(RULES) Khol Wall, Movement and Ambush
Ambush says "No other units may assign or move to this battle." The Khol Wall (and Northern Provinces) allow me to switch the locations of two Unicorn personalities. So were I to attempt to switch locations of an Ambushed person and a person in my home, what happens?
"Switching units counts as moving the units, and is one effect. Preventing one unit from moving prevents switching. [VRD, 10 December 2000]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Battle")
Show of Good Faith - Suitengu's Surge
I have a shugenja with Suitengu's Surge attached, and I play Show of Good Faith to take control of, say, an opponent's Kaiu Hisayuki until the end of the turn.
Once Hisayuki is under my control, I target him with an action, and react by using Suitengu's Surge to send him out of play.
Seeing that Suitengu's Surge brings Hisayuki back into play before the beginning of the next turn (and therefore after Show of Good Faith's effect expires), under whose control does Hisayuki return, mine or my opponent's?
Show of Good Faith's duration granting you control has expired.
The prohibition against Attacking ended when Hisayuki left play.
Now for the fun part:
Returning the unit to play constitutes bringing the cards into play again. Since you just brought the Personality into play, you're the Personality's controller by default now, just as if you'd bought him from your Province.
Show of Good Faith + Suitengu's Surge = Permanent Theft
Jama Suru (Exp.) & Iuchiban Sensei
I have a Jama Suru (Exp.) with a Force of Will attached. I am Iuchiban’s Citadel player with Iuchiban Sensei. I use Force of Will.
Q: Can I unbow Suru due to Iuchiban Sensei?
I am not sure if the “Spell effects created by Suru are Maho” make Maho the Open Action from Force of Will, because Suru’s trait only talk about effects, not complete action.
The Action is not a Maho Action. The Effects, however, are considered to be Maho due to Suru's trait.
Reactions on a bowed holding
Can you use a reaction on a holding if the holding is bowed???
Holdings are no different than any other card in this respect.
"While a card or Strognhold is bowed, none of its actions can be used, not even ones that don't require bowing to perform. (Expection: An action that straightens the card is still usable)." (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 54)
If the Action says, "Even if bowed," or some such, however, the card's text can break this rule, as per the Cardinal Rules on page 34.
Some WoL Qs
1 - Can I satisfy Well-laid Plains 3rd hability just with naname who is courtier and samurai or need I 2 personalities one with each trait?
No. It asks you to "target a Courtier Personality you control and a Samurai Personality you control." Those are two distinct targets.
2 - Can I create Yajinden Fortress personality in a battle without presence?
Creating a unit in a Battlefield or moving a unit into a Battlefield both meet the requirements of the Rule of Presence.
Yobanjin are the Gaijin. Yajinden is the Maho-tsukai.
3 - Can I play Soul of the Clan if the other player has not personalities at his home?
You can put the Formation into play, sure.
You can't use the ability on the Formation, however, unless you have all the necessary targets. That means you need, "a bowed Personality at the enemy leader's home," or you can't use the ability.
A couple of questions
1. Moshi Hoinome's ability (and others like it) say that you "Bring the target into play in your home, ignoring costs". Can I bring a personality into play ignoring the honor requirements and other limitations ?
"Personalities' Honor Requirements need only be met during the Dynasty Phase. [JA, 27 September 2001]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Honor Requirements")
However, "other limitations" still apply. Loyal, Singular, and Unique rules could all get in your way, for instance.
2. Timing problem: Otaku's ability of "Destroying" and "Bowing" works if the "Bowed" or "Destroyed" Card is Otaku ?
No. Her ability does not get around the general rules prohibiting you from playing Actions on bowed cards or cards you don't control (in your Discard Pile, in this case). You can use her ability without these things happening to her, so the Cardinal Rule won't help either (Otaku doesn't need to break any rules to be useful).
Paying costs or not [RULES]
So my question is. When didn´t have any word about need pay cost or not need to pay, in a card text, it will be a always need pay all the costs?
I'm sorry that I made that mistake earlier. If you aren't given instructions as to whether or not you must pay the cost of a card you are bringing into play via an effect, the default rule is that you need not pay the cost of that card.
Just like you don't have to re-pay the gold cost of a Personality you bring back into play with Feign Death.
