Rules for 24 June 2004 - Addendum

Martin Lund, sent 29 June 2004 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

And addendum to the Rules for 24 June 2004 because I'm a big fan of Jell-o. ;-)

Just so that I understand this new revelation, I have three hypothetical situations.

1) My opponent plays "I hate Shugenja", a card that will dishonor two target shugenja. In response, I play the card "I'm Not a Shugenja".

I Hate Shugenja: 6g, 1 focus Limited: Dishonor two Shugenja

I'm Not a Shugenja: 0g, 4 focus When someone targets one of your Shugenja with an action, remove the shugenja trait from that personality. ---

If I understand the new rule, this will negate the dishonor of one of the shugenja because that personality will no longer be a legal target and the target illegalization happened before the effects began to resolve.

Yup, you've got it right.

2) My opponent plays "Samurai are Awesum!", a card that gives a bonus to a Samurai and then starts a duel between that Samurai and a Shugenja. In response, I play "You're Just a Courtier"

Samurai are Awesum! 4g, 2 focus Limited: Target one of your Samurai and an opponent's Shugenja. Give the Samurai +2 force and +2 chi. Your Samurai then challenges the Shugenja to a duel of force or chi (your choice).

You're Just a Courtier 6g, 1 focus Reaction: When a samurai gains a force bonus, remove the Samurai trait from that card and replace it with the Courtier trait.

--- In this case, "You're Just a Courtier" will have its effect before the duel happens, but it will not stop the duel even though the former Samurai is no longer a legal target for the second effect of "Samurai are Awesum!" because the effects have already started to resolve.

Correct. Two-for-two.

3) My opponent plays "Samurai are Awesum!" and I react to that with "I'm not a Shugenja". In this case, I can see one of two things happening: A) The entire action stops before any effects resolve because the action is no longer legal (you had to target a Samurai and an opponent's Shugenja) OR B) The first part of the action happens (the Samurai gets +2 force and +2 Chi), but the challenge does not happen because the Shugenja is not a legal target since he's not a Shugenja anymore.

The answer for that one would be "B."
