Ah... interesting.
I was poking around the Wayback Machine and was looking at the Multiplayer Rules from the Ivory Arc, which look like some players start with copies of Bamboo Harvesters. Is there any context I'm missing?
Messages from the Oracle of the Void #l5r Discord channel, copied for Oracle of the Void. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings and the rulebooks may differ.

I don't recall any official multiplayer post Ivory. What you found may have been some manner of house rules?
That is, non-Siege multiplayer, to be clear.
Inquiring minds want to know...
Or perhaps a player found the old Multiplayer wiki page Rules that Kempy has in his Dropbox? Those rules are official and mention Bamboo Harvesters, but only because they were never updated past Emperor compatibility. :/
Ah... interesting.
Yeah, these are the rules linked in Dropbox.
Leads me to wonder, aside from starting holdings, is Ivory doable in multiplayer?
There's really very little that's different, and nothing that would be wildly affected by changes between EE and Ivory. Multiplayer basically just adds the "allies" Rules to combat. And, for the Rules in the Dropbox linked above specifically, you could substitute the Bamboo Harvester Rules for the Stronghold second-side, as they're essentially the same thing (you got Bamboo for "going second" in regular 2-player CE/EE, just like you get your Stronghold's "B-side" in Ivory and later, so you can give everyone who would normally get a Bamboo under those Multiplayer Rules their Stronghold's second side instead; it's actually less than "every player but the first". I just read them, and it's only the last 1-2 players who get the make-up for going later, depending on how many people you have; 3-player multiplayer gives Bamboo to only the last player, and 4+ multiplayer gives Bamboo to only the last 2 players in turn order).
What's the deal with Coils of Madness? Oracle has all cards listed as either Fixed or Premium.
Except for the premium cards, the entire set was released as one purchase initially
Like a direct to player set, although it was still through retailer/wholesalers
So the Booster packs only contained the Premium cards?
Or did it get re-released as a more standard expansion?
com booster packs contained only cards legal in Ivory
also fullbleed and foil versions, along with 9 fallen guys (they are absent in tin version)
I think the rarities were pretty flat too, nothing that would be considered actually a rare
Except for maybe the full bleeds and foils
So if someone wanted to play Emperor they'd need a factory set or buy singles?
I mean, there are two other perfectly viable options for playing Emperor Edition format: Proxy the cards, or build a deck without them (depending on what is allowed by whomever you're playing with).
Sure.
But yeah, there was a Factory set pretty nearly each arc. Just from memory: Jade/Gold was Heroes of Rokugan, Gold/Diamond was 1000 Years of Darkness (KYD), Lotus was Test of Enlightenment, Samurai was Test of Emerald and Jade Championships (and the Clan packs; don't get anyone started on those things), Celestial was Death at Koten.
I knew there were factory sets. It's the part where they reprinted half of it in boosters under the same name that had me boggled.
Oh, yeah, that was definitely a weird distribution experimentation. I stopped paying a lot of attention to distribution methods around mid-Samurai, when I started working for them and being paid in cards. 😛
the exact distribution on a Coils booster pack was 5 non-unique (or premium), 2 unique, all Ivory legal - one of the five non-uniques/premiums would guaranteed be a full-bleed version - and one of the two uniques might be a foil version - the "Premium" rarity which were booster-only included one non-unique for each clan, plus four proxy cards created by various CoM cards
It wasn't a reprint, they were released slightly staggered but only by a bit.
It was a complete wackadoodle experiment
And from the number of boxes still available an experiment that failed 😅
Huh. That's a shame I thought Coils was a cool set
Doesn't mean the set was bad but when you offer a product direct to consumer that has all the cards in it as a playset AND as booster packs... Boosters aren't going to sell well
they overestimated the demand for cosmetic enhancements to a D2P set, especially that late in the game's decline
I didn't get the direct to player set so I had to get boosters 😛
it's an interesting model that some of the LCG games are using though, 7th Sea City of Five Sails has "cosmetic upgrade boosters" as tournament prize packs
Yeah L5R did that a bit too (full bleed strongholds, ECT) which is the appropriate way to do that sort of thing
So there are mechanically distinct cards that only appear in CoM boosters?
