I want to get clarification on this cards negate effect. specifically the limits of it. things that I think are within its scope, Negating duels targeting a spider clan personality at the same location, Negating force penalties, bowing or destruction on other spider clan personalities, things which solely target the spider clan personality. this I am more unclear on, like a twig like effects that bow the unit or destroy a unit? would the negate prevent it all or would it simply prevent the targets bowing/ destruction? effects like meditating the mind, it has to target the personality to effect the unit, would it nullify the effect on the unit too or just the personality? like i am not trying to break anything, just want to know what this does spesifically as i thought i knew what churo did and was pleasantly suprised so wanted to get clarification here too
Jeff Williamson (rules official), 1 May 2024 10:06
Effects that target a unit target all of the cards in that unit, including the Personality. Shaoru's negate will stop the effects on the targeted Personality only, so the other cards in the unit would still be affected (destroyed, bowed, etc.).
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 May 2024 10:07 · in reply
Not entirely correct. Effects that target a unit only target the Personality, but affect the entire unit. However, the rest is correct. We've also done our best to phase out unit targeting entirely; MM was an aberration from incomplete proofreading and is due a tech errata to bring it in line with current paradigms.
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 May 2024 10:09 · in reply
If it helps to think of it this way, consider that an effect is a change of game state. So, a Personality targeted by the action won't have any changes from the action applied to them, but anything else will.
So in the example of Like a twig it would destroy all attachments but the personality would remain unscathed, but for meditating mind, the personality would suffer no ill effect and so would do absolutely nothing and so not worth triggering.
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 May 2024 10:17 · in reply
I don't have the cards handy, but that sounds correct. Definitely for MM, as I remember it only bows attachments, so your assessment that Shaoru would do nothing is correct.
for reference. as an additional aside to like a twig, it requires you to bow a unit of fully unbowed cards right?
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 1 May 2024 10:24 · in reply
Yes, everything in the first Personality's unit has to be bowed by that card's effect for the effect after the "to" to happen. And yeah, as you said, Shaoru would stop the Personality's destruction, but the rest of the unit goes poof.
cool cool, i feel i understand the wording on a lot ofcards more now. you have been an insane help π

A coulpe of questions on Kisada's Funeral. If my opponent has Kisada's Funeral in play and I have Shinshei's Heart, are my honor gains from non-battle actions, such as Proclaim, reduced by 1? Does Kisada's Funeral reduce honor gains from cards destroyed during battle resolution? Thanks
just for clarity, is the battle resolution honor gain not effected by kisada's because it is not an action?
A player, 2 May 2024 10:19
Correct. KFexp affects honor gains from Open, Interrupt, Response and Dynasty actions. Battle actions, trait-based honor gains and battle resolution are not affected
A player, 2 May 2024 10:22
Oh, and Engage actions are also technically affected
in ShE there are almost no solitaire honor gains, if I'm not mistaken, all honor producing holdings are Fortifications, which the other player can interact with by attacking the province. I'm ok with forcing the honor player to interact, but if proclaiming is affected, I don't think honor victory is viable
Simply need to prove your honor in battle, just as Akodo intended
A player, 2 May 2024 10:26
Regarding fortifications... can you recruit more than one fortification in a single province?
A player, 2 May 2024 10:27
there are a lot of favor actions floating around in the format and the favor is pretty easy to get comfortably. windless you get access to the 6 for 6 which is very strong as a kharmic card too, it lets you use iweko's shadow which is also super strong right now. ring of air is pretty easy to get into place same for ring of earth if you are running defensive wisdom gained could be a good option too.
A player, 2 May 2024 10:27
Do also bear in mind that only Kano wind players can reliably get KFexp via legacy
I don't think the ring of earth is always easy to put into play, but the thing is that one card is basically dictating how I have to build my whole deck. As an honor player I must include rings in my deck
A player, 2 May 2024 10:32
last arc I played was Celestial, and this card felt way more fair than KFexp
[attachment: printing_8235_3_details.png]
A player, 2 May 2024 10:32
going to be real, i don't think kanpeki aliance will run kisada's funeral in the long run, without legacy and with meditating mind in the format it will get slapped down more often than not and kanpeki's wind generally leads to a more control focused game where we are dishonoring your people, harpooning important people etc and so kisada's is not as good, promise of peace i prefer as honor meta if i need it and death of the mantis although death of the mantis is more anti dishonor
I agree, and I do miss the new order. I would say play the environment a bit first before saying the card is too oppressive, not everyone is running it and unless they are kano you won't see it every game.
A player, 2 May 2024 10:41
my meta is very small (only two friends and I) but the fact that KFexp exists makes me not want to play honor. If I play honor, my friends are compelled to use the card, then, I have to modify my deck only to deal with one card, as it basically destroys my game plan
get your friends onto sun and moon too π then we can all play together. in that instance I would chat with your friends and rule zero kisada's funeral out of the format.
A player, 2 May 2024 17:42
Tbh, honor victory isn't dead. Currently it forces you to play the game with another person. The difficulty is in the mirror match, primarily in the defensive aspect.

