Hoshi Ishida, Double Chi, and other Dragon Dueling questions...
1. Hoshi Ishida Challenges a Personality to a duel. The Challenge is refused. Does Ishida have to target the challenged personality with the Ranged Attack, or can he target any legal target?
Relevant Card text: "Battle: Once per battle, issue a challenge to an opposing Personality. If he refuses, Ishida produces a Ranged 3 Attack without bowing."
There is no specification as to what must be targeted by the Ranged 3 Attack. You can choose any legal target.
2. Having entered a duel, I want to use Ishida to cast Double Chi on himself - is this Legal? I think it is, mainly due to the Saori ruling that says she can use her ability to challenge on herself, even though it requires her to be bowed during the actual Duel...
Relevant Card text: "Kiho Reaction: When one of your target Personalities enters a duel, bow one of your Shugenja or Monks to give that Personality the Double Chi trait until the duel ends."
Perfectly legal. You've already started the Action that produced the duel, so Ishida was a legal Personality to perform an Action that produces a challenge, and unbowed when you went to cast the Kiho as well. All of this is fine. Becoming bowed as a cost of casting Double Chi won't change anything.
3. Uso Sensei and Explored Territory. I just want to confirm this, because I'm fairly sure of my understanding here: Uso Sensei adds a card Effect to duels that reads "Destroy the loser", yes? which means that with Explored Territory in play, a Test of Might would result in a bowed loser and a destroyed Explored Territory, yes? Provided, of course, that the player chose to use the available Reaction...
The Reaction on Explored Territory des not destroy Explored Territory.
However, yes, you can choose to Negate the destruction of the loser, and all other effects of the duel resolve normally (gain 2 honor, bow the loser).
4. Ring of Fire and Blade of Truth: Does Ring of Fire alter the Focus value of your cards while they are in your hand? or is it an only-when-focused bonus? I ask because of this ruling: "Anything that restricts your focusing choices in a duel based on Focus values (e.g., Blade of Truths) does so based on the cards' values before they're focused. [JA, 3 April 2002]"
"Anything that restricts your focusing choices in a duel based on Focus values (e.g., Blade of Truths) does so based on the cards' values before they're focused. [JA, 3 April 2002]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Duels")
Ch'krit
Hello,
I have a problem with the text of Ch'krit. In the official spoiler sent to Webmasters Ch'krit reads as:
Ratling bushi. Crippled Bone Tribe. Creature. Battle: Once per BATTLE, give +1F to all your Ratling Personalities or all your Ratling Followers. [previews]
But now I have checked my english printed Ch'krit cards from Hidden City boosters and are written:
Ratling bushi. Crippled Bone Tribe. Creature. Battle: Once per TURN, give +1F to all your Ratling Personalities or all your Ratling Followers. [english printed card]
Which is the correct text? a) Text on previews: Once per BATTLE. My english Ch'krit cards have an errata, but no all english printed Ch'krit. b) English printed card: text on preview images showed a mistake. c) Ch'krit was printed with a mistake. A ERRATA for all english copies is needed (I didn't see it in Accumulated Rulings)
In www.L5rsearch.com the text and the image are Once per battle. Spanish printed Ch'krit is Once per battle.
In the absence of errata, the most recent English printing is correct. I will bring this to people's attention here and check why this change was not communicated with our translators.

shosuro loyal
will shosuro join a ninja since she is loyal but also has the ninja trait
"Ninja" is a Faction Trait. Shosuro will join a Dark Path of the Shadow player just as readily as any player using a Scorpion Clan stronghold.
Some questions (need the answers ASAP)
Comments Below:
Rain of Death: -Can I use the second Tactical Battle from Rain of Death to destroy, for example, two followers attacheds in two differents units? And if it is in the same unit?
[MARTY] No part of Rain of Death requires that the targets be in the same unit, or different units. You can do it on two cards in the same unit, or two cards in different units.
-If I'm against one personality with no cards attached, can I use the same hability to destroy him, without target another card?
