i have a question regarding this card

A player, 1 March 2021 08:37

given that Ranged attack cannot target a personality with followers

A player, 1 March 2021 08:37

if i redirect a Ranged Attack to a Yojimbo with a follower - does it cancel the Ranged Attack or is it resolved normally against the Yojimbo, disregarding the follower?

Alex Jones (rules official), 1 March 2021 09:26

If you target a Yojimbo who's not a legal target for the original action, Final Sacrifice does nothing.

Alex Jones (rules official), 1 March 2021 09:27

The player of the original action is free to choose any legal target.

Alex Jones (rules official), 1 March 2021 09:29

If your opponent takes a Ranged Attack action, and you Interrupt it with Final Sacrifice and target your Yojimbo Personality who's at the current battlefield and has no Followers, the Yojimbo is a legal target for the Ranged Attack action, so they will be the target.

Alex Jones (rules official), 1 March 2021 09:30

OTOH, if the Yojimbo has a Follower attached, they aren't a legal target for the Ranged Attack, so Final Sacrifice does nothing.

A player, 1 March 2021 09:47

great, thank you

A player, 1 March 2021 09:47

much appreciated!

kempy_nezumi (not official), 1 March 2021 10:29

Final Sacrice was one of those cards that caused targeting requirement in 20F. Original Ivory ruling was a mess.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 1 March 2021 10:31

Originally in Ivory you could announce ranged attack without targeting, so playing interrupts was blind as you didnt know where this ranged attack will hit.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 1 March 2021 10:31

That was clarified later in 20f

A player, 1 March 2021 10:44

oh, good to know

A player, 1 March 2021 10:44

seem we always played ivory wrong - we announced the target right away

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 March 2021 14:03

Well, that was the right way to do it before and after Ivory, so don't feel bad about that. Blind redirection was an unfortunate side effect of some templating-changes-growing pains introduced in that Edition which, as Kempy said, were soon fixed with 20 Festivals, which added a "choose targets" step to taking an action, which takes place before interrupts, after which the action actually starts resolving and targeting technically "happens".

A player, 1 March 2021 16:29

I see some of the later sets introduced melee attacks. Are these similar to range attacks?

A player, 1 March 2021 16:30

Also, if a card doesn't say bow to perform range three, Does that mean that I can use it multiple times? It doesn't list it as a tireless battle action either so it's a bit unclear

saaam (not official), 1 March 2021 16:33

Nah. Later editions only let you take an action off a card once, unless it says "Repeatable".

saaam (not official), 1 March 2021 16:33

So no infinite ranged attacks.

saaam (not official), 1 March 2021 16:33

And yeah, Melee attacks are kinda like a ranged attack.

A player, 1 March 2021 16:34

Ok good to know thanks. So is there any difference between range and melee?

saaam (not official), 1 March 2021 16:37

The cards have to be closer together on the table for Melee attacks to work.

saaam (not official), 1 March 2021 16:38

πŸ˜„

A player, 1 March 2021 16:38

Haha

A player, 1 March 2021 16:39

Smash melee close even

kempy_nezumi (not official), 1 March 2021 17:16

yes, melee works same way as ranged mechanically. they probably included it as there were many items or abilities with "destroy a card with X or less F", so it was just better to shorten it and make new mechanic becasue you can't put Ranged Attack on sword or something like that. i suspect so.

A player, 1 March 2021 17:40

Thanks!

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 March 2021 18:43

The change from the default "an action can be taken any number of times per turn as long as you can pay the cost again" (often, bowing the card, so unbowing it first would be required) lasted until Lotus Edition; from then on, all Lotus-legal cards and upwards were Once Per Turn by default. So, that's a way to tell by the printed versions, but the Oracle wordings of all cards should reflect the latter default, with "Repeatable" or "Any number of times per turn" added to all pre-Lotus-legal abilites with that default.

A player, 1 March 2021 18:52

Ok good to know! I'll check the printing version then! Specifically I just noticed akasha exp 2 had a range 3 without bowing and it makes a huge difference obviously Haha

A player, 1 March 2021 18:52

Also, is duelist the new text for double chi?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 1 March 2021 18:54

Duelist keyword was changing through editions. For most of time it wins ties if dueling against non duelist

kempy_nezumi (not official), 1 March 2021 18:54

in Celestial edition it allowed to focus first as challenger if you had lower of equal chi (against non duelist)

A player, 1 March 2021 18:57

Noyce! Very cool. Was there any rule changes or anything to improve multi player over the years? Or any recommendations?

A player, 1 March 2021 19:38 · in reply

are you familiar with War of Honor?

A player, 1 March 2021 19:38

it was a multiplayer format introduced in Celestial edition

A player, 1 March 2021 19:39

No, but I can look that up in the pdf I have of the rule book!

