Yeah I'm sorting through several large card boxes trying to separate by edition.. I swear I'm going to go blind. ๐
I swear whoever decided to have the set designators as slightly different colors of the same subtle patterns deserves a swift kick
Messages from the Oracle of the Void #l5r Discord channel, copied for Oracle of the Void. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings and the rulebooks may differ.
I swear whoever decided to have the set designators as slightly different colors of the same subtle patterns deserves a swift kick
Yeah, that seemed like a pretty lazy call, that Honor Bound, Ambition's Debt, Fire and Shadow, and Soul of the Empire were red, dark blue, gray, and olive, all the same pattern. Fortunately, you have the Oracle to tell you what's what. ๐
Yeah I'm sorting through several large card boxes trying to separate by edition.. I swear I'm going to go blind. ๐
I thought Clan War was bad.. holy hell
are you selling?
Nope, buying in bulk.
alright
Picked up a few estate sales recently
So lots of sorting
Are you looking for anything in particular?
We have a regular play group so I'm trying to complete several sets but we do have a bunch of extras, as long as you aren't a resellers we can talk ๐
I'm tryna complete my Crab collection
Where are you located?
Whatcha need?
East Coast US
whenever I read back and forths like these, I think of the guy from Resident Evil 4
I think of the Khajit from Elder Scrolls ๐
ah, so khajit has wares if you have coin?
IMO, I don't think a better method than what Magic does has been invented yet.
I can't remember half the names of the sets, or which cards go to which ones in L5R. Even if I experienced them.
So the three letters at the bottom are basically meaningless.
The bug, I do remember. But beyond that, it's all just muddled.
Meanwhile, Magic sets are clearly distinct with the set symbols. Though they don't tell you which block they're in.
Might be nice to combine those methods...
When separating sets the letters are a bit easier for sorting than barely visible patterns of slightly different colors
But yes Mtg definitely does have the best system currently
Alright so I changed gears to Ivory legal sets... Why the hell does nothing with Experienced have Unique in these sets? Did the accounting department take over the design team?
Yeah, but it's not the worst change around Ivory...
True. Also the 20F/Ivory same bug but different is also confusing af
I mean, yeah they have the same kanji, and it's not the nicest thing for anyone who might have difficulty telling the purple from the blue, but at least they never appear on each other's sides? Purples is always left, blue is always right.
But it defeats the purpose of having the kanji. It's the same symbol. Why not use a new kanji like literally every other set? ๐ฎโ๐จ So many seriously questionable borderline idiotic decisions made. Id love to hear the true methodology used for everything past Emperor edition
I read the story earlier of Reese playing Zinsler and that why Reese "simplified L5R" but the rest is still.. ๐
Well, I think the same-kanji rationale was thus: 20F was the "mid-set", like SE Banzai, CE15, and EEGem before it, but rather than have the legality barrel through the "mid-set" and stay exactly the same (with completely the same bug), varying the bug would allow for more pivot-points of legality, but using the same kanji unified the two base sets as being the same "arc" of game-plot-length as had been before. Certainly, there were more varied differences between Ivory and 20F than the near identical mid-sets before, but that was probably also a legality-pivot/balance thing.
Thanks for writing that up for me. Insightful and tracks as logical, I appreciate it
Yoritomo kinda was a terrible mess of bad decisions. The Kolat had the same goal (roughly), but were doing it arguably better and more sustainable. The more I thumb through old cards, they paint a picture that overtime Yoritomo didn't want anyone to be independant, and kind of just looks like a greedy daimyo. Justifying why he should be a great clan, why he should lead an army, why Yomi sucks, being a massive bully until he got what he wanted...
Balancing note: Bayushi Shoju was no better in the "string of bad decisions" category, and I'm a Scorpion Boy
Yeah but Shoju was SUPPOSED to make questionable decisions. Yoritomo just wanted to make his own rules
Yoritomo was the most American personality in the Emerald Empire
Was it fully determined if Shoju has a copy of Uikku's prophecies?
Okay, never mind, yes, Uikku talked to Diajin and there was a copy in Kyuden Bayushi
So yeah, Shoju knew what was the right thing to do to maintain not the Celestial Order, but to actually help save the Empire and keep the Empire moving forward. Yoritomo was all "yeah, you're gonna lose this war, and I will laugh while it happens safe on my island with all the people I bullied into being on my side, unless you give me what I want".