@Brook Cunningham Masatari sensei: Is the follower targeting a necessary part of the action, or not? My understanding is that everything after the colon is an effect
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 5 May 2024 18:22
Oh, you thought you could maybe make a Fear 0 in the absence of a Follower? Yeah, nah. π
A player, 5 May 2024 18:23
No, I make a battle action that Levied can interrupt with Courage

A player, 5 May 2024 18:35
Hi @Brook Cunningham, pursuant to what we were talking about before, so people can see this: Does the action need to have a Fear effect to use the rulebook Courage Interrupt?
And more specifically, if I'm playing with Masatari Sensei, could ANY action be Interrupted with the Courage ability, allowing me to bring Levied Refugees into play once per turn if they're in my discard?
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 5 May 2024 18:46 · in reply
Technically, yes. The Courage Interrupt is worded in such a way you can Interrupt any action with it (that I've tried to avoid in Onyx-forward Interrupt and Response wordings, now that I'm getting more of a handle on what was essentially a new mechanic designed and maintained by committee before), even ones that don't have a Fear effect in them to modify.
A player, 6 May 2024 12:16
Question - Overwhelmed: "...enemy leader may target two in their current army and, if they did not, must target and destroy a personality..." Is the number of units sent home one or two or exactly two? Do you have to target exactly two personalities or destroy one or can you send home only one?
The move home must target exactly two personalities
A player, 6 May 2024 12:19
ok that's what I thought, thank you.
A player, 6 May 2024 12:23
Target and move two. If you cannot target 2, or if either movement is negated, destruction ensues
A player, 6 May 2024 12:33
oh yeah I hadn't seen that interaction but thanks, it probably would have come up.
A player, 7 May 2024 07:08
clarification question. if honor gains from responces, engages, or interrups happen during the combat segment, since its not a battle action, it is reduced by 1 to minimum 1 still correct?
A player, 7 May 2024 07:11
i can post potential examples of the card examples
A player, 7 May 2024 08:33
There's no minimum of 1 on the card, so I'm not sure where you're getting that from
Just a question on Kasada's Funeral... It says its ability will not be negated, but most negation that I am aware of says to negate the effects, not the ability. Is this supposed to be the same thing?
A player, 7 May 2024 09:39
The ability is the Dynasty action that puts it into play
A player, 7 May 2024 09:39
And I was asking about the minimum because at work, couldn't check the errata
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 7 May 2024 10:08 · in reply
Yes. Even if the action happens during a battle, if the action itself is not "Battle", KF reduces it.

Sorry I posted the wrong one I need to update my image packs. Lol
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 7 May 2024 17:03 · in reply
Correct.
A player, 8 May 2024 09:33
I think I know the answer to this one but card you control and your cards are two separate things. one is ownership and one is control. my reason for checking is this card combined with some of the stealing effects like Chuda Ruri do not synergies as Ruri only gives you control but they are still not considered your card and so you couldn't steal their personality, target them with the garden and then just never unbow it and have their personality become a very nice statue right?
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 8 May 2024 10:13 · in reply
"Your" is synonymous with "that you currently control" unless it specifically states "own" or refers to a card in an uncontrolled state, such as in hand or discard, in which case it means "that you own" because it can't mean anything else. So, yes, you absolutely could steal and statue-ify.
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 8 May 2024 10:16 · in reply
Straightening happens "at" the start of the turn; the token is after.
Jeremy Sumerlin (rules official), 8 May 2024 10:19 · in reply
it gives an interesting abilities, but will have to check it how it looks like in real game.