A player, 1 March 2021 19:40

check it out, altough it requires a board built of hexes that would require printing something to proxy it

A player, 1 March 2021 19:41

the format didn't take off but i had a lot of fun with it

kempy_nezumi (not official), 1 March 2021 19:41

there're scans of tiles in my dropbox, along with woh original rulebook, and fanmade corrected version to speed up some things

A player, 1 March 2021 19:44

Ok awesome!

Alex Jones (rules official), 1 March 2021 20:02

Melee Attacks are functionally the same as Ranged Attacks, except that you can't combine Melee Attacks with Ranged Attacks and vice versa.

saaam (not official), 1 March 2021 20:13

So... you can combine two Melee Attacks, though? Kind of a double-fisting thing?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 1 March 2021 20:15

fear, ranged and melee attacks can be combined

Alex Jones (rules official), 1 March 2021 20:15

They have to come from separate cards.

Alex Jones (rules official), 1 March 2021 20:15

And they have to be in the same unit, IIRC.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 March 2021 20:20

Both correct. I recall, specifically regarding coming from separate cards, someone once asked a question about combining two attacks that were separate abilities on the same card, and that's a no-go.

Alex Jones (rules official), 1 March 2021 20:22

And you can't combine a Melee Attack (or Ranged or Fear) from a Strategy with one from a card in a unit.

saaam (not official), 1 March 2021 20:25

We need a Blackened Sky but for Melee Attacks. πŸ˜„

saaam (not official), 1 March 2021 20:25

"Drunken Battlefield Brawl"

A player, 1 March 2021 20:58

Haha totally! Is there a sabotage equivalent card for range attacks? There definitely should be so you could rock range attacks deck

Alex Jones (rules official), 1 March 2021 21:24

Sabotage?

Alex Jones (rules official), 1 March 2021 21:24
[attachment: printing_6429_1_details.png]
A player, 1 March 2021 21:35

Yeah, is there a card to use a range attack against province strength?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 March 2021 21:36

Several. Burn it Down is one, from the same set as Sabotage, Honor Bound.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 March 2021 21:37

Castle of the Wasp Mantis Clan stronghold from Diamond/Lotus eras is half-entirely based around that concept, too.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 March 2021 21:40

Well, I said "several", but a closer look reveals maybe only maybe 10-20. Still, that Stronghold isn't a bad start if you want to make a whole deck around it.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 1 March 2021 21:40
[attachment: printing_1233_1_details.png]
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 March 2021 21:41

Yeah, that Stronghold. How do you post the image right in the chat, forgive my discord illiteracy?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 1 March 2021 21:41

copy from oracle and just paste here ctrl+v

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 March 2021 21:46

Cool, thanks! Here's a Personality for that deck:

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 March 2021 21:46

If you don't mind mixing Editions, that is.

A player, 1 March 2021 23:14

Oh very cool. That stronghold is awesome! And that personality too

A player, 1 March 2021 23:14

I totally have burn it down, just totally forgot about it. Thanks guys

A player, 4 March 2021 00:26

Hey y'all, Can someone enlighten me on: What enlightened personality means?

A player, 4 March 2021 00:27

Flavor

A player, 4 March 2021 00:27

I don't recall it having any rules effect

A player, 4 March 2021 00:28

Ok coolio. I assume the "vedic" trait is the same? (It's a naga guy qolsa that has it)

saaam (not official), 4 March 2021 00:28

Same with Villain.

saaam (not official), 4 March 2021 00:28

But not Hero. That one is useful.

A player, 4 March 2021 00:29

Search in the text field for enlightened and you'll see any cards that interact with it.

A player, 4 March 2021 00:30

Ok, cool! Will do Also wondering: I see they un-errated my old go to towers of Yogo stronghold. Did they do the same with my old favorite eternal halls of shiba???

A player, 4 March 2021 00:32

The oracle text should represent the latest wording

A player, 4 March 2021 00:35

Ok gotcha. Thanks

saaam (not official), 4 March 2021 00:42

It's kinda your choice in how you play, though.

saaam (not official), 4 March 2021 00:42

Well, playgroup's choice.

A player, 4 March 2021 00:43

Totally. I love my classic Phoenix honor run!

saaam (not official), 4 March 2021 00:49

I rather enjoy Strict Jade/Ext. Jade/Open.

saaam (not official), 4 March 2021 00:50

Just really hard to find players that played back then.

saaam (not official), 4 March 2021 00:59

Speaking of Open (or Clan Wars, up to SCC3), I've been really digging the Ruined Fortress. Such a fun box.

A player, 4 March 2021 01:12

Jade ftw

A player, 4 March 2021 01:13

That was the time period I was playing constantly

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 March 2021 04:25

Enlightened did have a Rulebook meaning. It's in the Legacy rules.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 March 2021 04:25

A Personality with the Enlightened keyword has +1F for each Ring in play. In addition, all players have the following ability, "Elemental Battle/Open: Bow your target performing Enlightened Personality to straighten a target Ring."