I found it amusing when one of those seals turned out to be right there next to him the whole time. XD
Anyone know what the deal with the "Soul of" Trait is? Clearly it's not intended to function as a regular Trait since cards that count Traits deliberately ignore it. They all seem to have identical abilities (and sometimes art) to their Clan War precursor. So why not keep the same name?
Because the story moves forward, sometimes very far, in time.
So a card that is a staple of decks needs to narratively be able to exist. The Soul Of represents that while also avoiding reprinting a personality with a new name, letting people have six.
People die in story, but their card is still needed to be available.
Is there a Rokugani prohibition against two people having the same name?
Holy fuck I forgot I was in this server
There aren't a lot of cards that count boldface traits (or keywords as they are now called), and I don't recall the ones that do ignoring it. But as Tenkei said, it's a deckbuilding constraint to allow the reprinting and use of older Personalities while moving the story forward with new ones.
Whatโs going on
No this was more a mechanical device
Not technically, but again, it makes stories about new characters more unique.
Welcome back? ๐
It was honestly a genius way to reuse solid card design but allow for the storyline to continue
(and save on card art ๐)
There's also the storyline tourneys to plan for. Like, say you want a Soul Of for Doji Hoturi, but the new one isn't a Thunder and may be forced to become Tainted. Now you need two different experience chains.
And mechanically, the Soul of keyword also allowed you to proxy your older copy if you needed to, so it didn't force you to get a whole new playset.
Oh I remember having Asami instead of Maru for a long time lol
It originally didn't save on Card Art. For many iterations, Soul ofs always had new art. It was only in later sets that it was used as a cost-cutting measure.
Ah, gotcha
I always think of Gohei. Needed in Lion agro, but that boy got murdered by the Senpet. Hachiro went in a completely different route.
Gohei got a raw deal...
Gohei got what he deserved. All he had to do was be polite :p
Yeah, Soul of was introduced in Gold, and remained through Diamond and Lotus always with new art. They did away with it in Samurai and Celestial (there were a few cards that were clearly "Soul of"s, but they were only a few and they decided "hard reset, get the new ones"). Then, the art-reuse Soul ofs came in when the keyword was reintroduced in Emperor. EDIT: I tell a lie. Looks like the art-reuse started in Lotus. Ah well. Memory cheats! I can only find one, though, Soul of Hitomi Akuai Exp, so they're pretty few and far between, not like every single one is reused art.
Thereโs no one here to play L5R WITH MEEEEE
Have you tried Sun and Moon online system? They have their own Discord server too, and regular games and tournaments.
No whatโs that
I like playing the physical cards
but if thereโs online
I tend to play with celestial/imperial/TF
Me and my big mouth; I don't actually know how to invite people to other Discord servers. ๐ There is an online program, but it's not automatic in any way. More like a Tabletop simulator.
:Tom_Look:
You have to be friends if the server doesn't have a copy/pastable code.
Oh do you
Well, I attempted to PM Revan an Invite link to Sun and Moon. Hope it works! ๐
Huzzah! I see that it did. ๐
You did
Thanks
Now what software they use!
Yeah, I think all the info is pinned in various channels. Sorry, I don't play online myself. I just lurk around being a know-it-all for Rules.
Sadge
I think my favorite part of the whole soul of trait by the end of it is that we ended up getting soul of... Characters that were already Soul of... Someone else
It's like they completely forgot how to use it correctly... ๐
And in between those two
Yeah, yeah. That's an outlying example, though. ๐
I once spend like 4 hours trying to track down all the soul of situations... I gave up after those 4 hours ๐ there's a handful in the Phoenix that got real confusing also
Was trying to figure out how to do a complete playset of everything without having to get a version from every new edition or arc
Oh, is it time to discuss the Soul Of [actor] chain? XD
"Soul of ..." let AEG print the same card, functionally (more or less), with a different name, without breaking Open.
You can just do a full test search on the Oracle for "Soul of" to get 'em all.
See the above example for why that doesn't work
That just an excuse to learn more about Directed Acyclic Graphs and use one for this. ๐
Ooh new topic to learn lol
