Your Rules for Sunday, May 16, 2004

A convoluted question

While Shinden Horiuchi, if I Gempukku Xushen(A Bushi) into a Shugenja, then buy him using gold including a Seculed Outpost, can I attach a Spell to him as he enters play?

No. It is only "your spell" once it is in play and thusly controlled by you. It can't be in play until you paid for it. Consequently, it isn't an item when Secluded Outpost would let you play an item at reduced cost.

Suiteru no Oni

Hi Marty,

Howdy.

I attack with Suiteru no oni and another Oni Province A and with another Oni Province B,I resolve the Battle in Province A first, can I use Suiteru no Oni's ability and destroy the other Oni in Province A to give Suiteru no Oni AND the Oni in Province B the Followers.

[MARTY] Nothing against that. You've got Presence and Relevance covered. The fact that cards outside the battle might also be affected is irrelevant to the legality of the play. Go for it.

White shore plain

If I play white shore plain, my tac will gain a bonus of force equal to their Chi, or they will have the force set equal to their Chi? I'm confused because the text says:"gains force".

That means you get a force Bonus - an increase to your Force of the value. So you get +X Force where X = your Chi.

I guess I can see the confusion, since gaining a trait is kind of like having it written into your card with a magic marker. In the case of stats (which are numbers), no, "gain" does not mean you overwrite the stat. It means that stat's value increases.

casting kihos wih a non-monk

Can a personality that can cast a kiho as a monk cast a palm Strike? For exaple, can a samurai with Temple of Hoshi do it?

Yes. That's the idea.

While castingKiho == "true" myPersonality = "Monk" End While

Question with Shosuro Technique

I question because it directly changes the personalities force. Does it change the force, and then apply other bonuses?

It changes the Personality's current force, after all penalties and bonuses already in effect are applied. It adds itself in at the end of the line of existing bonuses and effects as a Force Bonus equal to the different between the Current Force of your Personality and the Current Force of the opposing beasty.

At that point, the Force Bonus is "locked in" and subsequent bonuses and penalties will factor in normally.

So, if you have 3F currently and the the Maw has 7F, you get +4F from Shosuro Technique to make you 7F. If the Maw later Tacticians, the bonus doesn't change. If you later Tactician, the bonus still doesn't change. Only another effect (like In Search of the Future) will change that bonus.

OK, that looks like it for Sunday. As always, if I miss your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] in the subject line and I'll get back to you at the first opportunity.

Thanks,
