Can you discard Okui (RtR) to straighten Contemplative Shrine (Onyx)?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 June 2024 12:02 · in reply

Yes. The trait is affecting itself, making it a "Spell" in addition to its Follower type, so it is in effect always, even while not in play.

A player, 3 June 2024 16:22

a random question on the new legacies. does the legacy keyword come with the 16 holding minimum as a feature of legacy and the search effect or do the ones without it allow you to run under 16 holdings?

A player, 3 June 2024 17:22

I understand only Radiant Bay (as far as ShE legality goes) has that limitation

Answers on: Radiant Bay
A player, 3 June 2024 17:23

while the actual Legacy rules don't make any mention to that:

"Dynasty: Remove a card in your hand from the game to search your deck and Provinces for a Legacy card. Put it face up in one of your Provinces, discarding the card there. If you fail to find a Legacy card, you lose the game."

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 3 June 2024 17:29

If the card doesn't mention the limitation specifically, one doesn't apply. The text on FL/RB isn't reminder text, but a card effect applied to your deck construction by including the specific card(s).

Hi guys. In this iteration of the game : my opponent plays overwhelmed. I move home my personality but he plays ring of earth. Will my personality die because of ring of earth preventing the movement; or will my personality live because I chose the movement but my opponent forced it to stay? Thanks.

A player, 9 June 2024 16:04

as you were unable to move them home you then have to destroy them, although due to timing of actions they would have had to interrupt before you made your choice. so they would play overwhelmed, chose their own targets then the interrupt step happens, if they ring of earth at this point you cannot move home your units and thus will have to destroy your personality, if they waited to ring of earth until you were making your decision they have missed their window and would not be able to interrupt. I had a thesis on this yesterday when I had a similar question

A player, 9 June 2024 16:07

thanks a lot 🙂

A player, 9 June 2024 16:08 · in reply

yeah recently learnt this card is not only a lot but also kinda stupidly good in the current environment

A player, 9 June 2024 18:52

Remember that he has to play Ring of Earth as an interrupt to his action, NOT to you moving your people home

A player, 9 June 2024 18:52

Be sure to pass interrupts to make him play it before you make your decisions.

A player, 10 June 2024 02:26

Overwhelmed is a good card to reset the balance if you are being destroyed by a tower unit your opponent has built. The main ways to play around it are to either play a different battlefield first and harpoon (eg with Kanpeki Wind) the personality in the opponent's army that they were hoping to destroy as a cost to play Overwhelmed. Or you could bow the personality with highest force in their army then they cannot play Overwhelmed because the card requires the person with highest force in their army to be unbowed.

If a personality is banished while they are dishonorable do you lose their PH like you do if they die? Or is that not a thing anymore in Onyx?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 June 2024 14:36 · in reply

Banishing, or RFG, isn't a thing that really happened much to Personalities in play, so I'm not sure it was ever covered by prior Rules to be considered "not a thing anymore". I don't have the CR handy, but I'm fairly sure Honor loss is only triggered by a dishonorable Personality dying, so RFG won't trigger it (and I don't think ever did).

Jeff Williamson (rules official), 12 June 2024 14:38

the Personality's dishonor, like the Personality, is swallowed by the Void

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 June 2024 14:40

P.S. If dishonorable Honor loss is, or was ever, triggered by said Personality just "leaving play", then consider me mistaken, but I don't believe it's so.

for context, if I Black Powder Tactics with a Mantis token from the sensei or Gusai Mikka and then they get RFGd at the end of the turn

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 12 June 2024 18:40 · in reply

Ah, yes, I see, and I am now in a place to check the CR. So, if your created Personality from Gusai Mikka becomes dishonorable while still existing, then banishes at the end of the turn, no you would not lose Honor equal to their PH. Only dishonorable Personalities who are destroyed trigger the Honor loss.

A player, 12 June 2024 21:14

They can't prove they died dishonorably if there's no body left 😎

A player, 18 June 2024 23:11

Legacy ONLY can target face up dynasty cards in your province to replace, yes?

A player, 18 June 2024 23:11

@Brook Cunningham

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 18 June 2024 23:13 · in reply

You mean Cycle?

A player, 18 June 2024 23:13

I mean, I go get a LEgacy card, can it ONLY replace face up cards in province, or any card in province?

