As a... general curiosity... outside of the "theme" of the word... is there any mechanical difference between melee and ranged attacks?
If not, can we start to consider making one?
At the moment the only relavence is combining them, and the fact you can't combine ranged/melee.
But that just means if people want to pump up one kind they build their deck around that kind.
Seems that ultimately it's the same thing at the moment.
I think it would be cool for melee and ranged attacks to function differently

Hello! It seems that in Ivory, I can use the leftover gold from my stronghold until the end of the phase. Can I use leftover gold from holdings, as well?
Jeremy Sumerlin (rules official), 4 February 2025 23:46
Yes
A player, 4 February 2025 23:46
Gold pooling was a controversial change but ultimately, I think, a necessary simplification
A player, 4 February 2025 23:46
Nice

I didn't find anything in the rulebook about being able to pay 2 less for your in-clan personalities without gaining honour equals to their persaonal honour. Was this rule changed?
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2025 23:47 · in reply
Certain Holdings do have certain restrictions upon this mechanic, it should be noted. "has +XGP when paying for a single X card only".
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2025 23:48 · in reply
Clan Discount is no longer a thing.
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2025 23:48
You pay what is in the coin. However! "Out of clan tax" is now a thing.
A player, 4 February 2025 23:48
oh
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2025 23:48
If a Personality has a Clan Alignment, but they do not have YOUR Clan Alignment, you pay 2 MORE.
A player, 4 February 2025 23:48
But do you gain honour from your in-clan ones?
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2025 23:49 · in reply
Once per turn, only on your own turn. It's called "Proclaiming"; similar to prior Editions, but it's just a choice to modify Recruiting rather than a separate action.
A player, 4 February 2025 23:50
Hmm... I see. Trying to get familiar with the "new" rules 😅 Thank you, you all!
A player, 4 February 2025 23:51
Ah
A player, 4 February 2025 23:51
One more question xD
A player, 4 February 2025 23:51
I can now only use the imperial favour to either draw a card or send an unit to their fief?
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2025 23:52 · in reply
Per the Rulebook Favor actions and in Ivory/20Festivals, yes. If you're talking about Onyx and beyond digital fan-made Editions, they've re-introduced Winds with more options.
A player, 4 February 2025 23:53
Discard favor and a card to draw
A player, 4 February 2025 23:53
Send home an attacker
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2025 23:53
Also, since you're using "fief" you must be really old school. It's been called "Home" for a while now, and also only Attacking units, and yes, it costs a card to draw one; cycle not full draw.
A player, 4 February 2025 23:54
Ah ok, ok (last time I played this, it had 4 possible effects)
A player, 4 February 2025 23:54
Curious about the Onyx's Winds now
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 4 February 2025 23:55 · in reply
They're in the ROU (Rise of Otosan Uchi) expansion.
A player, 4 February 2025 23:56
Nice. I'll try to come up with a deck anytime soon 🙂
What about the unaligned ones, then? Do they cost the same as printed?
Jeremy Sumerlin (rules official), 5 February 2025 00:00
Yes
Jeremy Sumerlin (rules official), 5 February 2025 00:01
They must have a legal Clan alignment to cost 2 more.
Jeremy Sumerlin (rules official), 5 February 2025 00:01
Which means that they have a legal stronghold
Jeremy Sumerlin (rules official), 5 February 2025 00:01
So for example the Wasp Clan people are treated as Unaligned, because they have no legal Stronghold
A player, 5 February 2025 00:04
Got it, thanks!
A player, 5 February 2025 15:56
Oh... I see... let me repost my question above... lol

Seems more of card commentary- or general-channel question for Design than Rules. But as far as my capacity to answer in the latter instance, yeah, mechanically it's just to prevent their combination, and being able to make effects that benefit or hinder one or the other but not always both.
To me, ranged attacks make more sense than melee. I mean, it is a special type of military unit. But shouldn't most military units in Rokugan's setting be able to make some form of melee attacks? I understand there are personalities with zero force but with the exception of the Phoenix Clan in 20F, these are not very common.
A player, 5 February 2025 21:42
I mean, from a design standpoint you could easily remove melee/ranged and just call it an attack...
Or you could easily make melee and ranged actually do mechanically different things.
A player, 13 February 2025 17:18
does Mishime sensei discount counts for both your enemies SH personalities and your own?
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 February 2025 17:24 · in reply
Your Maho actions and Maho Spells cost 2 less for each player who controls Shadowlands Personalities. If you control any SL Personalities, you pay 2 less; if you and another player both control any SL Personalities, you pay 4 less. If you are playing a multiplayer game with 4 total players (including you) and all of you control some/any SL Personalities, you pay 8 less. Does that help?
SO thats why there was such disparity between elemental and maho costs. I was paying 4 gold for each because corrupting during combat was so punishing. Thank you
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 February 2025 17:27 · in reply
I'm not exactly following what you said there, but hopefully we're on the same page now. 🙂
I was just comparing some of the effects and costs of maho to the elemental spells and found that there were so many awesome 0 cost spells while maho was difficult to set up and pricey, but now it makes sense if I can lower the cost to 0 by corrupting my opponent
Your Rings in play or discard pile, can't use your opponent's rings
A player, 14 February 2025 00:08
oh that is a sure thing wasn't having a doubt about that part
A player, 14 February 2025 00:09
hm tbh that wasne never a question
A player, 14 February 2025 04:22
So does this additional action come from the stronghold or from the ring? It is printed on the stronghold, but it says "from your target ring" so does the ring need to be repeatable for this to work or can it work with the Dark Ring of Air for example?
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 February 2025 10:30 · in reply
The first action is from the Stronghold, then the additional action is directly after the Stronghold action and from the Ring. "Additional" actions are ones you take immediately after another action to keep tempo/not give your opponent a chance to act in between; that term has nothing to do with taking the same action twice.
Thanks, so it appears it will not work on the Dark Ring of Air then because it is not repeatable. It says "ignoring bow costs" but doesn't give the action repeatable if it is not already.
Actually, now I am confused again. Actions on bowed cards cannot be used unless they are tireless. So if the ring is bowed, it can't be used again right? Something else would need to unbow the ring in between its first use and the second use.
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 14 February 2025 21:20 · in reply
Again, for an in-play Ring (setting aside the utility of using and reshuffling one from the discard), the Stronghold action has nothing (directly) to do with using the Ring a second time in the same turn. It's about using the Stronghold in tandem with your first use of its action, thus keeping it unbowed so it can be used again if its action does have Repeatable or so that it will still be straight on your opponent's turn for potential use (assuming you used it first during your own turn).
Ah thanks! I figured this out myself about 10 mins ago but you have confirmed which is great. So the stronghold works differently for rings in play, because you have to use this quasi-use of the ring FIRST, and then you can still use the ring later because it is still unbowed. But if the ring is in your hand, you use the ring itself FIRST and then the stronghold lets you use it again from the discard pile. Again I guess this would work in the same turn only if the ring is repeatable.
