, but it should not prevent other players from doing so... am I right?

Messages from the Sun and Moon #rules-questions Discord channel, copied for Oracle of the Void. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings and the rulebooks may differ.
Thanks a lot!!, I thought so since its text only prevents the owner from doing so...
It's why Bayushi Saya was so nasty in Diamond Edition.

You'll note that it says "he assigns" not "his controller assigns him."
Saya+ambush made for a lot of broken hearts.
Plus being Dishonored in the process.
You shouldn't have let me target you with Ambush!
I would tell this to people unironically and then one of them was in a game and they tried to Ambush one of my bowed big units.
I told them that "The Time Is Not Right To Ambush"
"Please Don't Don't Do it."
They thought I was joking...then I whipped this out...
That's really good meta, actually. Especially since it stops Kolat Assassin/Kolat Master, without refunding them.
Yep. I always told people it's more important to be familiar with the rules and cardpool than to be a good player.
It depends.
But it certainly helps.
It's a lot of what helped me win when I couldn't afford good rares.
It's subjective of course, but I always recognized I wasn't a great player.
Know the cardpool, know the local players and their decks/styles, and then cheap-meta®️ my way to success.
I was a better metagame person than player. I remember doing deck testing the night before Emerald Championships. We tested for almost two days. I went like 3-14 against my group with my deck that I was going to bring.
But I got top 8 and they didn't even get the cut at top 16.
Mmhmm.
I cross reference with how well my deck played against opposition, what the field looked like, and my cardpool.
One of my friends was a very good shadowlands player, but I knew shadowlands wasn't going anywhere. If I put shadowlands meta in my deck, then that just means I don't have cards for decks that will appear more often.
This is why I can't make Lion decks. They just feel wrong.
Hah.
Reminds me of one of the MtG Worlds, where the winner looked at the field and saw two main decks making up the whole field, so he built a deck purely out of meta for both, and steamrolled.
Can't recall which one, and Googling isn't working as I'd hoped.
Yeah. Absolute legend. I think it's called "sligh" or something similar to that.
L5R will never have that problem though. There are people who will refine and get maximum performance out of a clan out of loyalty, even if that clan is bad. Your deck has to be good, not "meta against the most popular decks"
With notable exceptions.
It's why I loved Ninja. It was just a platform, giving you almost endless options.
I used to run No Personality Decks out of that. 22+ Events, almost all meta.
The number of times you heard people getting knocked out and complaining loudly of "jank that nobody should be playing", lol
Pretty much. People with decks made out of $20 worth of cards, but they meta enough, and get good pairings.
The same goes for yugi... usually most of the players chose meta decks, but there are some that goes with the anti-meta route and those can be very difficult to deal with
I'm a horrible meta player. I've tried putting meta cards in my decks and even when facing those decks I can't seem to find the cards I need on the turns I need them.
moving to "looking for a game" since my reply isn't about rules...
Ah, Bayushi Saya. A staple on my Mantis Magistrate deck which almost won me a kotei!