No. Mechanically only Direct set only but everything in the boosters were in the direct set
The booster added foiled versions and full bleed versions
OK, I am beginning to get it.
But did not include cards that were included in the direct consumer set like the strongholds and a few other
Basically the "Emperor only" legal cards weren't in the boosters
not correct, the D2P set did not contain copies of the following personalities (could be found only in boosters) - Hiruma Ogata - Daidoji Adachi - Mirumoto Kazuya - Ikoma Ayumi - Yoritomo Tonogi - Isawa Ryuzo - Yogo Katsuta - Nishiguchi - Moto Xin
the "Fallen" non-uniques were booster-exclusive, and had regular and full bleed versions
Oh I stand corrected then
overall mechanically they weren't all that great and were largely ignored for deckbuilding
So what was the storyline reasoning logic for characters from the Clan War returning during that storyline?
P'an Ku was cloning them and/or also peeking into alternate, twisted timelines, I think? Something like that.
Interesting. I'll have to hunt down the lore around there
multiverse theory before the MCU mainstreamed it
Other CCGs had done it a decade earlier.
Marvel has been doing it since the 60s.. i don't think it's a competition
We started sign-ups for BigDeck tournament in Sun and Moon https://discord.gg/HTnwncy8
can we nuke foothills of the mad or what would it take to make it happen
I can verify for Gen Con so far: -It is banned on Modern -It is legal on BigDeck -OBH Legacy team is reviewing
I think it is highly likely that the CoM stronghold Foothold of the Mad will not be allowed at GenCon. A couple considerations: 1. OBH is a format created by somebody, so it would be nice to have an official "blessing" before banning a card. 2. The deck in question actually did lose a game which begs the question, "If we ban this deck, will another broken deck just step up and dominate the field?" I can tell you right now that most people at last year's GenCon legacy event thought that Chris Justice's Naga deck was the best deck. It has a comparable gold scheme out of Heart of the Shinomen and finished second despite being crippled by not being able to use it's Border Keep (Exp) due to a relatively obscure MRP ruling. At the end of the day, our goal is to offer a fun experience to a great group of people (and do it with as little headache as possible 😉
I mean if I get fast results like this. I just say ban the crane clan as a whole
Was Evil Portents ever released?
Yes, but after the announcement of the sale of the IP, which led to oddities in its sale and distribution that I don't recall the exact details of off the top of my head.
Ah I see
So it physically existed
Yep, absolutely, and was available to the general public.
Coz looking back at the sets, evil portents cards did not ring any bells
I guess I stopped right after the announcement
Who would blame you? 😛
lol
individuals were able to fill out a form and have a single booster tin mailed to them; not sure what the deal was with game shops at the time
There was some discussion about it a few weeks ago if you want to use the search function. Apparently stores were using it to entice people into clearing old stock.
Quite sad to see so many cool cards never had a chance to play
They were played. Personally i was organizing post sale tourneys in my area + all this online gaming.
I think that anybody was interested to play 20F and then Onyx after IP sale is familiar with EP.
I think my playgroup just stopped playing after the announcement
There was also ongoing 2015 autumn kotei season. And imho last few koteis in October/November got even EP legal.
Our last Kotei was in October, but before EP legality.
interesting, do u have a selection of lists ran those koteis?
shot you a PM when you are available
No. When IP was sold, AEG closed down their forum. Later they opened it, but stopped updating results and publishing kotei winners' decks. You may check compilations of results from this last season here: http://www.chikan.pl/index.php?topic=8756.0
It's a long shot but does anyone have any old Clan War miniatures?
Oh man.. I got rid of mine a few years ago. Couldn’t find anyone to give them to. Sorry.
That's a common theme. Or was in my playgroups. You might need to turn to fleaBay.
Yeah it's slim picking for anything worth a damn on there
Google for them? I've had luck finding random shops with inventory.
Yeah me asking here is post hunting all over the Internet. However anyone knows a shop (other than noble knights) Id love the tip
I've been meaning to make a visit to my local Game Store That Time Forgot(tm), I'll keep an eye out.
Thank you!
I have some extra clan wars stuff
🔥 got a list somewhere?
