Your Rules for Saturday, July 31, 2004

more for Jeff - yes, I know I'm a pain in the ass.

1 Announce Action 1a reactions to Announce Action 2 Choose Targets 2a reactions to Choose Targets 3 Pay Costs 3a reactions to Pay Costs 4 Resolve Effects 4a reactions to Resolve Effects

Strike With No Shadow 0G Ninja Limited: Bow one of your Ninja Personalities to target a player. If any of his Provinces hold cards, target and discard one of these cards; otherwise destroy one of that player's Personalities of his choice. You may increase this card's Gold cost by 2 to shuffle it into your deck instead of discarding it after playing it.

1 Announce I'm going to play Strike With no Shadow 2 Target I target you and I choose your leftmost province 3 Pay Costs I pay 0 gold 4 Resolve Effects a. I discard the card and you refill the province b. I increase the card's Gold cost by 2 and shuffle it into my fate deck instead of discardin it after playing it.

The gold cost of the card is now 2. If I draw the card and use it again before the end of the turn, I'll have to pay 2 gold. If I draw it at the end of my turn and play it next turn, it costs 0 gold again because card changes wear off at the end of the turn.

Why was the "increase the card's Gold cost" clause added to this card since it won't really matter 99% of the time or more? Was it supposed to be "permanently increase..."?

No. It was supposed to be an alternate way of playing the card, not one of its effects.

I'll see just exactly how the Design Team wants to errata it. -- Jeff Alexander Lead Designer, L5R CCG Alderac Entertainment Group

RULES: Introspection

--- In, Jeff Alexander Can you play (as an example) three spell effects. When the timing window for playing the Ring of Air appears, you announce that you are playing the Ring of Air, Introspection off that "played" to grab the Ring of Air from your deck, then resume where you left off and play the Ring of Air that you just fetched?

You cannot merely say you are playing a card and respond to that with Reactions to actually playing one. This has nothing to do with timing.

In that case, at what points does an action have to be legal and what happens if the action becomes not legal? If I announce an action that is not legal and it becomes legal as I play the action, then I thought that I got to play the action. Is this not the case?

That is not the case. You cannot announce an illegal action.

For example, I have a Shugenja with 2 force and 3 chi. I announce a Kuro's Fire of 7, knowing that it will be reduced by an effect already in play that reduces all ranged attack strengths by 2. I announce the (currently illegal) ranged attack, choose targets, pay the costs and then resolve the effects of the (now legal) ranged 5 attack.

It is not illegal. You announced an action that will, given the entire known state of the game at that time, have a final ranged attack strength of 5, which is within Kuro's Fire's bounds in that instance.

Also, what happens if the Shugenja listed above produces a ranged 5 attack (with no other effects in play) and the opponent responds with Hakai's reaction. I then reduce the Shugenja's Chi by 2 making him a 2F, 1C Shugenja and that ranged 5 attack is now no longer legal because it is over 3 although the target is still a legal target for whatever ranged attack gets produced. What happens to the ranged attack

Based on the ruling that Tsuruchi Technique can freely modify a declared Kuro's Fire ranged attack by any amount, I would say nothing happens to it. It will only impact how many more points of ranged attack you may make subsequent to it.

Palace of the Emerald Champion

Palace of the Emerald Champion: Unique You cannot achieve an Honor Victory while the Palace of the Emerald Champion is in play. Reaction: When this province is about to be destroyed, discard the top ten card s of your Fate deck. The Province is not destroyed.

Since this does not say "Do X TO Do Y", but rather "do X. Do Y.", does that mean that my province is indistructable while Palace of the Emerald Champion is attached even if I have 0 cards in my fate deck?

Fire & Shadow is the first set to use the "costs come before 'to'" template. [GE rulebook] The Palace of the Emerald Champion comes from Honor Bound, which is two sets before F&S. The templating for Honor Bound often used the first sentence for the cost. Sorry. If you can't pitch ten cards, you can't use it.

Restriction

Is the fact that you can't put into play a personnality with the unique trait if another one with the same name is in play a restriction?

No being able to bring a second copy of a unique into play is a restriction. The card says that it ignores restrictions. There is no spoon.

That looks like everything that is not related to Wrath or fielded by Jeff later on. If I missed your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] as part of a distinct and clear subject line. I'll get back to your at the first opportunity.