A player, 4 March 2021 04:28

We played all the time in jade as well. Really didn't like the winds addition and we can kind of played until spirit wars

A player, 4 March 2021 04:29

But now it's like a gift to find all these new cool cards! They finally made good crab and mantis strongholds which is awesome. And thanks for the heads up on enlightened

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 March 2021 04:31

NP. It was a very narrow period of time that it existed as a keyword/Rule.

A player, 4 March 2021 04:46

The rules guru speaks. :)

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 March 2021 04:47

bows

kempy_nezumi (not official), 4 March 2021 05:32

Yes, Enlightenment was a mechanical keyword during, surprise, Age of Enlightenment - Lotus edition.

A player, 4 March 2021 06:33

So knot of serpents stronghold. Can someone explain the ability. Not understating the "rank -2, or rank -1" And: "After your card destroys your warrior" ,- the language here seems unclear too

saaam (not official), 4 March 2021 06:37

Uhhh... LBS?

A player, 4 March 2021 06:39

Legend of the Burning Sands, an Arabian expansion/cousin gameline to L5R

A player, 4 March 2021 06:39

It only lasted a few sets back in the 90s, largely due to the release schedule (check out "Rolling Thunder")

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 March 2021 06:46

There were two "Siege" sets produced where a single deck would take on any number (optimally 3) other decks working cooperatively against it. The little samurai helmet icon = number of other players. And the deck had a lot of cards with the "Warrior" keyword for that other trait.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 March 2021 06:46

And of course, the Stronghold itself MADE "Warrior"-keyword Personalities.

A player, 4 March 2021 06:47

I may still have one or two of the Siege sets still in shrink i think.

A player, 4 March 2021 06:49

Ok interesting

A player, 4 March 2021 06:50

So that stronghold would only be for that specific format it sounds like

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 March 2021 06:50

Yes.

A player, 4 March 2021 06:51

Unfortunate, I see

A player, 4 March 2021 06:52

Too bad they didn't make a new naga stronghold that wasn't format specific! Thanks for the heads up

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 March 2021 06:53

The Naga were coming back in Onyx Edition. You can probably find a spoiler for that set somewhere around the internet.

A player, 4 March 2021 06:54

Haha, oh well! The heart of the shinomen forest is still pretty solid soo can't complain too much

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 March 2021 06:58

If you like Naga, and can find a Siege: Heart of Darkness set, it's pretty fun to go X-coop players v. 1 uber-player. The second and last Siege set recreated the united Clans fighting Fu Leng on the 2nd Day of Thunder. It was Siege: Clan War, and it came with a Shadowlands deck versus Monks, Toturi's Army, and Yoritomo's Alliance. πŸ™‚

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 March 2021 07:00

You had to take successive "Territory" cards from the uber-player before a special Clock deck ran out on you. Give or take; I forget the specifics, sadly.

A player, 4 March 2021 07:07

Oh that's awesome. So it was the naga deck versus three other decks then?

A player, 4 March 2021 07:08

That would explain why the strongholds so good Haha

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 March 2021 07:08

Yep. And I mean, out of the box it was 3 decks, but by design, it could be more. That's why the little samurai helmet icon = number of opposing players.

A player, 4 March 2021 07:08

Ah totally

A player, 4 March 2021 07:09

That other set sounds cool too I'll have to look that one up

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 March 2021 07:10

Enjoy! I'm sure @kempy_nezumi knows where to find a full copy of the Siege rules, but I don't offhand, sorry.

A player, 4 March 2021 07:11

No worries. I'll check his drop box He had rule books in there

A player, 4 March 2021 07:23

they are in the Variants area of his Drive

kempy_nezumi (not official), 4 March 2021 10:32

Yes, they are both there for heart and clan war.

A player, 4 March 2021 13:13

Both are great game modes, one you fight off hordes of naga advancing on the second city, and clan wars you are fighting your way in to the capital to defeat fu leng... both very thematic and challenging as it should be

A player, 4 March 2021 14:44

I'll take a look!

A player, 6 March 2021 22:01

Hey guys, Does singular mean unique? It appears on newer cards

A player, 6 March 2021 22:02

Non

A player, 6 March 2021 22:02

Singular mean one in play per player

A player, 6 March 2021 22:02

you can have 3 in a deck, but only one in play

A player, 6 March 2021 22:02

You can have 3 in your deck

A player, 6 March 2021 22:02

It's basically L5R's "legendary" rule. Can still slot multiples of the card in your deck but only one in play per player at a time

A player, 6 March 2021 22:05

Ok awesome thanks

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 6 March 2021 23:50

The Unique rule itself also changed, though the exact Edition in which it did escapes me, but it used to allow only one in play anywhere, and then it was changed to only one in play per player. So, Singular and Unique only differ in terms of deck construction by the most current Rules.

A player, 6 March 2021 23:56

Ok good to know!

A player, 6 March 2021 23:56

That's on par with mtg

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 7 March 2021 00:03

Just did a little research, and I believe the change to the Unique Rule happened as of Celestial Edition.

