do you know when gold-bugged A New Wall was released and why it doesn't have Gold legality in Oracle?

A player, 15 September 2024 20:45

As a couple people on Facebook have already answered you it was never actually gold legal.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 September 2024 20:49 · in reply

There are various answers and opinions. I just wanted to know if it was available in public during those two months between GenCon and Diamond release.

A player, 15 September 2024 20:53

It was released in a promo pack But I think it was originally slated to be released in gold ~FOU iirc. Now that I'm talking about it, it may have actually been in the diamond box of greed that were shipped out with the pre-release for DE. If you're trying to include it in the gold tournament I definitely wouldn't. Even if it were released in the days between Gen Con and Diamond release It wouldn't have met the criteria to be legal in gold

A player, 15 September 2024 20:54

Box of greed triggers some memories.... That could be it

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 September 2024 20:59 · in reply

"Even if it were released in the days between Gen Con and Diamond release It wouldn't have met the criteria to be legal in gold"?

Why? AFAIK AEG had had a one-month grace period for booster expansions and probably same for promos (except promos that had written legality date). That's why multiple last double-bugged expansions had only a 1 month of "current legality" before new base set was released. Whole idea of our retro tournaments is to play them like they were organized a day before new edition. So that's why i am curious about this ANW case.

A player, 15 September 2024 21:01

is there a specific ruling somewhere that says its not gold legal?

Because this says that it is

A player, 15 September 2024 21:03

No, it says there is a Gold-bugged version.

A player, 15 September 2024 21:03

the Oracle entry does not list gold legality.

A player, 15 September 2024 21:04

Can anyone read that set into?

A player, 15 September 2024 21:04

Info

A player, 15 September 2024 21:06

i thought that every edition had the release of promos throughout, and then a final re-release of all promos at the end?

Alex Jones (rules official), 15 September 2024 21:06

No

A player, 15 September 2024 21:06

All the promos were never released

A player, 15 September 2024 21:08

Plenty of promo cards that were in the 1 month of legality window are correctly labeled in OoV, I would trust that

A player, 15 September 2024 21:08

admittedly, i stopped tournamenting with hidden emperor. alot of people at our store didn't stop, and i recall us getting a huge infusion of promos at the end of each edition up until... rftt?

A player, 15 September 2024 21:09

maybe our store just had clout

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 September 2024 21:09 · in reply

in late editions there were so called christmas packs/compilations but they probably never got all released earlier OP promos together

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 September 2024 21:09

only most of them

A player, 15 September 2024 21:09

it may have been the store staff getting rid of what they had left as well

A player, 15 September 2024 21:10

Oh that wasn't all the promos, they just liked to support their stores and would do periodic drops. My shop in MA constantly got support like that from AEG. But there were always unreleased promos

For everything they did wrong they did OP and retail support right in those days

A player, 15 September 2024 21:11

ah, so it wasn't some kind of official thing. just "here's what's laying around the warehouse. here you go bro"

A player, 15 September 2024 21:11

xD

A player, 15 September 2024 21:12

Yeah that's what it seemed like πŸ˜‚

A player, 15 September 2024 21:13

did they stick with the poster they made way back in the day "No card ever banned"?

A player, 15 September 2024 21:14

For a long while even after they banned the Spirit StrongholdπŸ˜‚

A player, 15 September 2024 21:15

i can understand for storyline tourney reasons why they would say "this is not tournament legal"

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 September 2024 21:15 · in reply

Spirit Stronghold wasnt banned in Jade. It was banned in Open format only.

A player, 15 September 2024 21:15

I think it was partially also because the playtesters were also some of the most competitive players in the scene and they wanted to give people a chance to compete against them

A player, 15 September 2024 21:15 · in reply

I'm very aware

A player, 15 September 2024 21:16

But they still banned it in their open format and kept saying they never banned a card πŸ˜‚

A player, 15 September 2024 21:17

Although to be fair they never supported open very well to begin with

A player, 15 September 2024 21:19

well, i mean, 6 provinces and card draw mechanics. everyone would have been playing that and LSD

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 September 2024 21:20 · in reply

hmm, this never-banned ad was released around Emerald sub-base set. so like 3 years before printing spirit stronghold

