Oracle of the Void #l5r

September 2023

Messages from the Oracle of the Void #l5r Discord channel, copied for Oracle of the Void. Players' names are left out; the rules officials are named. Rulings are as they stood on these dates; later rulings and the rulebooks may differ.

A player, 10 September 2023 00:46

So I'm not sure if this is the right place to have this discussion but:

I played from roughly shadowlands till ~ The Plague War, and I'm curious about the design choices made in later editions (specifically Ivory/20F).

From splitting gold to all honor loss causing you to ignore honor requirements, what were the biggest changes, and what was the driving force behind things like splitting gold?

saaam (not official), 10 September 2023 01:24

Trying to copy MtG, probably.

saaam (not official), 10 September 2023 01:24

Same with allll the things becoming keywords, with half the cards containing little printed explanations.

saaam (not official), 10 September 2023 01:24

And consistently simplifying and dumbing down the rules overall.

saaam (not official), 10 September 2023 01:25

Duels, Cavalry, gaining PH from buying a Personality at full, Clan Discount, Foo Rule, etc.

saaam (not official), 10 September 2023 01:25

Also, toward the end, I argue that it's to make sure that the previous ~18 years of cards become incompatible, so that new players aren't tempted to try the older arcs out, as that means no sales of new stuff.

A player, 10 September 2023 01:26 · in reply

Yeah but they did that in Jade, Gold Diamond, ect. Look at Storms over Matsu Palace for a good example..

saaam (not official), 10 September 2023 01:26

No, that doesn't count. Each arc they printed one play-to-learn set, which included explanations.

A player, 10 September 2023 01:26

Hmm... gotcha

saaam (not official), 10 September 2023 01:27

As someone that played from early on, too, around TotV until Gold, and then again for Celestial, the latter rules feel hostile to old players.

saaam (not official), 10 September 2023 01:27

Totally get reducing some complexity and ambiguity, though. There was a bunch of that, due to lack of card wording templates, amongst other things.

saaam (not official), 10 September 2023 01:28

Some stuff they removed also had actual gameplay impact. For example, Followers having a PH requirement.

A player, 10 September 2023 01:29

Yeah... Ivory and 20F just seem so foreign its really bizarre

A player, 10 September 2023 01:31

Was it a completely different design team than previous editions for ivory and 20 festivals?

saaam (not official), 10 September 2023 01:37

Not sure about that one, but over the decades the design team(s) changed quite a bit.

A player, 10 September 2023 01:38

Yeah But usually there was overlap a bit of overlap, especially with a lot of the i guess middle edition guys being old playtesters. This feels like an entirely new team that had played a bit of L5R got a hold of it and had their way... πŸ˜‚

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 September 2023 03:38

and @saaam No, it was the same Lead Design they'd had for 10 years, in fact.

Besides an attempt at simplification (not so much to copy MtG, but to hopefully make the game more accessible), I do know that one other factor in the radical changes in Ivory/20F was to hopefully make it more easily adaptable into an e-Version of the game, to go alongside the CCG, in much the way MtG and Pokemon have. Sadly, that never came to any fruition.

I also would strongly disagree that the Design choices were to make the older cards incompatible. Tournament block legality did that on its own naturally; there was no need to change the Rules for it. And they're still largely compatible, especially thanks to the Oracle of the Void. I was never discouraged by Management/Design from maintaining that resource for any reason.

A player, 10 September 2023 03:39

Thank you!

A player, 10 September 2023 03:41

So from Lotus to 20F had the same design lead... that doesn't sound right..

A player, 10 September 2023 03:42

I could be wrong. I'll crack some sealed product later and check

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 September 2023 03:46

It was Bryan Reese. He might not have been Lead the whole time, but definitely the majority.

A player, 10 September 2023 03:47

Oh Bryan... I've got stories πŸ˜‚ yeah... i remember the drama now when he took over. Now it's coming back to me

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 September 2023 03:48

I mean, I was Rules Team for 6 years, mid-Samurai through the end, and he preceded me by a number of years.

A player, 10 September 2023 03:50

Yeah I was in one of the larger play test groups back in the early 2000s. But the logic and reasoning behind the changes makes sense and seem like smart business honestly. An attempt to keep up in a very competitive market.