A player, 7 March 2021 03:59

Now that I think about it...I don't think I've ever encountered a situation where two players want to have the same unique in play besides Border keep and Bamboo Harvester. We never thought about it in all the years I played with my group.

A player, 7 March 2021 06:12

in the early days, mirror matches and racing for the clan swords.

A player, 7 March 2021 06:13

(or other strong clan-related uniques)

kempy_nezumi (not official), 7 March 2021 07:09

Wait, so Unique rule was for all cards, not only Personalitues? i'm pretty sure than in Lotus and Samurai it was for Personalities only.

saaam (not official), 7 March 2021 07:10

Unique rule was for everything.

A player, 7 March 2021 07:19

Yep

A player, 7 March 2021 07:20

It was kinda silly

saaam (not official), 7 March 2021 07:25

Yeah, but added another layer of strategy.

saaam (not official), 7 March 2021 07:25

And another layer of pure luck.

saaam (not official), 7 March 2021 07:25

Event-chasing, Item-chasing, etc.

saaam (not official), 7 March 2021 08:17

First to Kaagi's Journal!

A player, 7 March 2021 17:14

Haha, so my friends and I got to play for the first time in forever last night and I busted out kaagis journal!

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 7 March 2021 18:50

Wow; prophetic of Shiwan, there. Were you able to wreck faces with an untouchable unit, or were people packing anti-Ninja/Journal meta, like Doji Shizue Exp?

A player, 7 March 2021 19:31

We're playing with cards mostly through like diamond so it's an old school naga deck. Came out the gates hot with naga warlord and double naga followers wrecking provinces Haha

saaam (not official), 7 March 2021 19:32

There was some meta, but not too much. Kolat Duplicate became the go-to.

A player, 7 March 2021 19:42

Yes, my buddy also likes kolat instigator followed by a poison weapon

saaam (not official), 7 March 2021 19:44

Enh. Geisha Assassin is better.

saaam (not official), 7 March 2021 19:45

4FV, and you only spend 2G on it, with no Honour Loss.

A player, 7 March 2021 20:01

Yeah but instigator only 4 gold vs 10

A player, 7 March 2021 20:01

What's 4FV?

saaam (not official), 7 March 2021 20:30

4 Focus Value.

A player, 7 March 2021 20:40

Ah yes of course! Definitely a fan of assasin but 4gold cost is really efficient

saaam (not official), 7 March 2021 20:44

No, it's not 4G.

saaam (not official), 7 March 2021 20:44

Geisha Assassin is a * card.

A player, 7 March 2021 20:49

No sorry I meant instigator for 4 gold is really efficent and poisoned weapon can auto kill a 3 chi or less. My buddy used to use it all the time Haha

A player, 7 March 2021 20:53

Oh Haha I was confusing geisha assassin with kolat assassin! That's potentially very gold efficient as well

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 7 March 2021 21:16

Of course, neither the Instigator nor either Assassin action can target the guy with the Journal. Duplicate is a nice choice to counter it, apart from 1. it's an Event, so unreliable, 2. the fact the Journal might come back any time, and 3. boosting the heck out of the other guy's economy, especially having to hit a Naga Warlord out of Heart of the Shinomen; suddenly up to 6 Personalities in the deck are free (4 non-Uniques and the 2 Exp versions).

A player, 7 March 2021 21:22

Yeah, that's partly why it's in there for sure! The warlord was going to town! Veryyyyyy nostalgic game night

A player, 7 March 2021 21:42

So guys, Newer cards refer to attachments. Do attachments only mean weapons/armor or does this include followers?

Alex Jones (rules official), 7 March 2021 21:43

Attachments are * Items * Followers * Spells * Ancestors

A player, 7 March 2021 21:44

Ok coolio! Thank you!

A player, 11 March 2021 23:12

Hey can someone explain: Stand together

What happens if each opponent chooses not to lose 5 honor??

Answers on: Stand Together
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 11 March 2021 23:31

Nothing happens.

saaam (not official), 11 March 2021 23:32

Check the original printing, it clarifies it more than the present wording.

saaam (not official), 11 March 2021 23:32

And yeah. Reads like nothing happens.

saaam (not official), 11 March 2021 23:32

It's multiplayer-only, too, based on its functioning.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 11 March 2021 23:32

It's a multi-player only card, where a player other than you can choose to lose five Honor to smack a different player with a ten-Honor loss.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 11 March 2021 23:34

I suppose it could be slightly clearer in the Oracle if I wrote "If" instead of "After", but mechanically it's the same and more specific to triggered effect timing.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 11 March 2021 23:35

Also, it needed to specify a timing on when each player got to opt to take the 5 Honor loss.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 11 March 2021 23:35

With the classic wording, it was just like "up for grabs" with no clear timing.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 11 March 2021 23:39

Or, I suppose I could also write "After a player chooses to take a loss" rather than simply "After a player does," but the previous sentence was a choice between "does" or "does not" choose to lose 5 Honor, so I thought the trigger was clear enough based upon that. If no one does, there's no trigger.

saaam (not official), 11 March 2021 23:49

It's semantically unclear to me, but that might be me.