A player, 18 June 2024 23:14

(i.e. can it replace a face down card in your province, discarding it)

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 18 June 2024 23:14 · in reply

Any.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 18 June 2024 23:14 · in reply

Yep.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 18 June 2024 23:15

(Sorry I asked if you meant Cycle; I forgot the Onyx version of Legacy throws it in a Province, unlike the 20F CR version that Recruits it right into play.)

A player, 18 June 2024 23:18 · in reply

Why the change, anyway?

A player, 18 June 2024 23:18

There are non-Holding Legacy cards now

A player, 18 June 2024 23:18

Oh right, Legacy Events

Jeremy Sumerlin (rules official), 18 June 2024 23:20

Correct. It allowed us to extend Legacy to other things. Theoretically, if we wanted to make a Legacy Personality as well, then we'd rather it go into a province as opposed to just popping into play

A player, 21 June 2024 17:08

@Brook Cunningham is there a complete Onyx rules document anywhere?

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 21 June 2024 17:10 · in reply

Not yet, unfortunately. It's our/my intent to make one, but for now, Onyx uses 20F Rules from the final AEG Comprehensive Rules, supplemented by the Onyx Rules Datasheet you can find in the public Google Drive.

A player, 21 June 2024 20:27

No worries. That’s what I could find but was just hoping. It’s a big undertaking making full rules documents so I understand.

A player, 22 June 2024 16:00

Timing question.

When (if at all) would I discard an honor card, to get the extra honor for a "triggered" honor gain? Like this:

A player, 22 June 2024 16:01

Like all interrupts, right after targets are chosen

A player, 22 June 2024 16:02

Does it still give the honor, even if you haven't gained honor from it yet?

A player, 22 June 2024 16:02

I think thats where my confusion is.

A player, 22 June 2024 16:06

If you gain honor, Then it is increased or decreased by 1 via the interrupt

A player, 22 June 2024 16:06

It does not preemptively give you honor

A player, 22 June 2024 16:07

so you play the honor, then it waits for the trigger just like the effect does

A player, 22 June 2024 16:07

got it

A player, 22 June 2024 16:13

Right, possibility exists that no honor is gained and the honor card is "wasted"

A player, 22 June 2024 16:14

Got it. Thank you.

A player, 29 June 2024 19:21

Hi, Can I use Yami no Kami's Pyre spell targeting the same personality? (Considering that said personality is bowed)

A player, 29 June 2024 19:21
[attachment: Sin_titulo.jpg]
A player, 29 June 2024 19:41

Yes, it does not specify "another"

A player, 29 June 2024 20:14

Thanks!

A player, 29 June 2024 20:20

What does the keyword "resilient" mean in Ivory-onward? I saw it on a card the other day, and I've never seen reminder text for it.

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 29 June 2024 20:25 · in reply

It's in the 20F Comprehensive Rules: "The Resilient keyword means that, once per game per card, the card is not destroyed by the rulebook effects of battle resolution; that is, if its side loses or it ties. Its attached cards are still destroyed normally. A card that loses and then gains Resilient is still bound by the “once per game per card” restriction." It has also been quietly phased out of Onyx. Shh! Don't tell anyone. 😉

A player, 29 June 2024 20:28

same as Stalwart 😛

A player, 29 June 2024 20:29

which was stating that this personalitu is negating first bowing from opponent card's effects each turn (If I recall it right)

Brook Cunningham (rules official), 29 June 2024 20:30 · in reply

Oh, you mean "same" as in "also quietly phased out". Haha. Yep. Also correct on your recollection.

A player, 29 June 2024 20:34

but the Keywords that I am most glad that was phased out, was Brash and Overconfident. thous were true crap!

A player, 29 June 2024 20:45 · in reply

huhhhhhhh sounds like more information to track! 👀😂

A player, 29 June 2024 20:47 · in reply

Yeah Resilient was one of most annoying, cause there was ways to give personality resilent, and then as it is once per game save, You had to remember thgat he got it and it went off

A player, 29 June 2024 20:47

on a personality without printed keyword

A player, 29 June 2024 20:55

sounds like a major headache (esp. in L5R)

Jeremy Sumerlin (rules official), 29 June 2024 21:06

That would be why it was "retired" from active service

Jeremy Sumerlin (rules official), 29 June 2024 21:06

It is one of the winners of the Banding Award

But I love Banding (when I use it in EDH to mess with my opponent’s damage calculations)
