Hello all. Is there a set of L5R that is relatively self contained? I own the 9 starters from Twenty Festivals, but I'm incredibly enamored by the story of the original sets that came out in the first two years of the game. The downside to that, is it's incredibly costly and rare. Where would be the best place to look to get some of the older cards before the game "changed?"

saaam (not official), 15 August 2024 15:54

That's a tough question. But you can find people selling off entire collections, cheaply, if you can afford the shipping by weight.

saaam (not official), 15 August 2024 15:54

Probably the easiest way.

saaam (not official), 15 August 2024 15:55

Because L5R was always in arcs, which spanned multiple core sets and usually around half a dozen expansions.

A player, 15 August 2024 17:12

when you buy a collection, usually those folks collect only within a particular arc - I just picked up a collection that was mostly Imperial-Jade, for instance, while my own collection (prior to that) is mainly Samurai and Emperor -- the trickier thing is that it is very easy with L5R to get more cards than you really need - so I saw an Emperor lot the other day, and I thought about it, but I was 90% sure that the majority of it would repeat what I have...

... and at some juncture you use CatOne or DocAngst or Imperial Auction Block and buy singles 😂

A player, 15 August 2024 17:16

And for those of us who own those sites, some of the duplication is pretty darn extreme.

A player, 15 August 2024 18:11

I might need to start my own site.... there's a pile on the side of my room of "copies copies copies what to do with them?" (but it's only in the 300-400 card range for now)

A player, 15 August 2024 18:11

I believe I have 20+ copies of this card alone:

A player, 15 August 2024 18:13

(but don't ask how many copies of Stables I have...)

A player, 15 August 2024 18:44

Yeah I have triple digits in some promos of that era

A player, 15 August 2024 18:44

Well.. several promos of that era

A player, 15 August 2024 19:11

So question how did people get their promos? I bought a ton of ivory and 20f arc boosters after the game ended, but I read thru decklist and I couldn't figure out why I was missing so many popular cards. It just dawned on me the other day they were all promos. I didn't realize promos were so prevalent in the game how were you supposed to get them?

A player, 15 August 2024 19:13

they are huge in L5R - sometimes folks say that L5R released almost a full set worth of promos each arc...

A player, 15 August 2024 19:13

Going to events, herald subscription

A player, 15 August 2024 19:13

koku!!!

A player, 15 August 2024 19:14

Some of the big events sets they sold on the web (sometimes cash, sometimes koku)

A player, 15 August 2024 19:17

Read the notes on Oracle for each promo

A player, 15 August 2024 19:20

I was a crazy collector... My price for writing the Oracle originally was to get every card released

A player, 15 August 2024 19:20

Because I was tired of chasing promos

A player, 15 August 2024 19:36

I so I actually used the website to print proxy promos, so big time thank you!!!! I'm in the process of trying to deck build now and get a better understanding of the game, reading thru alot of the promos I've found so far is helping me understand deck building much more

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 August 2024 19:45 · in reply

Since Ivory edition all organized play promos were reprints of older cards with new art and updated wording to Ivory template.

A player, 15 August 2024 19:52

That's cool, I'll have to sift thru my old cards see if I have any that got a reprint, I have old imperial thru hidden emperor, then huge gap, ivory and 20f

A player, 15 August 2024 19:54

I'm looking at getting some emperor edition stuff, what is with bamboo harvester or border keep in every deck during emperor? I saw promos in ivory but never really saw them in lists

A player, 15 August 2024 19:54 · in reply

I became a Tournament Organizer for Android: Netrunner so I could get playsets of the promos.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 August 2024 20:01 · in reply

Becasue those cards were released in Forgotten Legacy set, available directly from AEG.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 August 2024 20:02

I mean experienced versions. Basic BK and BH were available in every Celestial and Emperor starter as fixed cards.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 August 2024 20:03

Because in EE and CE, you had to start with 1 or both of them.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 August 2024 20:03

That's how the game resources just worked throughout those editions.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 August 2024 20:05

They were basic starting Holdings, like your Stronghold, and in lieu of Legacy Holdings.

A player, 15 August 2024 20:05

Ahhh, I was eying getting the gemppuku starters and such and start building so emperor edition, but first I'm going to rebuild my ivory and 20f decks using promos

A player, 15 August 2024 20:26

Yeah, if your focus is to play IRL games, I would stick with one arc at a time, cause every arc feels radically different from the others. I recently ran Crane in Samurai and Crane in Emperor and gosh those felt like radically different things, even though they had the same basic strategy!

A player, 15 August 2024 20:27

Where do I go to play dishonor?? As a kid I always wanted to play dishonor and from what I've seen it's super hard to do in ivory and 20f

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 15 August 2024 20:32

Celestial and Emperor (and Onyx) all have good dishonor options within the modern era arcs

A player, 15 August 2024 20:40 · in reply

Best. Game. Ever.

A player, 15 August 2024 20:43

It was awfully fun selling nine Jackson Howards for $30 each.

A player, 15 August 2024 21:03

Man, I wish I didn't sell my complete collection. The prices are crazy now.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 15 August 2024 21:17 · in reply

Same for Samurai.

A player, 15 August 2024 21:17

Emperor dishonor is so fun — and you’ve got a lot of options for it! there’s even a Phoenix who dishonors things!!

I think once I sort out my Ivory and 20f I'm going to move up to Emperor edition for a different meta. I know scorpion can dishonor in ivory and there is some yasuki dishonor too, I'm going to have to see how the mechanics work in a dishonor unfriendly environment before moving into a more dishonor friendly environment

A player, 16 August 2024 14:51 · in reply

It might help to focus on the side of the story you find the most fascinating, so you don't spread your effort everywhere.

The Scorpion Clan Coup? The Clan War? The Destroyer War? You can find a quick synopsis of those stories on the back of 20F Gates of the Second City strongholds.

Is it the relics and the stories behind them? I find the Ancestral gear through the years awesome. (I like items in pretty much every game; I haven't played MtG since Mirage but sometimes grab an artifact I like.)

Is it a Clan? The story of that Clan? Like the best Clan of them all, the Scorpion?

A player, 16 August 2024 14:53

I only suggest this from a card POV, because otherwise you might have a bunch of half-collections.

A player, 16 August 2024 14:55

If it's not the cards but the storyline of the early sets, I recommend checking out the book The Time of the Void, AEG3033. It's a full lore book from the Shadowlands to Time of the Void sets, and you can find copies on ebay from $20-$40.

A player, 16 August 2024 14:57

Also, it's out of print, so I would never tell someone that you can find a full pdf on Scribd, because that would be something perhaps dubious.

A player, 16 August 2024 14:57

some of us - I'm not going to name any names (but it's me) - read the L5R wiki for fun, and then go and compare with my TTRPG sourcebooks to compare lore between them, as though I can do IRL historical work on fictional histories

A player, 16 August 2024 14:58

(like, for instance, the moment I realized that EDGE's Adventures in Rokugan lists the Nezumi lifespan as ... less than 10 years... in stark contradiction to what is stated in other sourcebooks)

A player, 16 August 2024 15:00

I might have a couch reading shelf...