A player, 11 March 2021 23:58

Gotcha, well that's a shame! Thought I'd found a truly stinky honor loss option

saaam (not official), 12 March 2021 06:01

Hey, Oni no Kamu (both MRP from Clan War Saga and original from SL) don't say that he's Unique. However, the latest Oracle text does, but no mention of errata. Is he Unique?

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 12 March 2021 07:33

he was one of the early errata, always intended to be unique

kempy_nezumi (not official), 12 March 2021 08:18

Early? Theres 2 years gap between Shadowlands (misprint) and Clan War Saga reprints and it still had no Unique printed. Ive checked all those faq/rulings from 1997 to 2000 and theres no info about any errata for it.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 12:56

@kempy_nezumi Did you check the list of errata from Clan War era Rulebooks, like Emerald through Void/Coup; I think it's in there. Or do you only have access to the one in your Dropbox, which is just the Imperial one? I'm not sure it'd be in the Jade one you have in the dropbox either, because they might not have expected to reprint him AND screw up reprinting him at that time.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 12:58

I'm surprised and embarrassed the Oracle Notes section doesn't mention it, but on the other hand, I'm not THAT surprised and I'm frequently embarrassed. ;P

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 13:10

@kempy_nezumi I will concede that if you've scoured rulings post-CWS, then there's no easily-findable record that the leaving off of "Unique" was a mistake, since they DID manage to fix the title (might have been in an Imperial Herald?). But the more I think about it, I'm SURE the Clan War rulebooks' errata section mentioned both that the Shadowlands version is supposed to be named Kamu AND is Unique.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 13:12

And, let's be real, it was probably a mistake. looks at you, Yoritomo basic promo

saaam (not official), 12 March 2021 15:04

Yes, but later in the game, especially in IvE/20F, they started wholesale printing Experienced Personalities without the Unique keyword.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 15:19

Well, true, but as you said, that was waaaaaay later, well after the CWS reprints. I can assure you he IS Unique and was not intended to have his errata reversed; the highest likelihood (and I imagine must have been contemporarily communicated somehow) is they changed the title but forgot to change the keyword/trait line in the CWS reprint. The design decisions you mentioned immediately above were a completely different team and environment.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 15:27

Sorry I edited that about a billion times. πŸ˜›

A player, 12 March 2021 16:38

Yeah, Kamu was always errata'ed. The Design team in that period was almost dysfunctionally disorganized.

A player, 12 March 2021 16:39

they had a crappy wildly inaccurate spreadsheet they used to track different cards apparently, and I had the most accurate info out there (in Websune, the precursor to the Oracle).

A player, 12 March 2021 16:40

l5rsearch existed, but a lot of their stuff was scraped from older websune, and had typos and other issues i had fixed for a long time... it was a chaotic place.

A player, 12 March 2021 16:40

and all the AEG stuff was on one hard drive backed up with a tape system nobody knew how to use... so many things were lost when it died.

A player, 12 March 2021 16:41

All the above is why Bryan brought me in to write the Oracle

A player, 12 March 2021 16:42

anyway, if nobody has already, add that as an issue in the tracker, so it can be fixed (hopefully i'll have the editing stuff fixed up shortly)

A player, 12 March 2021 16:45

Here's my play copy still in sleeve from the clan war era

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 17:29

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 17:36

If I am, I'm one that can add to 14 on 4 dice TWENTY times!! πŸ˜›

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 17:43

@kempy_nezumi Incidentally, I've intentionally reversed the ruling in Bullet Point #5 on that list above by not including any text in the Oracle version that supports it. I can understand why DW ruled it that way in 97, but JA should not have upheld it in 2003, because the wording on Unexpected Allies changed in Gold Edition so that the player is explicitly who brings Kamu into play, not just the Event itself. I'm not sure if the 3-turn lifespan needs more clarity in Oracle text, per bullet #6, or if that ruling isn't consistent anymore either with the current CR on "counting things" or the definition of "turns from now" but I'm not looking into that right now. Maybe later. πŸ˜›

Alex Jones (rules official), 12 March 2021 18:07

Works for me.

A player, 12 March 2021 18:38

Rules question: I'm pretty sure I know the answer but thought it'd check: Can I use ghedai battle ability if he isn't assigned as an attacker? Like can I not assign him and move another unit with his ability?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 12 March 2021 18:41

No.

A player, 12 March 2021 18:41

K, that's what I thought

A player, 12 March 2021 18:41

Thanks!

