Hakai Clarification and Clarification of "key" wording.

Comments Below:

Right then, so when someone has their personality targeted by Kolat Assasin, then, somehow raises the targeted peep's Chi, even if it get's reduced back to what would be considered targetable, the targeting fails and the action is cancled...

[MARTY] No.

The Action is not Canceled.

Any further Effects on the Target are Negated.

Just take a look at Monkey Magistrates. It even has reminder text to that point.

For Hakai, it is "after a card is placed in the discard pile"... if I'm correct, than the ruling above has no bearing as long as the card went to the

discard pile, even if they come back out, because the condition for targeting is not relying on the card STAYING in the discard pile.

[MARTY] Correct. It does not say, "Target a card in a discard pile."

On: Hakai

Also, "after" is a key word meaing "immediately after" yes?

[MARTY] Yes.

Thus the reason you can't play Ring of Air after your fifth casting of a spell or kiho (or something like that).

[MARTY] Actually, Ring of Air says, "After casting three or more," so it has to get dropped immediately after casting spells 3,4,5,6, etc.

Thus you can't have Hakai use his reaction to remove a card from the discard pile at a later time.

[MARTY] Correct.

-- Re: [L5R-CCG] Rules for 18 June 2004

1) I play Show of Good Faith on opponent's peep.

2) I then use Suiteiru no Oni's ability to destroy the peep.

3) I play Feign Death on the peep.

Sheesh! What did that piece of left-over Easter Candy ever do to you? ;-)

Could you please clarify: Does the peep return to my opponent at the end of my turn? Or do I get to keep control of the peep?

At the end of the turn, Show of Good Faith's effect giving you control of the Personality ends. If you're still supposed to control that Personality, even without that effect, then it will stay with you. Ways this could happen would include:

1.) Playing an effect that gives you control of the Personality and has not expired yet

Example: play Loyalty Renewed during your Action Phase

Example: giving control of the Personality to another player, only to take it back with a Kolat Master

2.) Bring the Personality into play under your control

Example: using Feign Death on that Personality as in your above example

Example: killing the Personality, putting it into your Province with Morning Glory Castle, and then buying it during your Dynasty Phase)

Purity And Iuchiban

Quick Clarification: Purity of the Seven Thunders will destroy Iuchiban because it is a blanket effect and does not target him. Correct?

Purity of the Seven Thunders does not target the Shadowlands Cards it destroys. There is no choice involved in what gets nuked. You've either got the trait or you don't.

Balance In Nothingness and Shiba Danjuro

i'm almost positive that Balance in Nothingness could be used to cancel anything redirected to Shiba Danjuro through his own action. but i haven't seen or heard of anyone using it, which makes me suspicious.

redirecting actions is a big deal, but canceling them is even better. it seems like a good combo.

Oh great. Now you've got me paranoid.

Unless I missed something obvious, that looks like a clean play.

Hiruma Ashihei

I remember a discussion a while back about Ashihei's Trait being able to cancel an Iajutsu Challenge, but I was just looking through the accumulated rulings

<SNIP>

It seems to me choosing the dishonor route on IC is know to fail from an effect that is NOT voluntary.

You do not "choose the dishonor route."

You are only choosing to accept or refuse a challenge. Ashihei can accept challenges. Ashihei can refuse challenges.

The fact that other effects may trigger or not based on that decision is irrelevant. Iaijutsu Challenge dishonoring your Personality is not the effect you are choosing, but a later effect that looks to see the decision you've made. The only decision you make is accept / refuse.

To illustrate the difference, look at another Crab - Hida Sozen.

You could not decide to destroy Hida Sozen when forced to choose between destroying him and doing something else that would not fail. Say an opponent's Overwhelmed resolves while not Sozen's unit is not out-forced. You can't choose to destroy Sozen over sending two units home, since destroying Sozen will fail.

You CAN make a choice that allows another effect to try and destroy him and watch that effect fail. Say Sozen is the victim of Fires of Dishonor. You can still make decisions from other effects to bow Sozen, regardless of Fires of Dishonor failing to kill him.

That looks like everything from Monday, June 21, 2004. If I missed your question, please repost it with the Flag [RULES] in a clear, distinct subject line and I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.
