RULES Gold Costs

What is the Gold Cost (if any) of a Personalities created by an action or card effect, when no value is given (ie. Ratling Raider, Chuda Mishime, The Legions Charge, Arrival of the Emerald Champion...etc.)?

Unspecified values are set to 0. (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 63)

Is this considered the printed Gold Cost of the Personality, or does the Personality lack a printed Gold Cost?

It lacks a Printed Gold Cost. If something keys off of a value that does not exist, consider it to be 0. Attempts to alter that value always fail.

Printed Values - Drop below 0?

Comments Below:

Marty, what is a Non-Value Numeral? Could you give an example?

[MARTY] Numerals kept in a card's Traits or Abilities are typically not Values.

For instance, Tamago has an ability that reads: "Battle: Permanently reduce Tamago's Personal Honor by 1 to issue an unrefusable challenge to an opposing Personality."

That "1" is not any of the Tamago card's Values.

2 - Values that are initially printed / created as +X or -X values.

Does this mean that any +/-X value can cross the zero threshold in either direction?

[MARTY] If I read Jeff's response correctly, yes.

Events Entering Play

Comments Below:

So, to clarify:

If an event 'remains in play', then it overrides the 'does not enter play' ruling and does enter play, before remaining there. It is an effect of the card to enter play and remain there, because the ruling says that events normally do not enter play, but specific cards override the ruling. Thus while the event is not continuously entering play, it is continuously remaining there due to an effect of the event.

[MARTY] Not quite.

The Rulebook normally has a revealed Event resolve and be discarded without ever entering play.

This kind of Event ovrrides that process. The revealed Event is put into play. Cards put into play remain in play until acted upon by another effect or the game ends. This is NOT an "on-going effect." Holdings, Personalities, and Followers you play do not remain in play due to any "on-going effects."

Were all effects of that Event to end, there would still be no effect in either the Rulebook or the playing field that would remove such a card from play. There is no rule on the books that discards an Event except when you reveal one from your Provinces during the Events Phase or discard a face-up one from your Provinces during the End Phase. There is no rule for discarding Events from play.

Also, some events are your events due to control and all other events are your events by English? Isn't that a bad precedent (eg for Jigoku Sensei, as already mentioned) as the english versions of 'your' now overlap with the rule versions?

[MARTY] Nope.

This isn't about the events so much as the cards that reference them.

As I've already pointed out, Escape From Shadow can NEVER refer to a card in play, since it specifies a card in a Province, which by definition has no controller. Hence, Escape From Shadow does not reference control of the card when it uses the word, "your."

Unexpected Strike: End all ongoing effects of one Event that has already resolved.

Goemon's Ascension: This card remains in play in your home. [...]

[MARTY] Unexpected Strike has no effect whatsoever on Goemon's Ascension. Goemon's Ascension produces no on-going effects from its resolution.

Dawn of the Empire Clarification

Dawn of the Empire for pre-orders will ship in late October.

Some people may have been told it was shipping in late September, and this was an error.

The ship date will be announced later this month.

I apologize for any confusion.

Thanks!

Fun with copying...

Suppose I copy an action from personality Bob with my Water Dragon and then lose it at the end of the turn. The next turn, I again copy the Bob's ability with the Water Dragon. Am I considered to have a new action or have I regained an old action? <insert foreboding of doom combo>

It is a brand new ability. Go nuts, Leon.

That should be everything from Tuesday the 14th. If I missed your question unrelated to Dawn of the Empire, please repost it with the flag [RULES] in your clear and distinct Subject Line. I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