Sword of Spirit
I dont belive this, but I need an officall ruling on whether or not Sword of Spirit is still a weapon when it is follower. My TO claims that it has to lose the the weapon trait, but I see nothing on the card indicating that.
There is no rule preventing a non-Item card from gaining the "Weapon" trait, nor is there any rule stripping the "Weapon" trait from a card that becomes a non-Item card.
Weapon != Item
dishonored peeps and shrine to benten
If a dishonored personality bows to shrine to benten to pay full for a personality, does the dishonored personality get restored to honor for being involved in an honor gain?
No. Bowing to pay the cost of a card that pays the cost of bring another card into play that somehow gains you honor isn't a direct enough connection.
If I'm in a battle with a dishonored personality, I play field of glorious slaughter, then use tsuruchi technique's ranged 3 to kill a follower in the opposing army, thus giving me 2 honor. Can I forgoe the honor gain to restore my personality to honor? (I think this is a bit too far removed)
No, but if the Dishonored Personality had Performed the Action that destroyed the enemy, he'd be rehonored.
Same situation, but I use a ranged attack from a different unit in my army (led by an honorable personality). Does the dishonored personality get restored to honor for being in the same army as the origin of the unit that created the honor gain? (I think "no," it's too far removed)
Again, too far removed.
Same situation, but I use a ranged attack on a follower attached to my dishonored personality. Do I gain 2 honor, or does the personality get restored to honor? (I'm not sure about this one, I think "no" but it could be yes).
No. The Follower performs the Action itself, as per page 71 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook. If the Personality had performed the Action of one of his Spells or Items, however, that would qualify.
Suitengu's Surge Timing
So, please, answer and debate away. I don't have the exact e-mail from Jeff on me, but I can post that up too when I get home if need be.
The Rules Team hashed this out.
"No new effects will apply to the targeted unit while it is out of play. Existing effects will continue for their normal durations. If this causes a card or token in the unit to be removed from the game before the unit returns to play, that card or token does not return with the unit. [JA, email, 14 December 2004]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Suitengu's Surge")
So Fury of Hida can't remove its tokens at the end of the turn, because they aren't there. It is a one-shot effect, not a duration expiration, so once it fails, it won't make another attempt.
Utemaro's Tokens, however, have a duration. If their duration expires while the unit with them is out-of-play due to the Surge, the Utemaro Tokens will not return to play because they are past their shelf-life.
More on Suiteingu's Surge
If a card is not in the game (not in any deck, not in a hand or province, not in play and not in a discard pile) at the end of a turn, then effects that happen at the end of the turn will not happen (follower tokens from Hida's thingie or Utemaro going away, etc). What about effects that end at the end of the turn?
"No new effects will apply to the targeted unit while it is out of play. Existing effects will continue for their normal durations. If this causes a card or token in the unit to be removed from the game before the unit returns to play, that card or token does not return with the unit. [JA, email, 14 December 2004]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Suitengu's Surge")
If they expire, they are gone. There is not sort of stasis effect on the unit removed by Suitengu's Surge.
If any of the cards attached to the personality have entering play effects, then they should presumeably have their entering play effects happen again as well.
Indeed.
For example, Summon the Dead says "When this Spell enters play, it gains Porcelain tokens equal to this Shugenja's Chi." Am I correct in assuming that the spell will gain a few more tokens when it reenters play as well?
Yes.
How about cards like the Bone of the Tattered Ear Tribe and Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng (nonexp)? Will they generate more tokens when they reenter play?
Yes they will.
Shattered Focus vs. Kharmic Strike
Let's say I have Shattered Focus at home when a strike is called. Kharmic Strike is revealed after being focused against my duelist. If I use Shattered Focus to discard Kharmic Strike, would it:
A. Do nothing. Kharmic Strike has been revealed and the duel will unerringly end in a tie. B. The duel resolves normally as Kharmic Strike is now in the discard pile; its trait no longer has an effect on the duel's outcome.
A. By card text, Kharmic Strike triggers as soon as it is revealed. Discarding it after it is revealed won't change anything that has already triggered.
That should cover everything from Monday. If I missed your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of your Clear and Distinct subject line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