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 September 2024 21:20

that was really early stuff

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 September 2024 21:20

but afaik it wasnt true even at this point

A player, 15 September 2024 21:21

there were 1 or two that were restricted from tourney play after that, iirc

A player, 15 September 2024 21:22

not too long either

A player, 15 September 2024 21:22 · in reply

Yeah they ran various versions of that ad campaign until Samurai

A player, 15 September 2024 21:23

They had lots of erratas was how they got around that

A player, 15 September 2024 21:24

Nothing banned nothing restricted however 30 of the cards in each set function differently now than how they're printed πŸ˜‚

A player, 15 September 2024 21:25

didn't some of the errata come from on the floor rulings by judges?

A player, 15 September 2024 21:25

i know some errata was due to misprinting as well

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 September 2024 21:29

AEG/WotC were releasing constantly official FAQ/Errata stuff. Some people were gathering them, along with answers from various sources (mailing lists, posts, imperial herald) into one document. We have access to those files. Oldest one i have is from 1997.

A player, 15 September 2024 21:29

I'm sure a lot propagated up that way.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 September 2024 21:30

Later arrived whole website and forum with official compilations. And since Emperor edition there was Oracle of the Void.

Imperial Heralds had card corrections in them iirc as well prior to that I'll have to double check

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 September 2024 21:32 · in reply

There were errata and clarifications in starter inserts or rulebooks. Every expansion had starter that had rulebook that added or explained something new.

A player, 15 September 2024 21:33

Right, prior to that there was an article in the imperial heralds oddly enough called the Oracle of the void

A player, 15 September 2024 21:40

This game definitely has one of the most entertaining and complex histories of any game, or IP I feel like.

A player, 15 September 2024 21:41

Both fictional and how the games tied to the IP were run.

A player, 17 September 2024 18:28

This has been updated in the Oracle: https://oracleofthevoid.com/#game=l5r,#cardid=58 The Gold-bugged version of this card was released extremely late in the Gold arc: After major events were already over for the season. Most Gold decks that ever saw play during the arc did not have access to this card. However, since there was a Gold version of the card, it is technically legal. Anyone running a tournament can choose to represent a snapshot in time - disallowing this card, or a "Gold-legal" including this card.

A player, 17 September 2024 18:30

Does anyone have a repository of all the old imperial heralds?

saaam (not official), 17 September 2024 19:05

Hmm. There was a site that had a few of them scanned, but I can't recall the name.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 September 2024 19:13

saaam (not official), 17 September 2024 20:13

Looks like the S3 bucket holding them was purged. Way Back Machine has not stored a copy of those PDFs. 😦

A player, 18 September 2024 02:11

Were clan decks in the Clan Wars totally fixed, or was it a combination of some of the cards being fixed, with the rest filled in randomly? I think I remember it being the latter. Are the contents of Imperial, Emerald, or Obsidian clan decks listed anywhere. It looks like I can determine what cards were fixed in the sets in the OracleoftheVoid db, but not what was fixed in each deck.

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 18 September 2024 02:39

most of the decks were fixed, with copies of common/uncommon clan-appropriate people from various sets, unaligneds, and a random-looking assortment of holdings, with certain cards unique to each deck fixed (such as the Ancestral Swords in the Imperial starters); a certain percentage of each deck had random cards, usually uncommons and a couple of rares

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 18 September 2024 02:39

they were not well-designed for out-of-the-box play

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 18 September 2024 02:45

basically you could buy multiple copies of the same 60-card starter and get 40-50 identical cards from one to the next

A player, 18 September 2024 02:46

That is what I remembered. You could possibly get a rare or two in a deck, but not near as many as you would buying boosters.

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 18 September 2024 02:47

when they were ~$3 for boosters and ~$10 for starters, you were best off buying boosters

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 18 September 2024 02:47

get one copy of the starter for the fixed card you needed

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 18 September 2024 02:47

which was almost always Unique

A player, 18 September 2024 03:45 · in reply

saaam (not official), 18 September 2024 06:50

A player, 25 September 2024 03:37

Taking a walk down memory lane, looking at old deck designs from the 90s. Can someone explain what a "control" deck is supposed to be? Also, I don't remember ever seeing someone win with an Enlightenment Victory during my playing time. Were there early deck designs for that sort of win?

