Performing vs play_take an action, and opposing
I have six different questions.
A. Opposing for actions:
My opponent attack my last Province with Kuon. I defend with Koto. I have a bowed Isawa Jun with an attached unbowed Follower at home.
Question A: Can I play Peasant Vengeance to Kuon, bowing Jun’s Follower?
1. Yes. You have presence, meet relevance, cost could be paid, and Koto opposes Kuon, making Kuon “an opposing Infantry Personality with no Followers or Items”
2. No. The Follower performing the Peasant Vengeance must be at the current battle and opposing Kuon
The answer is "2." Peasant Vengeance is an Action card (can't be in any army) and its last given reference for "opposing" was "one of your Followers." Ergo, the target must be opposing the Follower you bowed to pay the cost.
B. Opposing for Formations
My opponent attack my last Province with Atarasi. I defend with two Samurai both with Follower tokens attached. I have a bowed Shiba Danjuro with an attached unbowed non-token Follower at home. I play Endless Horde Question B: Can I use his Battle action bowing Danjuro’s Follower?
3. Yes. You have presence, meet relevance, cost could be paid with a non-token Follower, and Atarasi is opposed.
4. No. The Follower performing the Endless Horde must be at the current battle and opposing Atarasi
The answer is "4," for the same reason that the answer was "2" above. The card with the Action can't be at a battle, and the ability references a card which can be at the battle, so "opposing" refers to that card (the follower paying the cost).
C. Opposing for action made by players
My opponent attack my last Province with Hida Tonoji with an attached Spearmen. I defend with two Personalities. I have a unbowed Toshiji at home. I play Brutal Confrontation.
Question C: Can I bow Toshiji to perform a Ranged 3 Attack against the Spearmen? 5. Yes. You have presence, meet relevance, cost could be paid, and the ranged attack targets a card opposed by your army at the current battle. 6. No. The performing Personality must be at the current battle and opposing the card you have targeted
The answer is again, "6," for the same reasons as outlined above. The ability is not on a card in an army and references the Personality who pays the cost as the point for determining "opposing."
D. Tactical use of trait Tactician
My opponent attack my Province A with The Maw. I defend with Akodo Tadenori at Province A and with Matsu Aoiko at Province B. My Stronghold is Kenson Gakka. Battle starts at Province A (The Maw vs Tadenori) I want to play Superior Strategist and search a Refugees
Question D: Can I perform the Tactical Battle with Aoiko?
7. Yes. You have presence, cost could be paid with a performing Tactician that hadn’t used his Tactician trait in the current battle, and relevance applies searching a Battle action like Refugees 8. No. You must meet relevance before play the searched card, like targeting the performing tactician in the current battle (Tadenori).
The answer here is "8," because the card you search for can't grant you Relevance.
E. Another Tactical use of trait Tactician
My opponent attack my Province A with Ogre Bushi. I defend with Shinjo Reizo at Province A and with Shinjo Nakaga at Province B. Battle starts at Province A (Ogre Bushi vs Reizo)
Question E: Could I play Exhaustion targeting Ogre Bushi and performed by Nakaga (not in the current battle)?
9. Yes. You have presence, meet relevance, cost could be paid, and Ogre Bushi is opposed by Reizo at the current battle. 10. No. The perfforming Tactician must be at the current battle to allow it.
The answer here is "10." Exhaustion says, "Tactical Battle: Target your performing Tactician and an opposing Personality with lower printed Gold cost."
Exhaustion is not a card in any army, but it forces you to target one of your cards that can be in any army and "opposing" references that Personality.
Easy Ring of Water?
Will a Kuro's Fire attached to a 4-C Shugenja suffice as condition for playing the Ring of Water if you make the 4 Ranged attacks with it?
Similarly, do Wanton Destruction's duels count as two actions to the Ring of Water's condition?
No. A "Duel" or "Ranged Attack" does not an Action make. These are examples of individual Actions that produce multiple effects, not multiple Actions.
Clan Champions
Can you take control of Clan Champions via cards like Yajinden or Seppun Jin? Why or why not?
The "Clan Champion" trait has no impact on who can or can not control a Personality.
Most of the the Diamond Edition Clan Champions, however, have a trait that says, "Will only join an X player." If your question is whether you can ignore those traits when playing a "steal control" effect, the answer is "not unless the ability says it overrides such effects."
Yajinden does not override. Seppun Jin does. Seppun Jin says, "without cost and ignoring all restrictions," while Yajinden does not.
That should cover everything for Thursday. If I missed your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of a Clear and Distinct subject line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