A player, 10 September 2023 03:55

I stopped when several infinite combos and extreme negative play experience decks were reported (I'm looking at you infinite Oni 2005 and Cranezilla) and the lead play test liason basically told us off. Then went to GenCon 05 where over half the field was cranezilla

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 10 September 2023 03:57

Yeah, from what I hear, that sort of thing was a recurring problem. 😦 I just made sure the cards did what they're supposed to, not whether what they're supposed to is bad or not. πŸ˜›

A player, 10 September 2023 04:03

Hense when the lead liaison became lead designer there was drama

A player, 10 September 2023 04:03

But I was just a kid then so I'm sure there was more to it

Alex Jones (rules official), 10 September 2023 15:45

As I understand it....

Alex Jones (rules official), 10 September 2023 15:46

Zinser was playing a game with Reese present (could have been multiplayer), and tried to play a card; it was pointed out to him that the card didn't work that way

Alex Jones (rules official), 10 September 2023 15:47

Then it happened again.

Alex Jones (rules official), 10 September 2023 15:47

At which point, Zinser said, "I don't know how to play my own game any more."

Alex Jones (rules official), 10 September 2023 15:47

So Reese decided that the rules needed drastic simplification.

A player, 10 September 2023 15:58

I appreciate that!

kempy_nezumi (not official), 11 September 2023 07:09 · in reply

So it means that Zinser havent played his game for years.

But honestly i can understand such amnesia. I got a friend, who was top player for years here (he was eg a runner-up at euros), but as we met a year after IP sale and played L5R he completely forgot that Dynasty is after Action phase.

A player, 13 September 2023 16:07

Has anyone done an L5R draft cube? Would it work in Emperor or just Ivory?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 September 2023 16:11

Probably will be easier in Ivory/Twenty Festivals as in EE there are many cards that require specific keyword to work while in IvE actions are more generic but have kickers depend on keyword.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 September 2023 16:12

In Emperor lot of generic solid actions are rare or promo cards, but if you have access to such cards you may also try in EE.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 13 September 2023 16:22

Also becasue of such "kickers", Ivory/Twenty Festivals is best environment for standard booster Draft in history of game.

A player, 14 September 2023 16:36

Googling around I found this, which looks cool: http://l5rkenjutsuformat.blogspot.com/2012/05/what-is-l5r-kenjutsu-format.html?m=1

[What is the L5R Kenjutsu Format?]
A player, 14 September 2023 16:36

Seems like the concept was pre-Ivory, so I'll need to compare to the later draft rules.

A player, 14 September 2023 18:05

Oh hey, I recognize that. That was the format that I tried to create. I loved the MTG cube format and that was the original idea around it.

A player, 15 September 2023 00:15

just read through it, that looks really cool! Makes me want to do something similar, but I think I have some different ideas on how to resolve the issues you talked about.

I'd say, include 3 different printings of each ring within the kata instead of adding them after the fact. The issue I have with adding them after is if you don't have enough rings for everyone to get one, you might wind up with a scenario where like, everyone wants the Samurai ring of the void, so how do you determine who gets it? Downside is that it uses 15 slots, but it's kind of a central theme, so I think it's fine. And they are unique by card name, so people can't be bogarding them too much.

I'd prefer to use a generic stronghold as the base, and then draft strongholds if you want to, but I'd also put in a caveat that the generic stronghold has no clan alignment, but you can proclaim any personality once per turn, and out of clan personalities do not cost extra for you. If that's all it does, I think people would want to draft a stronghold of their own. But then they wouldn't be flooded with choices from a Stronghold pack. Then you could include 2 strongholds per clan/faction in the Kata, and they'd be fairly findable. Alternatively, divvy out a stronghold to each player at random, and let them trade if they want to.

Clan Holdings as additional add-ins like basic lands makes sense to me. I'd even go so far as to say, you can add as many of any clan holdings as you like, or the Draft card, Brilliant Artisan. Then the only holdings you'd include in the Kata are ones that it's worth paying 2 for less than 3 gold cost on. (Or like, 6 for 5, etc)

I also would prefer to avoid any keyword themes in such a format, as trying to include any tribal mechanics means drafting generically good personalities becomes a liability. If there's a berserker who's gonna do good things by being berserker buff, just let him be that. Don't add a stronghold or a bunch of strategy cards that specifically care about berserkers. The most I'd go for is Samurai, Courtier, Shugenja, and Monk, because a lot of the defining features of those keywords are what cards they can play.

But... that's kinda getting into the nitty gritty of how one might design a Kata, rather than other options for how to facilitate it.

