Ronin was a cancelled Activision/WotC L5R Diablo clone

Polling Discord: my friends and I have ALWAYS felt that a great format for L5R is “Old Backs Only” ……everything that has the Old design is Legal in this format we have created. It just seems like a natural block. Curious if anyone else plays this format we call it OBO for Old Back Only. Thx guys and I look forward to the discussion!

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 June 2024 20:13 · in reply

That format as you describe it is basically just Open before the final Jade Arc Expansion. Most people who prefer a similar environment will just play with the final expansion too anyway and play "Clan War through Jade Arcs" combined, or play Jade Extended, which is mostly that but without Clan War Spells, Events, or Personalities who didn't get Experienced or reprinted in Jade.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 June 2024 20:16

Incidentally, "Open but without the last expansion of Jade" was the exact environment of the final Jade storyline tournament at GenCon 2000, a few months before Spirit Wars released.

A player, 14 June 2024 20:18

Ah, I see…..makes sense. What makes OBO super attractive to us is that we don’t need to get caught up in knowing the sets - if it’s Old Back it’s legal! Very fun. Even have the cards from Heroes of Ruk bc they are OB…

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 June 2024 20:22 · in reply

Fair. By the same token, you could include the final Jade set and still not have to know anything about sets and play by the fronts instead of the backs: "if the expansion is denoted by the card border and not by little letters next to the artist credit". But then you'd have to sleeve some. 😛

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 June 2024 20:24

Although, if you're not sleeving 30 year old cards to play with them, you're kind of a monster anyway. 😉

A player, 14 June 2024 20:29

Haha fair point. Appreciate the comments looking forward to what others think.

A player, 14 June 2024 20:29

The OBO games have been awesome. Lots of parity which I bet others wouldn’t think during that era …

A player, 14 June 2024 20:30

It's a better format compared to strict Clan Wars. Larger cardpool, more viable clans, better Holdings.

A player, 14 June 2024 20:31

Unicorn doesn't suck that much.

A player, 14 June 2024 20:44 · in reply

What’s CW Format?

A player, 14 June 2024 20:46

Imperial to Scorp. Coup.

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 04:55

That's sounds an awful lot like Open.

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 04:55

Which was Clan Wars + whatever Jade Arc sets had been printed.

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 04:55

It was pretty unhinged, too.

A player, 15 June 2024 10:25 · in reply

What made it unhinged? Curious

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 June 2024 10:53 · in reply

I did say that already above. 😛 And, it wasn't all that unhinged, at least not by AEG standards at the time; as I also said above, "Open without Spirit Wars" (because it hadn't released yet) was the format they chose for the final Jade Arc storyline tournament at GenCon 2000, "Battle at Oblivion's Gate".

A player, 15 June 2024 15:17 · in reply

Interesting.

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 16:49

Unhinged in the way that you had a new arc's worth of cards, but also the previous one, which included L5R's "Power Nine" or what-have-you, like Evil Portents, Shinsei's Shrine, Wedge, the Clan Swords, and a few other busted things.

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 16:49

And yeah, relatively-speaking, it wasn't that unhinged. However, at the time, it was a thing, with a lot of grumbly players who couldn't get their hands on the earier Clan Wars power cards.

A player, 15 June 2024 16:53

Y'all clearly trauma blocked Crane THC 😂

A player, 15 June 2024 16:53

Akuma 2nd turn 2 province pops also

A player, 15 June 2024 16:54

Extended Jade and Open were unhinged af

A player, 15 June 2024 16:54

Lol

A player, 15 June 2024 16:57

The other night I pulled off the Akuma turn 1, turn 2 attack, pop province 1, rally, sup tactics, pop province 2, rally, Sup tactics, pop province 3.

Proceed to lose friends phase

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 17:01

Uhh.

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 17:01

Sub Tacs who to where?

A player, 15 June 2024 17:01 · in reply

I don’t think the Clan Swords are broken or OP by any means - everyone can get one but yeah it’s a race to get yours out first ..

A player, 15 June 2024 17:01 · in reply

Was wondering that as well

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 17:01

Dropping the Clan Sword in an Honour mirror-match made the game half the time by itself.

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 17:02

In Military, less big of a swing, unless you had a ton of weenies out.

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 17:02

I hope you weren't SupTaxing from your Fief back into a Battle.

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 17:08

Now, Turn 1 Akuma, Turn 2 Attack/Province, and then resolve the next Battle and playing Forced March to make Akuma crush a 2nd Province is totally viable.

A player, 15 June 2024 17:11

Sorry accessible terrain (my brain tied into counter to the card. 🤷) but now that I'm thinking through it that doesn't itself create presence is action does so I guess I cheated... Whoops

Answers on: Accessible Terrain
saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 17:12

No, Accessible Terrain absolutely lets you do that. Either move in from another Province, or from your Fief.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 June 2024 17:12 · in reply

Accessible is "Absent".

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 17:12

However, there's a cardinal rule about a Personality not being able to be in another Battle after they've already gone through one Battle Resolution as an attacking Unit.

A player, 15 June 2024 17:12

That didn't exist at the time though

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 17:12

(Without a further card effect saying it can, like Forced March.)

A player, 15 June 2024 17:12

Did it?

A player, 15 June 2024 17:13

I thought that was added later?

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 17:13

That's why the Shadowlands and Jade editions said "This card can be played in a battle in which you have no units." on Accessible Terrain.

A player, 15 June 2024 17:13 · in reply

Fair point

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 June 2024 17:13

No, you're right; "Second Battle Rule" didn't exist in CW. The Forced March Text is Oracle, not printed.

saaam (not official), 15 June 2024 17:13

It wasn't a keyword, just a sentence added to a bunch of cards to explain that they'll create presence, etc.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 June 2024 17:14 · in reply

Yeah, I was employing brevity.

A player, 15 June 2024 17:15

There we go. I was reading the most up-to-date one on oracle which would work differently

A player, 15 June 2024 17:16

But yeah like my fourth game of L5R I had that used against me and its been burned in ever since. Tbf they warned me

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 15 June 2024 17:16 · in reply

Talking "Accessible"? I mean, besides the fact I reformatted the entering play clause to the new "Destroy others" paradigm, it does work the same.

A player, 15 June 2024 17:18

I missed the Absent part of Absent Battle: 🤦😂

A player, 15 June 2024 17:18

It's been a long week sorry guys 😅