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 18:51

@kempy_nezumi Point of fact, contemporarily to Gold Edition under the Rule of Relevance, Ghedai COULD use that ability from home. I made a universal decision when writing Oracle text to have the current Rule of Location which replaced the Rule of Relevance govern older cards, even if it changed their contemporary function. I'm thinking of maybe going back on that call, but one of the main reasons besides consistency and being able to read a card and understand how it works without consulting the Oracle for EVERYTHING (see how Beowulf got the "right" answer before even asking?), it would also involve going back and writing "Remote" on a LOT of abilities. Sooooo... I dunno. Just full disclosure here.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 12 March 2021 18:53

Ah, thanks for info. I'm noob when it comes to preLotus πŸ™‚

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 18:57

Rule of Location was introduced in Samurai; Lotus still used Relevance. πŸ˜‰

A player, 12 March 2021 18:58

@Brook Cunningham Totally. I get the consistency thing. To me though there would be an obvious difference between say ghedai doing his ability when at home vs. Radakast. It also makes some abilities like naga shujenja (which also should be able to use his ability when not present) and ghedai significantly less viable

Answers on: Radakast
A player, 12 March 2021 18:59

And forgive my constant references to naga cards as it's the first deck I remade since jumping back in Haha

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 19:05

Like I said, I'm leaning toward putting in the extra work, but Location was so much clearer and better a Rule than Relevance ever was, and there have to be lines where the Rules change the cards versus when the cards have to be changed via Oracle'd to work how they used to. Like, I can't write a trait on every pre-Ivory Conqueror, forbidding him from straightening if any other Conqueror is doing it too, or on every Duelist of a certain age, giving him the first option to focus if his Chi is lower or equal, rather than just winning ties.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 19:05

I mean, I COULD... but, like, nah bro. πŸ˜›

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 19:06

Fun Fact tangental to the above: The first "Duelist"-keyworded card in L5R was Bayushi Yokuan in Scorpion Clan Coup. The keyword meant absolutely nothing until Lotus Edition.

A player, 12 March 2021 19:14

Haha, totally! No problem at all. I think my friends and I will just do our own rule set on those ones

A player, 12 March 2021 19:15

Duelist ability=can focus befor the duel??

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 19:16

When Duelist was first made a Rules-bearing keyword in Lotus Edition, it allowed a Duelist entering a duel against someone of higher or equal Chi to Focus first, even if they initiated the challenge. I forget when it changed to "wins ties against non-Duelists".

A player, 12 March 2021 19:20

Ah ok, so they made it to ONLY wins ties or both? That's weird too because doji reju is one of my old school favorites and the reprints didn't appear to make him a duelist

Answers on: Doji Reju
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 19:23

It started as "focus first" then changed to "wins ties". Was never both. Also, Reju was never reprinted after it became "wins ties". Also-also, Reju is slightly better because he wins ALL ties, but Duelists only win ties against non-Duelists.

A player, 12 March 2021 19:25

Ok good to know! I loved rocking karmic strike crane style

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 19:26

I feel like I've mentioned this before, but FYI, the Ivory Edition MRP of Kharmic Strike makes both LOSE, not tie, so it no longer combos with Reju in an environ where you're using MRPs versus contemporaneous wordings.

A player, 12 March 2021 19:27

Haha, what!??? Was that in response to duelist keyword?? Why would they nix such a niche card that I literally only played in crane

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 19:28

I argued against it, but the Lead Designer was very keen on the change for no reason that I can rightly recall.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 19:29

Probably to prevent Duelists abusing it, though, yeah, although they could've timed it to resolve after or cancel out the Duelist advantage. Something to preserve it for Open format and Reju, but no.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 19:30

I guess it makes it much clearer how it interacts with Duelists, in any event.

A player, 12 March 2021 19:30

Lol! Guy lost in the finals to crane dueling honor run and takes it out on the whole world

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 19:30

Good old Reju.

A player, 12 March 2021 19:57

there's a lot of oddness there we should have a jam session to figure out how to best represent all of the arcs without a ton of referencing the oracle just to make sure.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 March 2021 21:54

Sure! I look forward to going over where and how I drew the initial "lines" when I first did all the Oracle text, and the situations I actually chose to apply the Legacy/Oracle-exclusive "Remote" keyword, even though I didn't for such cards as Ghedai or Naga Shugenja. Also, thinking on it further, the situations described may be soluable by putting some more optional, arc-simulation Rules into the Legacy document whenever you host it, rather than having to rewrite each individual card.

saaam (not official), 13 March 2021 03:52

Mmm, Doji Reju and Karmic Strike. Those were fun times.

A player, 14 March 2021 08:47

Wait, AEG requested that you create the Oracle? That's super cool. I wish they had enough foresight to develoop an online game system.

saaam (not official), 14 March 2021 08:48

Old5R was really not conducive to being turned into an online game. At least not one where rules are enforced by the software and you can use it for tournaments, etc.

A player, 14 March 2021 08:49

@saaam is right, back then the both the L5R system didn't translate well, and the software wasn't as advanced as it is now.

saaam (not official), 14 March 2021 08:54

That, too. So many cards would have taken custom programming just for them.