Bottom line, I like the idea. I talk a lot without doing things, but I'd like to pull this off. I'll see if I can manage it.

A player, 15 September 2023 13:09 · in reply

That's a good point with the rings. Maybe you could also make 2 "ring" boosters that cycle around, allowing for Enlightenment victories or side boarding the extra rings.

A player, 15 September 2023 16:03

Drafted strongholds would be interesting too... would you include that in the first round or later round of packs?

A player, 17 September 2023 20:05

So how much has to be changed to use Ivory/20F cards with the rest of the l5r editions? Is it worth the effort?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 September 2023 20:09

If you have only-pre Ivory cards use any pre-Ivory ruleset. Most reasonable will be using a ruleset of majority of cards you play or just Emperor.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 September 2023 20:11

If you have cards up to Ivory/Twenty Festivals use some Legacy rulesets like Obsidian Hand - it's a ruleset that mixes stuff from "both worlds".

kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 September 2023 20:11

It's possible and playable what all those OBH activities prove.

A player, 17 September 2023 20:14

I have everything from Pre-Imperial to Thunderous Acclaim so Im askong about mixing it all

A player, 17 September 2023 20:15

So obsidian hand is what I'm looking for?

kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 September 2023 20:15

Yes

A player, 17 September 2023 20:18

Awesome ty. Reviewing the Ivory+ ruleset I was reminded why I never got back into it when I could afford to post college. Ivory+ just has an entirely different feel, like you're playing a different game entirely.

I appreciate the info

kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 September 2023 20:22 · in reply

Hmm, it took like 5 minutes to adapt from pre Ivory to Ivory as core is identical. "Different game entirely" feeling happens when you compare AEG game with FFG version. But it's my personal experience.

A player, 17 September 2023 20:23

I'm glad you had that experience. As a long time tournament player when L5R was in its hey day the experience is different.

A player, 17 September 2023 20:24

And I know this isn't an uncommon experience amongst older rings players I still interact with

kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 September 2023 20:27

I was tournament player since late Lotus till the end, and went through all those changes from Lotus->Samurai keyword cut, through CE/EE Border Keep craziness stuff to Ivory.

A player, 17 September 2023 20:29

Cool

A player, 17 September 2023 20:41

I played from Shadowlands until the Heavens Will. At that point design started to get a bit lazy in my play groups opinion, and it was no longer worth the time investment. It was around then (really about half way through Lotus) that things started going off the rails for our playgroups

kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 September 2023 20:50

On the other hand many people consider Samurai edition as one of the best blocks and as revival of CCG.

So for long-lived game like L5R CCG is nearly impossible to be 100% objective unless someone played 1995-2015 and had same enthusiasm through its whole lifespan.

kempy_nezumi (not official), 17 September 2023 20:50

Because playing same game for 10+ years might be tiresome.

A player, 17 September 2023 20:55 · in reply

It did indeed start that way

A player, 17 September 2023 23:24

For me, I enjoyed the more broken environments (Jade, late Diamond, Lotus, Emperor) but I did better in formats that were lower powered (Samurai, Ivory / 20F).

A player, 17 September 2023 23:33

When game design felt more story/theme oriented and less "balanced/accessibility" oriented

saaam (not official), 18 September 2023 00:51

The "balanced/accessibility oriented" parts seemed too forced. Like so much got neutered/rebalanced, and yet the exact same power creep happened, but more insidious?

A player, 18 September 2023 01:13

I've spent years since my time playing rings, working on games and I've generally found the more you intentionally try to balance a game, the less fun it becomes overall

saaam (not official), 18 September 2023 02:40

That's a good point, and I've ranted before about liking the early arcs' brokenness, because it was kind of an absurd rock-paper-scissors thing, vs everything being so much more designed and balanced, except it creates and overwhelming slide.

saaam (not official), 18 September 2023 02:41

For example, the old 5-7 points of Honour loss per whatever were huge, but you could also swing up easily, whereas in the latter arcs it become all about the 1-2, or 3, points of loss per action, and you'd have tons of them a turn, but with fewer ways to gain Honour back.

saaam (not official), 18 September 2023 02:41

So if you build one direction faster/better, there's nothing you can do.

