Rules for 10 April 2004

Martin Lund, sent 12 April 2004 to the l5r-ccg mailing list, the l5r-useful list

A rules digest from the L5R CCG rules team, copied from the mailing list archive for Oracle of the Void. The askers' names are left out. Rulings are as they stood on this date; later rulings, the rulebooks and the Rules Archive may differ.

Well, now I know how the Red Sox bullpen feels when they need to have Dave McCarty pitch.

I think I've officially been "roughed up" this weekend. Good questions, folks.

And on to the Rules for Saturday, April 10, 2004.

Gifts and Favors. [ruling]

I need a ruling because of an incident.

Can you bow your stronghold to search for and bring in a “Gifts and Favors” while you have none in play? If you bought nothing that turn?

Thanks again guys,

Short answer: Yes, you can get Gifts and Favors without having one in play.

Long answer: Yes, you use the ability of the Gifts and Favors in the deck to do this. Sometimes cards break the basic rules of the game in order to function. In this case, Gifts and Favors refers to itself, not any old other card with the name "Gifts and Favors." You can only find a given copy of Gifts and Favors in your deck or provinces if it is not in play, so the only time this ability is legal is when the card it is printed on is not in play.

Ergo, it must break the rules and allow you to play its ability from the Dynasty Deck.

Rule questions

Hi !

Howdy!

I have a couple of questions : 1/Honor and Glory has resolves earlier this game, and one of my dishonored personalities challenges another one during battle (either with Steel on Steel or using one of her own abilities). Is she considered involved in the challenge, and thus rehonored, or do I only gain 2 ?

Well, your personality was involved in the honor gain. He issued the Challenge, triggering a 2 point honor gain from Honor and Glory. That will rehonor your dishonored challenger instead.

2/When I use the Right Hand's second ability to cancel a move, does it target the Personality moving out of the battle ?

Fields of Glorious Slaugthter Question.

If this is in play, and I duel someone and win, do I gain honor for the personality card I destroyed as well as all the card’s attached?

Essentially: if you duel someone and they die, are you considered to have destroyed his attached cards?

Um, I do not believe - you - are considered to have done the destroying, no. The Rulebook takes care of that.

However, Fields of Glorious Slaughter doesn't care about that at all.

Fields of Glorious Slaugher says, "Politcal Battle: Gain 2 Honor each time a card you do not control is destroyed in this battle."

Whether the rulebook, your opponent, or you destroy the cards is irrelevant. As long as you played Field of Glorious Slaughter and the cards destroyed weren't under your control, you gain honor from Field.

Left Hand Rules Question

Does this mean I actually have to die in the resolution of the battle or at any time due to any action in the battle?

It has to be death caused by the effect during Battle Resolution destroying all the cards in a losing or tied army. That's one of the "results" of a battle. The effects of Actions played during battle are not considered to be the results of battles.

And as for the confusion around Kwanchai xp. and Pit of Blood from my previous posts, I'll just recap what Zen helped me hash out over here:

Kwanchai xp. targets, because sometimes (like during Battle Resolution) you'll have to choose which Personality to save, and if an Action targets some of the time, it targets all of the time. (Diamond Edition Rulebook, Page 72, "Targeting and Redirection")

Pit of Blood targets along similar logic. When multiple bloodspeakers are destroyed at once (like during Battle Resolution) you'll have to choose which one you take for each use of Pit of Blood. Ergo, Pit of Blood targets as well.

That looks like it covers everything not related to Hidden City that was not addressed in-thread by Zen or myself. If I missed your question, please repost it with the flag [RULES] in the subject line.

Thanks,