Question about Gusai Natsuko, Do the naval personalities you bow have to be at the same location as her?
A player, 8 May 2024 17:14
Yes, since otherwise it'd specify "at any location"
A player, 8 May 2024 21:55
quick query on this card. when you use the battle ability on the card to bow out a personality with 3 or more attachments it prevents the target from unbowing until that players newxt turn begins.
the question is regarding turn sequence order. from the comprehensive rulebook your turn begins and then you go into 0.0.1 action phase where you unbow all card and are able to take open actions (or limited in older editions).
does this card prevent the target from straightening during this straighten instance or does the personality straighten as normal?
A player, 8 May 2024 21:56
Compare to the wording of Dark Ring of Air
A player, 8 May 2024 21:57
I believe the answer is that Failure of Command will not prevent the personality straightening
A player, 8 May 2024 21:57
Whereas Dark Air does prevent
A player, 8 May 2024 21:58
yeah as dark ring spesifically states will not straighten until after that players next action phase begins and in that instance the action phase straightening has passed. both cards are from the same set to that is a great card to compare against

Not sure how to read this card. If you do not have compassion and you are opposed, do you draw 2 cards and not do the each player draw cards effect?
Or am I reading it wrong and in such a situation where I do not have compassion and is opposed, do I draw 2 cards and in player order draw 1 card?
Jeff Williamson (rules official), 9 May 2024 08:27
You always draw two cards. Then, if either of the stated conditions is fulfilled, each other player may draw one card.
In other words, the only way to prevent giving them the option to draw a card is for you to both have Compassion and for your Personality to be opposed.

Does a raid battle create a new phase? If you say bow 4 gold to attach something that costs 2 does your 2 gold 'float' over to the raid battle?
specifically as per the rules: " This is an additional Attack Phase where only one battlefield is created, not at any Province. "

random question. If i Engage with questionable scout then my opponent destroys the scout, if i bring it back to life useing endo or defiant ground, does it still die at the end of the battlefield?

ok, cool, makes sense, double expendable is nice but I would rather having the ability over and over. small change to plans with that card but still like it
A player, 11 May 2024 02:00
i believe if you put it into your hand from the discard, and replayed it from hand, it would not be destroyed at the end of the battle
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 11 May 2024 02:01 · in reply
That is true. Sorry, I didn't check Endo or Defiant Ground directly. Do either do that?
A player, 11 May 2024 02:01
i don't know, just posing the hypothetical
Jeff Williamson (rules official), 11 May 2024 02:01 · in reply
that's correct, card memory is lost when it goes "face down and out of play"; returning it to your hand is "face down" unless the effect says otherwise
neither do that, both play direct from the discard pile
A player, 11 May 2024 02:01
RIP that idea then
A player, 11 May 2024 02:03
there are a few options to do that but not many good options during battle, other than the new raids to raid, scout, kill target, then there are a couple of card to put followrs back into hand but that isn't the same battle which is what i was looking at as an option for tempo.
A player, 11 May 2024 02:03
reminds me i have to build a control deck using the new raid and ambush to deal with people i don't like

I have a query about these two cards interacting. spesifically can they as one says give them shadowlands and one says will not gain. Can Shaoru be killed and then still be targeted and brought back by Shokansuru?
additionally if they are killed and brought back are they broght back into the home or brought back into the same location as shokansuro?
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 May 2024 11:29 · in reply
1. Yes, Shokansuru can bring back Shaoru. The gaining of Shadowlands will just fail because of his trait. 2. The default area for Recruiting is Home or, if there is a current battle, the current battlefield.
so for question one he would gain the +2f -1C nonhuman and oni but not the shadowlands?
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 May 2024 11:59 · in reply
Yes
A player, 13 May 2024 12:00
ok cool, was worried because of the will not gain would prevent the whole ability and then wanted to make sure he still gains nohuman and oni otherwise the combo here would be dumb as he would always die a human
A player, 13 May 2024 12:06
would a 1C personality just immediately die upon recruitment then?
Brook Cunningham (rules official), 13 May 2024 12:20 · in reply

A Query came up in my last tourney game and did not want to hold up the game by posting the question during it but wanted to get clarification for future games.
With Kanpeki's Political Open: If I target an already dishonored Personality can the personalities player choose to a: not bow and then fail to dishonor and let me draw a card or b as they cannot dishonor the personality they are forced to choose to bow the targeted personality?
A player, 15 May 2024 18:40
They are not forced to bow. Dishonor + card draw is the result of not bowing. If the target personality is already dishonored, you only get the card
ok that was how we played it as i bowed to a more knowledgeable player but is interesting to know for future games
A player, 15 May 2024 20:06
It's similar to how Sanctioned Duel causes dishonor plus honor gain on declining the duel, but not as a cost, meaning if the target opposing personality was already dishonorable, you only get the honor gain