A player, 18 September 2023 02:46

Shame πŸ˜‚

saaam (not official), 18 September 2023 02:49

Yeah. I mean, it's definitely a bad experience as a new player to get hit with something like Iaijutsu Challenge/Refuse + Shame + Shame on a Shuggie (before Seppuku was allowed which is dumb), but that was part of the risk/reward thing.

saaam (not official), 18 September 2023 02:49

Vs "No matter what I do, I'm losing net 3 FH a turn until I inevitably die in 10 turns."

saaam (not official), 18 September 2023 02:51

The Seppuku thing would have been cool if it was kept separate. I get the punishment for running non-Samurai, but the mechanical implementation was sub-par. I'd have gone with something like: Samurai can Seppuku as a Reaction and with the -1 FH loss, while Courtiers and Shugenja have to do it as an Open or something like that. So it's more of a head game, around whether you destroy your Dishonoured Personality on the off-chance your opponent has a Shame or whatever to play as their next action.

Alex Jones (rules official), 18 September 2023 12:11

Well, this is the Timmy/Johnny/Spike view.

Alex Jones (rules official), 18 September 2023 12:11

Some players like to find incremental edges, some players like to find bombs.

Alex Jones (rules official), 18 September 2023 12:11

And trying to keep both happy is not easy.

A player, 24 September 2023 16:22

Hey everyone. Its been a long while since ive played and interested in getting back into it with a handful of decks to share w my friends. I learned to play around gold edition and put it down for a while when the border changed.. came back for ivory through the end.

That being said: I want to build them with the old, old border cards/ imperial up to hidden emperor. (Is there a name for this era of border design? Is it just imperial?) Ive grown to love the design of these cards aesthetically- but really dont know the gameplay too well from this era.

I was hoping to find some insight, suggestions, direction and/or just general help with this as i haven’t been able to find many resources on decks from that era..

Anyone familiar have any suggestions for a project like this? Thanks!

A player, 24 September 2023 16:32

With OG borders I think that's Imperial and early Jade. Honor Bound changed the card borders if I recall.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 24 September 2023 16:35 · in reply

Pearl Edition changed them, but yeah. Imperial (Clan War) arc through Jade Edition and all Hidden Emperor episodes.

A player, 24 September 2023 16:35

Akodo War College has some good decks from Imperial and Jade.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 24 September 2023 16:36

Unfortunately, there was no legality-change with Pearl Edition. "Jade" legality was from JE up to Gold, so it'll be a lot harder to find decks that only use cards up through The Dark Journey Home.

A player, 24 September 2023 16:37

Thank you, very much appreciated!!

A player, 24 September 2023 16:39 · in reply

This is a perfect place to start! Cheers 😊

A player, 24 September 2023 16:54

Oh i see, yeah. Well thats where oracle of the void comes in! Thanks for the help

saaam (not official), 24 September 2023 17:10

I also have a large collection of Imperial era and early Jade decks, from before the border change.

saaam (not official), 24 September 2023 17:10

I really disliked when Pearl changed them.

saaam (not official), 24 September 2023 17:10

Also, in Sun and Moon, you can specify which printing of a card to use, so you can play decks with the old faces, and even swap out the cardbacks to the classic ones.

Never tried sun and moon but i probably should..

saaam (not official), 24 September 2023 17:14

So if you want nostalgia, I can share a bunch of those decks, they use the oldest card printings each time.

I would love that!

I have to say, I think the most frustrating part of OoV is how every event text is incorrect prior to Ivory

A player, 29 September 2023 23:52

and Im confused as to why a line of rulebook text was added to every single one of them. It makes quickly reading through them impossible

saaam (not official), 30 September 2023 00:41

Of course.

saaam (not official), 30 September 2023 00:41

One of the many things I've ranted about before.

saaam (not official), 30 September 2023 00:41

Massive changes for 20F, that screw up every card before.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 30 September 2023 00:52 · in reply

It admittedly wasn't the most elegant solution, but it was the way I chose to make them all work under 20F Rules at the time. A less messy option would've been to add a Legacy Rule about them, but again, contemporarily, L5R wasn't dead and Ivory was the new standard, and I was firmly against adding set-specific Rules to Legacy, like, "for cards prior to Ivory [this Rule applies, and this Rule applies, and this Rule applies]" ad nauseum. The better option I felt was, if you want to see how a card works under the current Rules, read the Oracle text. Not the Oracle text plus a supplementary Rules document (unless absolutely necessary, such as for defunct keywords).

A player, 30 September 2023 01:03