[MARTY] You can't take any action if you can't pick all the legal targets required of you for the Targeting Step. Rain of Death's second ability requires you to pick two legal targets during the Targeting Step. Rain of Death's first ability only requires one legal target during the Targeting Step because it says it makes "Consecutive Ranged Attacks."
-If I'm against only one unit with just one item attached, can I use second Tactical Battle to destroy the item and the personality?
[MARTY] No. The Personality has an attached card, so he isn't a legal target during the Targeting Step (which is before the effects could resolve).
Shosuro Saemon: -If I make a ranged in Shosuro Saemon and, as a reaction, he give himself a 1F ninja follower, what will happen? Will the ranged become ilegal because he have a follower attached? Will the follower be destroyed or he will be the one who dies?
[MARTY]
"If one or more of an action's targets become illegal between when they are chosen and when the action begins to resolve, that action will not affect those targets. This remains true even if they become illegal, then return to being legal. [JA, 15 June 2004; 22 June 2004]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Actions and abilities")
The Ranged Attack will have no effect on Saemon.
Ikoma Korin: -If I use Korin's battle action and, while I'm targeting one of my opponent's cards, he uses Outer Wall, can I just combine my other ranged 2 attack (from the same battle action) to destroy his card?
[MARTY] No. You have to decide how big the Ranged Attack is and what is combined into it on Announcement, before you even pick a target. Outer Walls is played later, and by then it is too late to combine in more Ranged Attacks. You could use a Reaction like Tsuruchi Technique, though, that increases the strength of the Ranged Attack.

Redirection question
I have a question about redirection and Kolat Assassin.
My opponent has a 3C personality and a 6C personality. I target the 3C personality with a Kolat Assassin, my opponent plays an action (e.g. Turn of Fate) to redirect the action to the 6C personality.
Is this
(a) Legal, because Kolat Assassin should be treated as if it read "Target a personality : If that personality has less than 5C destroy them"
(b) Illegal, because Kolat Assassin should be treated as if it read "Target a personality with less than 5C : Destroy that personality"
It is illegal. Neither wording provided her abides the current templating properly. You do not separate Targeting from the rest of the Action by means of ":" Under modern templating, the clearest wording for Kolat Assassin and similar cards would be: "Limited: Target a personality with less than 5 Chi. Destroy him."
P'an Ku ability ( weird reply ) [RULES]
Ok Marty, can you please give me a light of Enlightenment.
When P'an Ku ability "Open: Once per turn, target a non-Dragon Personality. Copy one of the target's abilities or boldface traits until the next time this ability is used.", the setence "this ability is used" refer to the ability copied or the P'an Ku printed ability.
Because, if refer to the P'an Ku printed ability, you can only have one boldface trait or copied ability at time. So you maken a mistake in your reply below
No. It refers to itself only, not any new abilities created by copying it, which is what happens in this case. Each ability is distinct.
But if refer to the ability copied, you can have a infinite diferents boldface traits and abilities and after you use the ability or trait that ability or trait vanish util you can copy again. this is the correct???
Basically, P'an Ku's text box ends up looking like this:
Unaligned Mad Dragon. Creature. Unique Open: Once per turn, target another Personality. Permanently copy the target's printed Force. Open: Once per turn, target another Personality. Permanently copy the target's printed Chi. Open: Once per turn, target a non-Dragon Personality. Copy one of the target's abilities or boldface traits until the next time this ability is used. Open: Once per turn, target a non-Dragon Personality. Copy one of the target's abilities or boldface traits until the next time this ability is used. Open: Once per turn, target a non-Dragon Personality. Copy one of the target's abilities or boldface traits until the next time this ability is used. Open: Once per turn, target a non-Dragon Personality. Copy one of the target's abilities or boldface traits until the next time this ability is used.
. . . (repeated Ad Nauseam)
Open: Once per turn, target a non-Dragon Personality. Copy one of the target's abilities or boldface traits until the next time this ability is used.
Each Open Action on P'an Ku is distinct from all the others, so you can chain them off of another non-Dragon that copies the ability from P'an Ku.
Then you can use them in reverse-order on the next turn to effectively copy any finite number of abilities and boldface traits.
That should cover everything for Friday. If I missed your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of a Clear and Distinct subject line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
