Ring of Earth tricks

Two questions involving the Ring of Earth:

Scenario A:

I use the Ring of Earth ability on one of my Samurai. I proceed to attack with that Samurai and a Monk in the same army. My opponent plays Block Supply Lines on the Monk. I use Turn of Fortune to redirect the BSL to the Samurai, which then doesn't get sent home because of the Ring of Earth. Is this valid?

Sure thing. The Samurai was a legal target for Block Supply Lines, even if the effect of Block Supply Lines would be negated by "other players cannot move that Personality into or out of battles."

Scenario B:

I use the Ring of Earth ability on a Samurai as before, use Someisa Sensei (and a Monk) to unbow the Ring, use it again on another Samurai. I attack with both. My opponent blocks with one unit, and sacks it to play Overwhelmed. Can I choose to send two units home? If I choose that, must they go home or does the Ring prevent that?

You can not choose that option in the decision. You know the attempts to send them home will fail, so you can not choose to make such an attempt if another option of the choice could be completed without failing.

"If a card effect forces you to make a decision, you may not choose an option that is known in advance will fail. You may, however, immediately respond with a voluntary effect that negates or cancels the action or effect you chose. [Summary of other rulings]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Decisions")

Comments Below:

Doji Hayaku+Ambush Duel

Hayaku: Reaction: Before Hayaku is destroyed: Produce a ranged attack with a strength equal to Hayaku's Personal Honor.

Ambush Duel Limited: Bow one of your Personalities with a ranged attack ability on himself or on one of his Items to have him challenge another Personality. If the challenge is refused, gain 3 Honor, and the other Personality may not assign to battles this turn. During the duel, each Personality adds the highest non-variable ranged attack strength from his own or his Items' actions to his Chi.

Can I make use of ambush duel with Hayaku's reactionary range attack, Yes or no?

[MARTY] Hayaku has a Ranged Attack ability on his card. There isn't any question about that. It is a Reaction, thus an Ability. It produces a Ranged Attack. Who could ask for anything more?

Jeff Marty - Shinjo's courage

Comments Below:

Had a question about shinjo's courage from dawn and the new templating.

The last lines read:"... if this cards force is now 0, destroy it. Gain honor equal to your personalities personal honor."

If I play this card do I gain the honor only if the targetted opposing card is destroyed from the action? Or do I still gain the honor if the unit is not destroyed?

[MARTY] The "Gain Honor equal to your Personality's Personal Honor." sentence happens regardless of the outcome of the previous sentence's "If the card's Force is now 0, destroy it."

It the wording was meant to make the honor gain conditional on the construction, they wouldn't have made an entirely new sentence, they would have just said, "destroy it AND gain Honor ..."

They are separate sentences and separate effects. You gain the honor even if you don't destroy the target.

Rain of Death

Marty/Jeff,

Can you clarify the rules on ranged attacks, please? If a personality performs an action on an action card that creates a ranged attack, does the ranged attack count as coming from the personality or the action card?

Effects come from the card with the action. What "performs" the action is irrelevant.

If it comes from the action card, the question becomes, do Formations count as attacking cards, if you're attacking?

No. Only cards in the attacking army are "attacking cards".

If they don't, how does Rain of Death get around the fact that Ranged attacks can only target opposing cards?

The same way Tsuruchi Technique does, and Arrows From the Woods before that.

A reference to "an opposing card" means "a card opposing this card" when it is used on a card that can be in [armies]. It instead means "a card opposing a card you control" when used on something else.

If they do, can a Tactician who's not in the battle perform the action on Rain of Death?

Yes.

Can I combine the Ranged Attacks on Rain of Death with....

No. You cannot combine them, period, because they come from the Formation, and the Formation is not in a unit. Only ranged attacks from multiple cards in one unit may be combined.

[MARTY'S NOTE]: Edited "battles" to "armies" for clarity and accuracy.

That should cover everything from Thursday that doesn't require me to answer questions based on Web of Lies. If I missed your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of your Clear and Distinct subject line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