A player, 14 March 2021 09:04

Many many react windows

saaam (not official), 14 March 2021 09:04

And the whole canceling thing, too.

saaam (not official), 14 March 2021 09:05

And not having a stack, etc., makes programming it a lot harder.

A player, 14 March 2021 09:06

yeah oracle was a project that needed to happen and had been requested for many years.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 14 March 2021 11:59

some people think that ivory changes (interrupt window instead reactions) was a step to make digital make version. hiring Drew to make some changes in sun and moon and using it to playtest, was second step.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 March 2021 14:39

"Some people think"? ;P I can confirm that, while it might not have been the sole motivator behind things like Interrupts and Gold Pooling (making the game more player-friendy may well have been another), the fact that such changes would make a digitial version easier to program was definitely a consideration when deciding to implement them. I wonder, how many people noticed/remember that design was also getting rid of Limited actions as of Onyx; every Action-phase ability was going to be Open. If you're someone who didn't notice or don't believe me, go to the Oracle and narrow the search to "Onyx Edition" legality (which will pull everything from 20F, Thunderous Acclaim, and Evil Portents), then type "Limited" in the Text search; see what you get. πŸ˜‰

A player, 14 March 2021 16:25

I remember being sad about that. It felt like the game was leaning heavily towards more battle support and less non-combat activity to me. (Bushido brawl.)

A player, 14 March 2021 16:26

<- Exclusively defensive Dragon honor player.

Alex Jones (rules official), 14 March 2021 16:28

Well, except that you effectively still had Limited actions.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 March 2021 16:29

Yeah. It wasn't a shift away from the Action phase wholesale, it was just a shift away from distinguishing YOUR turn actions from everyone else's. So, all action-phase abilities were for every player on every turn, full stop.

A player, 14 March 2021 16:31

Yeah I knew that logically, but it felt wrong all the same. XD

Alex Jones (rules official), 14 March 2021 16:31

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 March 2021 16:31

Haha. Also that. πŸ˜›

Alex Jones (rules official), 14 March 2021 16:34

There's only 4 instances of "If it is your turn" in the Onyx PDF, however - and one is on an Interrupt, and one says "If it is your turn or you control a Courtier..."

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 March 2021 16:36

I mean, growing pains, right? Were there any more "If it is your turn" Opens I wonder, in 20F, TA, or EP? Easy to check; gotta love the Oracle.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 March 2021 16:42

Turns out, just one. Togashi Yokuni from S:CW. Not as easy as I thought though, because the Oracle pulled every instance of all five of those words in ANY order. I thought you could put quotes around them to narrow it to the specific order, but no. Maybe brackets? Or maybe I imagined that function.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 14 March 2021 18:46

have questions about deathseeker sensei from roj

kempy_nezumi (not official), 14 March 2021 18:47

a) will this proclaim from trait breaks once-per-turn limit proclaiming and every deathseeker destroyed could net me honor?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 14 March 2021 18:47

b) what happens when deathseeker dies on my ops turn?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 14 March 2021 18:49

another question about this stronghold ability:

kempy_nezumi (not official), 14 March 2021 18:49

can i use it on my ops turn to use kharmic on any card?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 March 2021 19:00

No idea about the Deathseeker stuff; Rules never looked at RoJ, but maybe someone who PT'd would know, or Gilador might just because "Lion". ;P Also, for the Phoenix box, I don't know if Kharmic MAY have changed to pure "Open:" in Onyx or "Open: If it is your turn," (per our discussion above of Limited going away). In the latter case, and by current RAW, I'd say that despite the Stronghold being templated as simply "Open" it doesn't inherently override restrictions on WHEN you can use the Kharmic ability, only cost and targeting, but all that said, we never got as far in Onyx discussions/notes to clarify its intent, so again PT may be the better source if you want to know how it's "supposed" to work, rather than how it works as written.

Alex Jones (rules official), 14 March 2021 22:47

We never got to do Rules stuff on RoJ, so I don't know what the intent was on the Deathseeker Sensei.

Alex Jones (rules official), 14 March 2021 22:48

As written, it would seem that you could Proclaim any number of them in one turn, but I don't know what Bryan wanted.

Alex Jones (rules official), 14 March 2021 22:48

Either way, it wouldn't have gone to print with that text.

A player, 28 March 2021 20:07

Hey guys, Looking at making a shiro no soshi, ninja deck. Wondering if the face down personality with ninjutsu is a scorpion is he considered a member of my clan if I bring him out as a facedown ninja?

Answers on: Shiro no Soshi
kempy_nezumi (not official), 28 March 2021 20:49

I suppose when facedown he has no your clan alignment when you play in Lotus environment, in Legacy i think he has Ninja faction clan alignment

Alex Jones (rules official), 28 March 2021 21:01

They're 2/3 -/4/0 Ninja, right?

Alex Jones (rules official), 28 March 2021 21:01

So, yes, unaligned in Lotus, Ninja aligned in Open/Legacy

A player, 28 March 2021 21:07

Ok thanks guys!