A player, 25 September 2024 03:38

Control = locking down their personalities

A player, 25 September 2024 03:39 · in reply

Does that mean keeping them from being able to commit to battles, dueling - or just anything?

A player, 25 September 2024 03:39

Enlightenment is difficult to make competitive. But yes there are decks.

A player, 25 September 2024 03:40

Usually bowing or killing them.

saaam (not official), 25 September 2024 03:40

Well, control can be locking down people, or killing them, or preventing them from entering play, but, yeah. Locking them down, loosely.

saaam (not official), 25 September 2024 03:40

_Yogo Asami has entered the chat._

saaam (not official), 25 September 2024 03:41

Enlightenment was super duper easy and fun when Finding the Harmony got printed, pre-MRP. πŸ˜„

A player, 25 September 2024 03:42

Yeah, there was that narrow band.

A player, 25 September 2024 03:43

I ran an enlightenment tourney once... Set it up with a point system to weight enlightenment more than the other victories. It was pretty fun

saaam (not official), 25 September 2024 03:43

Hmm. That's a really neat idea, actually.

A player, 25 September 2024 03:45

I've had a little bit of luck searching/finding old Clan War era deck designs, but nothing for Enlightenment decks. If someone can point me to a resource that might have that, I would appreciate it.

A player, 25 September 2024 03:46

So many points for a win, and so many points for each ring played (in a way contributing to a victory). Where if you got an elemental victory it was about double the regular wins.

A player, 25 September 2024 03:47

Or maybe I had points for honor, provinces, and rings, with a bonus for an elemental victory

A player, 25 September 2024 03:47

Been too long at this point

A player, 25 September 2024 03:48

But I basically ran Swiss then totaled up points on the side for determining the actual winner

A player, 25 September 2024 03:48

And the winner definitely was the person who got the most elemental victories.

A player, 25 September 2024 13:09

I often felt the entire point of the Brotherhood decks were because it was way too easy to corrupt the Phoenix and get a quick Enlightenment victory. Even then, it felt like the Dragon or Phoenix were better at it, since the Brotherhood cards seemed more concerned about rewarding you for having Rings instead of really helping them get into play.

A player, 25 September 2024 13:10

The various Acolytes helped, but too much finagling sometimes.

A player, 25 September 2024 14:20

I think the biggest problem with enlightenment was/is how easy it was to telegraph what the person going for enlightenment was/is doing. I remember especially against honor who didn't need to attack you, it being an almost auto loss.

In that aspect I liked how they did enlightenment in LBS because there were more than just the 5 specific ways to achieve it.

saaam (not official), 25 September 2024 15:40

Don't forget Shadowlands Enlightenment. Or Ninja Enlightenment. πŸ˜„

Easily countered. Bow for the favor

A player, 25 September 2024 16:31

Sac them to sacrificial altar, there were a lot of counter plays that non-military decks were already playing for other reasons that just naturally countered enlightenment

A player, 25 September 2024 16:32

At least in Clan War and Jade era

A player, 25 September 2024 16:33

We tried so hard to put together a Kokujin enlightenment deck for gencon '05... Especially after infinite Onis was erratd right before GenCon. Just too easy to counter in every era

kempy_nezumi (not official), 25 September 2024 17:24

saaam (not official), 25 September 2024 17:28

That was Monk.

saaam (not official), 25 September 2024 17:28

Rather, that Stronghold is for Monk.

saaam (not official), 25 September 2024 17:28

And yeah, it worked well before Finding the Harmony hit.

saaam (not official), 25 September 2024 17:29

Since you could get around your most challenging Ring.

saaam (not official), 25 September 2024 17:30

This is also part of what annoyed and pushed away a lot of older players once GE and onward hit: a lot of independent Clans/Factions got "rolled up" into one of the Great Clans.

A player, 25 September 2024 17:53

When did the rule about "Rings not put into play by their own rules text do not apply to victory conditions" come into play?

saaam (not official), 25 September 2024 17:55

Gold? Diamond? Later?

saaam (not official), 25 September 2024 17:55