When facedown, Ninjutsu Personalities look just like this:

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 29 March 2021 01:30

When I ran a Ninjutsu deck, I had several of these which I put on top of my facedown Ninja to help me and my opponents. It especially helped to determine which cards I had and had not looked at in my Provinces.

A player, 29 March 2021 01:40

Awesome, thank you!

A player, 29 March 2021 15:36

Question: if a personality becomes dishonored and his follower has an honour requirement? What happens?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 29 March 2021 15:51

nothing. honor requirements are checked only during attaching/equiping

A player, 29 March 2021 15:52

Ok thanks!

A player, 29 March 2021 15:53

One more: Do all your units need to be naval to utilize naval? Or do you just need more naval than the defender?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 29 March 2021 15:56

Naval was changing through editions, if you sticked to Emperor:

kempy_nezumi (not official), 29 March 2021 15:56

(Naval Invasion) Reaction: After engaging, once per battle, if you are the Attacker and your current army has more Naval cards than the side oppos¬ing it, choose your performing Naval Personality: You have the first opportunity to take a Battle action, which he must perform.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 29 March 2021 15:57

And you don't need to have all units in army to be Naval, it could be only one (but still more than OP)

A player, 29 March 2021 15:58

Ah ok, that is a lot simpler. So by "he must perform"... does that only mean an action printed on a card in his unit?

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 15:59

Actions can be performed by Personalities and Followers.

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 15:59

An action from an ability on a Personality is performed by the Personality

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 16:00

An action from an ability on a Follower is performed by the Follower

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 16:00

An action from an ability on an Item or Spell is performed by the Personality

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 16:00

I forget which of those applies to Ancestors.

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 16:02

An action from an ability on a Strategy (or Ring, or other card not in unit, or in the rulebook) is performed by a Personality or Follower if it says it is (in Emperor).

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 16:02

Before Emperor, there was no explicit performing, so things were a little woolly.

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 16:03

We finally persuaded Reese that performing should be explicit in Emperor - and then he decided to do away with the concept entirely in Ivory.

A player, 29 March 2021 16:04

Interesting. So basically if a card "targets" my unit to perform it, it could be considered his action? Like a duel for example?

Answers on: Deadly Ground
A player, 29 March 2021 16:05

But would still rule out terrains? E.g., deadly ground

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 16:05

No

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 16:05

Well, it depends on the edition.

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 16:06

The rules for performing pre-Emperor were somewhat woolly.

saaam (not official), 29 March 2021 16:18

Playing a terrain isn't performed, per se.

saaam (not official), 29 March 2021 16:19

But yeah. Wording and rules are... varied by edition.

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 16:25

IIRC, pre-Emperor, if an ability on card not in a unit targets your Personality or Follower in the constraints block (ie, the bit between the bold-face colon and the second colon, if there is one), then it's performed by that Personality or Follower.

Alex Jones (rules official), 29 March 2021 16:27

That only applies to sets beginning with Dawn of the Empire, which is when the constraints block was introduced.

A player, 29 March 2021 16:37

Ok thanks guys!

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 30 March 2021 02:09

All the rewordings of Strategies in the Oracle should be explicit about their performer. Some say "choose" when they should say "target", but the "performing" aspect should be correct.

A player, 30 March 2021 03:04

Ok cool! I'll take a look in Oracle for those

A player, 30 March 2021 16:50

I already know but just double checking. Shadowlands samurai, with 0 personal honor (e.g. moto tsume) are not inherently dishonored correct?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 30 March 2021 16:59

Nope.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 30 March 2021 16:59

0PH isn't inherently = dishonorable

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 30 March 2021 17:01

Dishonorable is a separate state, signified by turning the Personality upside-down, that includes with it the fact that the Personality has a max PH of 0 while dishonorable.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 30 March 2021 17:02

So, long and short, all dishonorable Personalities are 0PH, but not all 0PH Personalities are dishonorable.

saaam (not official), 30 March 2021 17:03

And that's why Storm Heart was so, so broken.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 30 March 2021 17:13

@saaam I think they may have fixed that either within Storm Heart's lifetime or shortly after? Like, wasn't the issue that Focusing at the time was a temporary bonus to the stat, so a dishonorable Personality in a duel could never even Focus his way up, because his max 0PH would always tank him? At some point they changed duels so that Focuses + Stat = Compare Resolution Scores, rather than just Stat + Focus bonuses = Compare Stats. I could look up exactly when that changed, but... don't wanna. πŸ˜›

A player, 30 March 2021 17:36

Thanks! That's what I thought but wanted to clarify

saaam (not official), 30 March 2021 18:18

Nah, Storm Heart was insta-kill for Dishonoured peeps.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 30 March 2021 18:20

Well, I know they fixed it at some point. Couldn't recall if it was in Storm Heart's legality life or not.

A player, 30 March 2021 18:23

I'd never seen that card before. It's good as is, let alone of they couldn't focus up
